Looking for this specific map style...

I play Heroes 3 (Complete) using random maps with a friend of mine online. Because neither of us are well-schooled in how to adjust map setting before we generate the map, we find more often then not that we start too near to each other and end up in combat before we can get anything established.

I was hoping some of you veteran Heroes folk could point me in the right direction for custom made maps that fit this criteria...

Large or X-Large
Two player starting on opposit ends of the map

That's all really. It would be nice to be able to have the starting castle both choosable and random. Also, we don't want to know any specifics about the map itself because that could cause unfair advantages and ruin surprises. Also, it would be best if the players started with random heroes like normal.

Sorry if this sounds a little mundane. My friend and I aren't really experts or have the game down to a mathematical level- we just play for fun.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could go here and u will find custom made "templates". So called basic scripts for random maps. Just download one of them and save them as "rmg.txt" in your DATA folder.
Now the game will take this specific script as "matrix" to create a random map. Be sure your settings fit the given choices (especially about number of players and map size, which is always written besides the map picture on that link).

If u want to have a rich map, where both palyers have a big starting area with 1 starting town and 2 neutrals, and where u have to break through lots of level 7 units to reach the "treasure zone" (full of relics, utopias and boxes) where u will meet your opponent, then i would suggest u download "Jebus Cross" (playable as M, L or XL, all with under)
If u want to have it less rich but with tougher guards, then u should download either "Extreme" or "Extreme 2" (playable as L or XL, NO under)
If u want a real long game, with many areas, where u wonīt meet your opponent very soon, then i would suggest "Marathon" (playable as XL + under).

Remember, u can only have ONE "rmg.txt" file in your DATA folder. Means, if u have played Jebus Cross a few times and want to change to Marathon now, u have to move/delete the existing rmg.txt (which is the renamed Jebus Cross) from your DATA folder and then copy the "marathon.txt" file there and rename this one to "rmg.txt".

Just take a look at all these "templates" on the link i gave ya, read the descriptions and decide which one fits your choices.

Have fun.

Okay, let me talk this back to you in my own words just to make sure I understand.

I go to the site and click on the "random" option. This brings up a list of maps. I scroll down to the one I want (thanks for the suggestions BTW) and download the "script." The "script" is like a blueprint for the map and upon generation, it will populate the map with random creatures, artifacts, etc, while still keeping the structure of landscape(?). Cool.

Anyway, I download the script by "saving-as," then change the name to "rmg.txt" right into the Heroes 3 Complete data folder. Now everytime I create a random map, it will automatically generate it using the template from the map I downloaded.

Questions: Can I still set up the number of players, select my starting town/hero/random artifact/gold/resource? Wouldn't it take the option of islands/underground away because the template is already set up a certain way? (That's fine if it does- I just want to understand how it works.)

Now, if I want to change to a different custom template, I have to delete or move the "rmg.txt" from the data folder then download the new one. Again, I still need to rename it as I save it to the data folder as rmg.txt, correct? Just curious- how does the game recognize different downloaded maps if they have the same name in the folder?

One last question- Is it correct to say that the diffrence between a "custom random map" and a regular "custom map" is that the random map is populated randomly, where the regular custom maps are set up with their own creatures/artifacts/resources that never change?

Thanks Angelito - much appreciated.

Number of palyers depends on the settings of each template. Mostly they are set for 2 players. Some are made for 3 and 4 players.

All these random maps are set without water. Underground is possible with some of them, with others not. Just read what it says in the description.

Itīs not the name what counts, but the ingredients. All these templates are filled with numbers and columns. Just open one of them (best way would be Excel) and take a look, then u will see

Donīt know if i get u right here. The custom maps (we call them "fixed maps") are completely pre-set, except some random monsters or arties perhaps, but the whole map is completely drawn already. A custom random map works the same way like a "computer random map". All the randoms u played so far are based on "3DO-made" templates, whith names like "Meeting in Muzgob", "Ring", "Dragons", "Dwarventunnels", "8xlm8", "2s6m" or similar. Perhaps u have read these names already when u created a random map and then checked the "info" about the map. There it says: Random map was created based on "enter template name here"....blablabla". All these templates are implemented as one file (named rmg.txt) in ONE big file in the DATA directory. If the comp creates a random map now, he searches for the rmg.txt and takes a template where your current choices fit. If u place an OWN rmg.txt directly in your DATA folder, he will take this one instead of searching for the original file.
These templates help to make specific settings u like to have on your map.
I have made a post where i give the basic explanations about these templates and what each column and number means in this thread. Perhaps u read this one, then u will prolly be able to create your own template the way YOU like it to be..
If u need help, just ask....

Okay. I think I understand the last part.

One last question. Initially, will I be replacing an already existing "rmg.txt" text file- the one original that comes with the game? If so, what happens if I want to go back to that after swapping in downloaded maps?

Thanks again for all the help.

Nope. The original "rmg.txt" file is implemented in another file. As far as i remember, itīs one of the ".lod" files. So u canīt do anything wrong with new rmg.txt files. If u want to play an "original" template again, u should have NO "rmg.txt" file in your DATA folder, so the comp will search it in the ".lod" file.
