John Cheese's Ten most overrated bands

(from PointlessWasteOfTime.com)

My own list would look similar except I'd put Linkin Park in their probably around the middle. (actually I can't even turn on the radio these days without wanting to reach for some heavy object)

Your name just doesn't seem to translate into Nick

anyway, you sound like a music type of dude after my heart.
Since you seem to be tuned in nowadays why don't you list the last 5 things you heard that are both new and good at the same time.  Warning though, if they suck I'm going to give you the silliest nick I can think of.

I can only think of two:
1.  Soundtrack to Ghost in the Shell (original movie)
2.  "Witching Hour" by Ladytron

okay so today I put "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zep 4) on my system, recorded it, reversed it and then listened to it.  Here's what happened:

I got the urge to worship Satan for like 4 minutes until the song got slow, and also

I got the urge to study German.

Anyway about 3 and a half minutes into the song (4.5 the right way) I clearly heard the word "Satan".  So I snipped that part and listened to it over and over.  And I am 100% confident that Robert Plant was saying:

"Now we all woulda made a path for the night we said we'd serve him: Satan"

You can verify this for yourself.  I made an MP3, if anybody wants to hear it just HCM me with your email and I'll send it probably tomorrow or soon after.

The Legendary Metal Specialist

Hm. Well, basically I grown up listening to The Beatles (all albums + countless single collections), though I wasn't particularly into music as a child. My bro played those records all the time, so I heard them a lot. I still consider them to this day as one of the very best and most objectively influent bands of all times. Apart from that, I was very much a fan of a TV show called Le Top 50 at the time in France (think mid-80's), which was your typical series of clips from the current top-sellers. I didn't actually listen to any of those songs, but I enjoyed them on TV on a regular basis.

When I was 10, my older sis had a boyfriend who listenned to lots of 70's pop, rock and just a tiny little bit of hard rock in the mix. My sis borrowed him some rock compilation tape he had made, and I borrowed her that tape, just curious. Turned out that tape included "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC (from the Back In Black album, 1980). The discovery of that one song and through it, of metal music in general, changed my life forever.

All went pretty quick from that point forward. I bought all AC/DC albums, listenned to them a lot. Grown curious about other bands of the same musical horizons. Tried some out. Bought some rock and metal magazines. Became a metalhead. And 3 years later, bought a guitar. Started doing my own music (been doing that for the past 16 years or so now). And simultaneously, kept my genuine passion for music in general, rock in particular and metal to be more specific.

I know and listen to so many different bands it would hardly make sense to bore u to death listing them. This includes bands from the 70's / 80's the most, but also many much older than that, and quite some from the 90's and to the present days. And style wise, it goes from classic hard rock / heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Accept, Iron Maiden, Dio... to melodic power/speed metal (Helloween, Blind Guardian, Savage Grace, Crimson Glory, Agent Steel, Freternia, Helstar... to thrash metal ( Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Megadeth, Destruction, Tankard, Kreator... to old school death metal (Possesed, Death, Napalm Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Dismember, Tiamat... to modern black/death/dark/gothic extreme metal (Old Man's Child, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Bewitched, Children Of Bodom, Obtained Enslavement, Cradle Of Filth, Theriomorphic... and on and on.

Though I really like newer and softer bands like The Offspring, Papa Roach, Evanescence, Muse and others, I tend to be really ****ed off by almost whatever so-called "new / nu / neo /n*** metal" bands.

The vast majority of those bands specialize in pretty generic ripp-offs of former bands. They are bands specifically created, designed, and marketted for the chunk of the mainstream audience that likes to get a cheap thrill thinking they are listenning to rebel music. Not at all bands for actual metal fans. Sort of like a fan of good old genuine 70's funk music (which I also like) listening to the continuous-ripp-offs-made-style that record companies boldly named RNB in the recent years. When you know the original bands and songs they ripped their riffs, styles, looks and ideas from, you can hardly take those trendy bands seriously.

Basically the same phenomenon occured in the early 90's, though that time it was first called subpop (then renamed to grunge to sound more provocative for the kids). A few really good bands arose from that labels-created scene, like Nirvana obviously. But it certainly wasn't worth mass-brainwashing the sheep masses of the mainstream audience into thinking that type of music had anything new and innovative to it.

Anyways, it's the way it goes in the music industry. If you want art, you ahve to scratch the surface and see for yourselves. Most stuff on the radio isn't even representative of how vast and intense music as an artform can be.

Hmpf. That should give ya an idea of what music means to me.
For all it's worth... lol

Yeah Legend AC/DC was my favourite band for ages, have all their CDs in a collectors set and everything, only band I've done that for

I don't really like all that death metal, and I HATE emo music.

I like rock mostly, and a few popular songs, and the only rap I like is KANYE WEST haha and only a few of his oh and outkast has some songs and Gorillaz, apart from that not into hip hop and all that ghetto

But my music taste changes ALL THE TIME, I have one playlist called "Now" (dont ask, I don't know), where I put all the songs I like ATM in if I like them and regularly delete the ones at the bottom that I get sick of.

Always liked rock like RHCP, and their new album is pretty good too, Oasis, Powderfinger, Jimmy Eat World, Incubus, Hunters and Collectors, Creed, Nickelback, Helmet, We Are Scientists, and 3 doors down some older ones like Nirvana.

Then theres the electric/indie rock bands like Wolfmother, The Killers, The Bravery, The Butthole Surfers, The Dandy Warhols and Interpol.

And the easier rock music like Lifehouse, Massive Attack, Coldplay, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Autolux, World Without Sundays,  and Eskimo Joe.
