Hi all! I am so excited when i stumbled on this forum! I am new but i have played HOMM3 exclusively on Single Player since '98 and guess i'd start off by sharing with you my experiences playing my favourite town : The Necropolis
Mostly i play XL maps that have huge amounts of monsters, towns and artifacts ^^

1. Starting Hero:

A) Death Knights
These guys are my prefered sub hero. My favourite death knights are: Lord Haart, Isra and Charna. I shall explain why:

Lord Haart
+5 dmg to dread knights. When dread knight unit gets double dmg *and* good luck its the most beautiful blow to your enemy hehe.

Isra
Awesome skeleton generator! Galthran is ok but i dun really fancy armorer. More explainations on ideal secondary skills later.

Charna
Starts with basic tactics! Also specialises in wraiths/wights and she is perfect for 2nd necro hero IMO. Endgame she must have a unit of at least 250+ wraiths and expert tactics + offense and she rocks!

B) Necromancers
Not much a favourite but still a viable option to win. I see Septienna, Thant and Vidomina as ideal necromancers.

Septienna
Her scholar skill may come in handy for teaching spells to heroes of your entire kinggom. Eg : You can's get Animate Dead for nuts but you have Sep as your sub hero. Along pops Thant at the tavern at the start of a new week yay! Recruit Thant and he teaches Sep animate dead and she teaches all the rest hehe.

Thant
I hate Thant actually but if you get frustrated at not getting animate dead then just recruit him and hopefully you have sub heroes that have at least advanced scholar (Sep, Alamar, etc)

Vidomina
A less offensive version of Isra, i like to give her navigation skill and make her my sailor if there are vast bodies of water in the map ^^

2. Key spells
This may be pretty obvious to experienced players but just sharing

Earth Magic:
Slow
Animate Dead
Town Portal

With a mobile necro hero that never suffers any casualty fighting monsters and mostly comp thanks to animate dead and town portal with earth magic skill at least at advanced level this combo rocks!

Fire Magic
Bloodlust
Blind

Think of pesky enemy unit blinded and finished off with blood lusted legions of skeletons lol

Air Magic
Haste
Dimension Door
Fly

Expert Tactics + Expert Air Magic = What slow skellies?
Dimension Door and Fly just take the mobility of your heroes to a higher level.

Water Magic
Summon Boat
Clone
Dispel

Blind pesky last enemy unit. Clone vamps, power liches and huge skelly unit. Mmmm

3. Secondary Skills choices

My choice of secondary skills for the necro hero (endgame)
1) Expert Necomancy
Starting skill - nice skeleton army! Even more so early on with Isra or Vidomina
2) Expert Offense
See bloodlusted legions of skellies coupled with expert offense take down the mightiest monsters in the game Dread Knights esp Lord Haart's ones do awesome dmg!
3) Expert Wisdom
Well Town Portal, Dimension Door, Fly and Implosion. Enuff said!
4) Expert Earth Magic
With the ability to mass slow, whizz around any town if you have town portal whats not to like?
5) Expert Archery
How does this coupled with a golden bow or bow of the sharp shooter sound with a respectable 2*units of power liches which attacks bunches of enemy units sound? Hehe
6) Expert Intelligence
For epic battles you need all the mana to blind, clone, animate dead and what not. Not to mention non battle activities like trasferring salvaged artifacts to sub heroes, etc
7) Expert Air Magic
Mass Haste, Fly an Dimension Door 4 times a day! Also there were times when i was attacked in my castle by an extremely strong enemy. Chain Lightning enemy catapult to smiterins to ensure only his flying units get over the wall. Yes u heard me - implosion does not work with catapults lol Let your liches and vamp lords slowly wear him down, Oh you do have an ammo cart right?
8) Expert Tactics
Protect your liches or set your Ghost Dragons, Vamps, Dread Knights, etc to kill off enemy shooting units at the start of the battle.

4. Awesome Artifacts
Cloak of the Undead King
This is king of all necromantic artifacts! Made up of the vamp cowl, dead man's boots and undead necklace this coupled with expert necromancy gives you liches or power liches! What better hero to generate these awesome shooting horros than good ole Isra

Golden Bow/Bow Of the Sharpshooter
Liches do awesome dmg and with the latter they can even carry on shooting even with an enemy unit standing beside them..wow!

Angelic Alliance
Extremely hard to find but if you obtain em - gg Even some pieces of it are awesome!

Titan's Thunder
Not so hard to find - just visit Dragon Utopias and sooner or later you'd have all the pieces. I love this set as the necklace, cloak and boots spots are empty and if i do find pieces of the Cloak of the Undead King then its gg

Q: How to increase the chances to obtain these artifacts?

1) Try to observe enemy units and if possible conquer dungeon, tower or conflux towns first. They all allow the constuction of artifact merchants and there were times that i obtained my cloak of undead king or bow of the hsarpshooter with this tactic hehe.

2) Shackles of War
Mmm an awesome yet simple artifact! Have a strong main hero to take down enemies and loot all their artifacts when you defeat them as this artifact prevents them from running away! If you happen to see one in the map - marshal all your forces and crush whatever guardian preventing you from obtaining it.

5. Pointers
A. Secondary Skill progression
This could be a whole lot easier if you had a conflux town in the XL map. The magic university inside the conflux town offers earth and air magic @ a price of 2k gold. Also visit witch huts, universities ans scholars. I save the game first when i visit a scholar/witch hut and if the skill offered sucks i reload Or if you want a 'boost' but not the kind where the game gets too easy just go to map editor and add a witch hut/s with the choice of secondary skills. I advise against giving your hero any troop, artifact or experience though.

B. Skeleton Generation
Flag any lvl 1 monster dwelling! They are free to recruit and with your skeleton tranformer @ the necropolis that could add up. My favourite is the peasant's hovel where up to 25 peasants per dwelling could turn into skeletons! Another novel way is to recruit a 'diplomat' i.e a hero solely to talk creatures into joining your army. A good one would be the castle cleric Adela with her starting dipomacy skill and if you have no use for the dipomat's sash that collecting dust just give her some troops and see her patrol the map and making throngs of lvl 1-2 monsters get fooled into thinking they are destined for 'greater glory' and instead end up with a visit to the skelton transformer! Wicked Also leave walking dead dwelling unupgraded and if you have gold to spare simply recruit them and transform them into skeletons hehe

C. General Creature Generation
Always check artifact merchants, black markets, etc for pieces of the Statue of the Legion. Flag any external dwelling that belongs to your necropolis.

D. Mobility
If your map bans town portal, dimension door and fly then an alternative would be the logistics skill and 'chaining' This works like runners in a relay run whereby if a threat is spotted then units and possibly artifacts are transferred by heroes well running and passing to the next one till everything is transfered to the threatened spot.

E. Gold Making
Rampart towns are awesome with the treasury building! What i do is on day 7 i sell some resources for as much gold as i can. Where to sell? Depending on the number of marketplaces u have check the rates here as well as nearby tading posts Dragon Utopias could give you as much as 30k gold if you are lucky and always flag gold mines and build city halls @ all newly conqured castles as soon as possible if your resources allow it hehe

Thank you and hope what i shared wasn't too shabby I soo glad to see so many people playing this game! I'm not too hot with Fortress town and hopefully someone could share their expereiences with me! Good day!

Hello

First of all, thanks for sharing your "singleplayer" tactics and knowledge. I´m pretty sure, winning against the computer is already boring most of the time for you.
Real challenges could u get by playing vs other human players online. This will be a totally different gameplay. And u will learn pretty fast, most of the skills which helps vs the comp are useless vs human players. One of the first things u will recognize, will be the fact, armorer is one of the best skills u can have. Logistics is always the best choice.
Search here in the library for specific threads about secondary skills. Easiest way would be to look uo the sticky thread on page 1 called "table of contents".
