Poll Question:
Death to Heroes 3!

Hey, what the hell happened?  When did this place become one giant place for people to hang and not talk about Heroes?  Do you know how many thread there are about Heroes in the top 20?  4!!!!  There are only 4 threads in the top 20 of the Tavern that truly deal with Heroes at 11:30 this Sunday night.  Four!!!  That is freaking sad!  You don't believe me?  Here they are:

"When Did You Start Playing HOMM? "

"TOURNAMENT: Round One Matchups!"

"The Hommahollic Survey; what is youre level of addiction "

"Do we play Heroes? "

Two of them are akward poles that are desperately trying to make threads about Heroes, one actually celebrates playing the game this webpage is about, and the last one says it all!!!!  Want to see the other crap that is taking up 80%, that's right 80%, of this page?  Here are a few of them:

"Word Association Game III"

"Oh Boy I can change my avatar now..hmm but which one to chose "

"A new Homm Community site. "

Damn, the last one is about people who actually have the nerve to start a new one, which will undoubtedly have more useless threads like: "I want 20 avatars!"

Okay, I don't come here that often, but why should I?  What is there to atract me?  I used to come here as often as my time allowed, but now I find I learn more about Heroes from playing the damn game.

The (I hope) majority of the people who come here for a Heroes based site can't even post enough combined to match the 20 or so that post non-stop about pure drivel!

But what can we do?  If you have people communicating with each other long enough they will eventually become friend, enemies, and so forth.  The will want to know more about each other.  So there has to be threads about this non-sense.  But they was it is working now, there is nothing talking about Heroes in the Tavern.  If I want to discuss Heroes, I have to go to The Alter.  I would go to TOH, where it seems the true Heroes reside, but I don't have the dedication.  So, the question is:  What to do?

Val has suggested making a place called "Wasteland" for all these non-Heroes threads.  Will that be enough, or will it promote more of these strange threads? This is the problem.  At least it was suggested that posts in the Wasteland would get no points, even quality.

Now to the poll.  I know it is easier to post than vote, because that 90 second flood protector makes it hard to do both, but if would take the time to do so, I would appreciate it!

So . . . what is to be done?

Responses:
Create Wasteland.
Delete non-Heroes threads in Tavern.
Actively try to take back the board.
Lighten up.

I agree with malkia. Just look at thge description of the tavern. It says: Have some ale, tell us your story. But then again, I also don't find as many intersting threads here as I did when I joined.

How about "all of the above"?

The Tavern has long been a place for the unrelated threads, but that's not always a bad thing. Sometimes they generate interesting discussions that may have nothing to do with Heroes, but are worth reading all the same.

There are several things in the works that should help alleviate the problems you see here now.

One of those is the "Wasteland". Once this is up and running, a lot of the threads will probably be moved there.

Once that's done, with no post count addition, I'll bet a lot of those type of threads become a thing of the past. Some people seem to post just to rack up post counts. Take this away, and I think perhaps they'll be a bit more on-topic, or not post at all.

The addition of new people to the Mod Squad will also help. Presumably, it'll be easier to move things to the new forum when necessary, and contact mods to help deal with problems.

I know it's going to be a while before Heroes 4 comes out, but in the meantime, if you don't like what you're seeing, work to change it. This thread is a good start, but take the next step. Find a new way to look at an old question, or go back into the dust of the archives, and revive an old thread that's been pushed into obscurity that still has some value.

And above all, maintain a sense of perspective. In a few months, it'll all be different. And it'll still all be the same.

I am in full agreement with Lord Paul. All of these useless, non-heroes related threads should go to the wasteland, along with the people that post here( especially the ones that dont actually have any multi-player online experience or skills, you know who you are. so do we)

Although I am in agreement with you, it is not only multiplayer online experience that should count in this message board. I thought it was for everyone that played heroes, be it single player, hotseat or multi. You seem to have a distinct lack of respect for non-Zoners and those who aren't in ToH, but you should remember that Heroes doesn't have to be played over MSN for you to be able to post your opinions here. I think Arachnid is a non-online kinda gamer but I have respect for his opinions because he plays the game, only differently. And there are those who play HoMM2 a lot more than HoMM3 and those who do campaign only kinda things.

We do know who has never played Heroes, you can see it in their posts. But lets try not to make it sound like the entire board is a group on lonely non-Heroes playing people who gather in the tavern to talk about junk. Maybe it would help if you tried telling these people about Zone or other sites instead and tried to get them into ToH. I remember the first time you came to Zone to play Heroes. You were pretty daunted by everything and about tourney ladders etc. Now you're right up in the ToH hierarchy.

I'm just trying to say, remember your roots.

Well, I want to play multiplayer - but really don't have so much time - i mostly play saturday or sunday, and if i'm not on work on that days (we are again in those deadly deadlines and crunch time). When I was student i was having more time for multiplayer, but back in my country - there was no well spreaded internet by that time - and in my town there was one ISP which was providing speed 28kbps - but not for single connection.... but for all of them - can you imagine?

HOT SEAT was(is) really fun - yes some say - it's not the real game, like internet multiplayer - but after all you are having fun... actually i've played more hotseats on Heroes2 - i have still friend who only plays Heroes2 and think Heroes3 is not good - this is just his opinion - but he's very good... indeed...

Hey, LordPaul, this has been what I've been saying or at least thinking for a long time and btw, i appreciate u awarding my posts in the top 20%. U also gave one the bottom rating and I apologize again for this post, I too am tired of seeing silly posts about Avatars..However I didn't think it would be much use just replying to another post and asking for a better one since I always get ignored that way(as people don't tend to liek to read every reply in 450-reply long post, which I can understand) anyways as soon as I get my new Avatar that post shall be deleted and forgotten. Also I havent read all of the other replies for this yet BUT I think we should actively try to fight for this board and I have plenty of "ammo" in my gun, both on suggestions for improving this place and more humorous ones that will follow the original HOmmaholics. Also I wanted to add as some people mentioned this is a place for those "unrelated" posts and I personally have no problem with unrelated stuff just as long as its not the same ol' stuff such as Avatars. Btw if u wanna read another funny post, read Syllo's one entitled "Eric and the Gazebo" its not really heroes related but it is about as funny as they come...ok 4 real now folks I am going to BED!!

Banning threads unrelated to HOMM3/HC will only solve part of the problem.  A lot of good posters haven't benn to the bouard in months.  What we need is some fresh blood in here.  There are ca. 800 HC mebers, but the vast majority are "lurkers" with no posts or 1 post.  Some of these people are bound to have good ideas, and if we can get them to be regular posters, it will help to revialize the Heroes Community.

So you think all the threads about HoMM and HoMM2 (I know there aren't many of them) should be banned? This is Heroes Community, not Heroes3 Community, Coldyfirius. The fact that most HoMM fans play Heroes3 and never seen the previous ones doesn't mean anything.

You are overreacting.  Yeah I said HOMM3.  This was just a habitual thing, and not a statement about the worth of HOMM2.  Some people are just so sensitive.

What are you talking about Shae. I agree i may have some issues with the non multiplayer heroes. Basically being that single player is a totally diffentent game than multiplayer, thats all.

I have not played in TOH in months, and do not plan too until H4 comes out. you remember me? when i first came to the zone? doubtful, that was quite some time ago and i do not recall you there. I was not daunted and I am not up their in the TOH heirarchy, im rather low actually, too low  .

anyhow, later.

The problem may be that people are not responding to the hero related posts.(I tried many heroes threads I hoped would get alot more action than they did.)  If you don't want to read the unrelated posts my advice would be to ignore the tavern.  I see the tavern as a place to get to know the people in the HC.  I see the Alter as a place for wild speculation and hopes and fears about H4.  I see the library as a stategy guide, to talk about how to play the game better.(People don't go here enough)  If you want more heroes talk just post more good topics (or bring back old threads that are interesting) and alot of us would gladly respond.

There has been entirely too many post about stars and post counts and other silly things(many are taking such stuff far too seriously).  Also the personal insult posts are boring and tedious, if you want to post an insult to someone please make it funny or somewhat entertaining, otherwise just use the e-mail or IM options instead of killing the momentum of threads.

Well, I think banning Incubus and El_Diablo was a good move, if a little extreme.  El_Diablo did occasionaly have good points.  But atleast this clears up some things.

I don't think everyone here has to be an online gamer, or make every thread about Heroes.  I was just shocked at the amount that were not about Heroes, and I wanted to get a feel for what should be done.  Personaly, I like the Wasteland idea.

At any rate, it has been pointed out that not enough fresh blood is at this board.  I personaly came because I was searching for Heroes info, and happened to find this board in a link from Heroesofmightandmagic.com.

So how should we get fresh blood?  Recruit, try to get more links, or make this place more attractive?  Maybe if we could list some of the ways you found this board, we can figure out how to attract the Heroes fans that have never seen this before (notice, I didn't say create Heroes fans, but find the ones that are missing).

I found the board on a random search for Heroes 4 info.

One problem for people is when new people join they make alot of posts about subjects that are just a few pages back in the index, so the "regular" posters don't respond.  Please breathe some life into posts, and come up with original Ideas, be they odd or funny or challanging.

I for one am sorry to see Incubus go, he did start alot of topics and debates, and I think that if we just didn't bait him so much he would not have been that much of a problem.

(If you miss the little troublemaker you can read all about it in his BIZZARRO heroes community.)

Yes, Mike, I do remember you. You wouldn't remember me because I didn't actually speak to you. I just watched. Still doesn't change the fact that you hold single player posters opinions in less esteem though does it?

The problem with the board is that things have been done to DEATH by us. I'm not sure about the mathematics, but I'd guess that the TOP 40 posters actually account for something like 55 percent of the entire post count for the board (11,500 posts). Now that leave the other 754 posters with the remaining 45 percent. Not exactly an even split is it?

We've done our bit on HoMM3, we've said what we need to say. It is inevitable that in our old age we fall to the pitiful levels that we're at now, impatiently awaiting the arrival of HoMM4. Very few fresh approaches have been taken to old threads. Can you blame us? How can you ask us after 11,500 posts to do something new with something that we've done to death?

The board does need some serious cleaning up and things need to be dumped in the wasteland real fast. Haak, I don't think that threads of 'worthless' nature will die. I think it will merely serve to shift the focus away from post counts and yellow stars. I'll still post in a wasteland thread, I couldn't care less about post counts. Maybe some of us will be relegated to an old nursing home, to live out our days in HoMM3 wasteland obscurity, so be it. But we've fought our wars, we've sculptured parts of the board, now the onus is on the newbies to add their piece of thinking to it.

The HC will never die. People will always find things to talk about, HoMM4, new tactics that come up, new tourneys, new expansion dics and of course, the ever present tension that arises when people post opinions on the same board day after day. It's kinda like watching a video with the fast forward button broken. We don't know what's going to happen, but we can always rewind it to see the bits that we might have missed.

*smile*

Its always nice to see people (that have the same interest in games) talk about other (non HOMM related) stuff.

Let's take a somewhat less heavy topic: how about LIVE AFTER DEATH!
