I'm in favor of the Wasteland.  The Tavern will be purged of those things that many HOMM fnas do not care about, and it can serve its function all the better because of it.

Tavern = Wasteland

I think a problem is that the Alter has now become the official Heroes board.  I've seen stuff in there that, even thought I don't mind it being there, should be in the tavern.  Like, "why are Titans grey" & "Dragon/Titan rivalry".  Even if someone has the thought to post it somewhere else, if it doesn't deal with Heroes 4, then they put it in the Library.  Look at Oldtimer and his best level threads.  I wonder if it even occured to him that that might belong in the Tavern.  They're good threads (I know, they are repeats, but 50-60% of the posters here haven't had a chance to post on the old ones), but I don't think he would of wanted to post them in the Tavern because it would be ignored.

Face it, the Tavern is the Wasteland.  Just change the name, remove the post counts (that can't be easy!! and you'd have the Wasteland.  Make the Library into the new non-future Heroes games thread.  Why seperate Map making, Heroes Trivia, Heroes Humor, Heroes Help, and Heroes questions into different threads?  One should be enough for all these catagories if the current trend is any example.  And if they were all placed together, then maybe the Heroes threads would pick up speed.

Worth a shot!

Lord Paul

Sorry, but I disagree with you in saying that the Altar has become the Board. I think the exact opposite has occurred. The altar has become the wasteland, there are so many repeated and useless threads in there that it's now become a virtual joke. You and Oldtimer and a few others have served to keep the Altar about wishes and not about ranting junk.

The tavern was always taken as a place where you could talk about almost anything, HoMM related or not. I guess it's where I have begun to post more at lately, but dare I say that probably half of my posts were focussed on the ToH forum once. Most of the more contentious ToH posters have disappeared from the board or now merely post once in a while in the Kuma's Tavern thread. Once upon a time, the ToH forum was the focal point of the board, that and Tymeria. True HoMM discussions used to take place there. Once upon a time.

Not sure if many of you remember Tymeria, but that forum was CLEAN. I never posted there because I didn't think it was my place to post in a forum about a tournament which I wasn't a part of, but I did visit it and read the threads. All of it was very good stuff.

The altar of wishes has been the hole in the parachute if you ask me. I had a nice, high altitude view of the board, but since that hole opened up I find myself but a few metres from crash landing into a tangled tree of posters and threads that few of us can (or care to) follow.

I think you'll see the Wishes forum shrink considerably and the tavern turned into the Wasteland. I can't see much happening with the TOH forum as Ves and Deth seem to have iron grips over their moderating domains.

I think one of the reasons why the ToH forum is not completely full of rubbish is because Ves will not hesitate to close useless threads. I haven't seen a closed thread in the Altar or in the Tavern at all....

Maybe the answer lies there.

Wastelands yes or no?

After reading all the posts in this thread I think that what is really needed is to just delete some of the ones that are just a waste of space.  As Shae pointed out the tavern is supposed to be for just chatting about anything and everything not just heroes related topics.  Its like going to the pub for a drink with ppl from work...its for getting to know other players and not just discuss heroes.

There are some really odd posts around and maybe they could be deleted but there are also some trivial ones that are just some lighthearted fun and I cant see anything very wrong with that.

I have just discovered recently that this is a great place to spend time when you are waiting for a game or when you are playing an opponent who takes long turns..

Why dont you let the heroes community members do the voting for each thread and if they dont think a thread is worth having here then surely they wont make lots of posts to it.

I agree with malkia and Still. Untill H4 is out, there are no clear lines between some (different) topics, and everything is a bit chaotic...
And the tavern is made for both heroes and non-heroes stuff. But I also agree LordPaul that it's unbalanced.

Did it ever occur to me to post the Best of... series in the Tavern?

No.

The tavern is the place to post BS, and personal issues, and non heroes topics etc.  I think that the library is greatly underused--It's the place were you are supposted to talk about HOMM 1,2,3 Stategy & Trvia.  The Best of... series is all about strategy and trivia.  The reason people have a best creature is because of the strategy they use.  It is easy to say I like dragons, but when you justify their use you are talking game strategy.  Or trivia if the answer is I like pixies because their HOT (hubba hubba).

LordPaul I applaud your efforts at policing inappropriate thread placement.  I drives me crazy to see good threads go to the back because of a bunch of threads that should go into the tavern.

I see the wasteland as a kind of banished thread area.  Sometimes a thread starts out ok then turns into a personal conversation with 3 or 4 word replies that quickly turn it uninteresting for everyone except for the 2 posters.

I afraid there is nothing we can do about it. Anyway people will continue to post their messages (good/bad). We just cant say: "Send us your message first and than we decide can you post it or not". But i think that it's good that someone cares about this message board (its like virtual home for me )

Babylon . . .

I know this is unrelated, but Incubus was the master of taking threads and making them posting parties over stupid arguements that he made.  The longer he is gone, the less I miss him.

I have really never visited the TOH thread, because I felt it was truly for the players.  I really don't play Heroes online because of the time commitment.  But if it is as good as Shae implies, then maybe I will give it a shot . . . after we finally finish our game.

Oldtimer, you are right.  The library is where all the Heroes stuff goes, but when I first arrived there was the Tavern, for all Heroes threads and small stuff, the Map Making thread which was woefully underposted, and the Alter of Wishes.  TOH and Tymeria were still around.  Then Tymeria shut down (you did a good job Pluvious!) and the Library was created in stead.  Since then there has been much less Heroes-related topics in the Tavern.  I don't blame the Library, but the fact that someone may have been attracting these goldstar posters, here for the glory, at the time.

I also think once the "Favorite Band" posts caught on, it created a lot of bad clones.

The discusions about Creature Levels and town strategies was, at one point, in the Tavern.  That was the place.  That is why I asked if it ever occured to you to post there.

What it gets down to, though, is the need for new mods.  Shae claims that Deth and Ves are doing a great job, so maybe we need more like them. (Angelspit, you're doing great, but you got the Celestial Heavens thing, too.  Val, you maintain the site, that is hard enough.)

The problem is that being a mod isn't easy.  I'm not sure it is even fun.  When you post you have to take all sides into consideration, try to resolve problems, and make complicated decisions, not to mention the red star system.  It is like being a police officer at a party.  You want to join in, but at the same time you have a job to do.

Well, at least we are trying to come up with possible solutions - we are making progress.

What about those "apprentice of heroes"...

Val mentioned them...
I see them as posters that maintain their role as poster but sametime can try to keep the board in the right way by making little comments and directing issues to right boards. Also they could do little work for mods as showing which post would get quality points and so on. Mod and Val would do the final decision about qps and penalties but these apprentices would make suggestions. They would have to act very politely and honorable without showing any abuse of their "power".

I see some potential candidates to become "apprentices" already now...
