just trying to get back to HOMM 2

Hello all,

I am new to the forums.  I was a HUGE fan of HOMM and HOMM 2 way back when, and I played part 3 quite a bit as well.  I have the Heroes of Might and Magic Millenium Edition, which I am trying to get to load on my computer (which runs Windows XP Home version)  However, I can't even get SETUP.EXE to load.  When I try and run it, the computer accesses the CD ROM drive for a couple seconds, then does nothing.

Is there a patch or a particular (different) install program that I need to run?  I'm mostly trying to get HOMM 2 to install/play (this is one of my all time favorite games, for any platform, and easily my favorite computer game) I have a feeling that this question has been asked before, so if someone could be so kind as to point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
A Few Peasants

Welcome to our board

As far as i remember, the Millenium edition is made for "Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me" and NOT for XP.
You could try the following:
Rightclick the setup.exe, properties, chose compatibilty mode. There u enable "Windows 98". Now run this file again. If it works, fine. If not, please let me know.

I just tried it in compatibility mode for Win 95, Win 98/XP, and Win 2000.  I got the same response for each as I did when I just tried to run SETUP.EXE normally.

I think somewhere back at my parent's place, I have the original DOS version, or I am sure I could get it cheaply off eBay.  Am I better off trying to run the game with DOS BOX than using Millenium Edition?  Quite honestly, I've been wanting to play this game for about three years without success!

Strange. Iīm pretty sure i played it on my current comp, which also runs XP home.
Heroes 3 works fine i guess?
Or is the the millenium version just 1 cd for all 3 games?
Donīt u have an autostart function on your cd-rom drive? Shouldnīt the "autoexe" screen show up automatically and give u the choice of installing or playing?

Homm 2 should be easy to get on ebay. And its worth every cent.. Get the Homm 2 "GoldEditon", which contains the addon "Price of Loyality" as well (if i remember correct).

For some reason, the Autorun function isn't happening when I put the CD in the drive.  The Millenium version (or at least the version I have) is a seperate disc for each HOMM game.  I will try to play around with it a little more later on, but for now, I have to get to work.  Thanks for the help up to this point!

As far as i know, Homm2 should run under XP (dunno about 64 systems). You can try to download Heroes of might and magic demo and see if it starts. Also you can copy your CD to hard disk and start setup.exe from hard drive or test the CD in an other CD-ROM. If that does not give a clue, updating drivers (graphics, sound, CD-ROM) cannot hurt. Also disabling windows autostart programs may help.

I could be wrong but I think that Windows 98 compatability mode in Windows XP thing only works for files that are actually on the hard drive. Try copying the entire CD contents to hard drive and then change the properties of the autorun file or the game setup.exe files to windows 98 compatibily mode.

it's a christmas miracle!  i just put the CD in to try again, and lo and behold, not only did autoran start up, the game ran!  it seems to be a little slow and the music is choppy, but I didn't even try to run it in Win 98 mode.  Overall, things are looking good.  Thanks to all with the help.  Now is there really much HOMM 2 discussion on this board?  It seems very heavily biased towards HOMM 3.
