"Richard, let's stop for the night," Mvass said, "I want these wounds to heal before continuing."

Richard looked at the sun beginning its decent for the night. It was nearly dusk. Richard as well as many others had not slept a wink the night before. A good night's rest would do most everyone good. He nodded in agreement at Mvass and turned to the rest of the group calling their attention.

“It will be dusk very soon and Mvass has requested that we stop for the night until morning,” Richard waited for everyone to turn their attention to him. “The sun will set very soon and Mvass has requested that we stop and rest until morning. I agree with him. This is a good campsite. Many of us have sustained minor injuries or slept very little to none at all last night. So we will stop early today, but we will be up well before dawn tomorrow. I’m going to gather firewood.”

Richard turned and walked down the path and headed into the woods.

In the dark recesses of Marks mind, he struggled to gain control of his body once more.

He flipped through the planes, searching for the creature that had possessed him.

The first plane was his normal vision. He had watched, helplessly, as the party was attacked by scorpion wolves.

He flipped to the second. The elements disappeared. The earth beneath him, the sky above, and even Mvass seemed to become hard to see, obviously having fireblood. He still could see Richard as he was questioned by him, but Mark was helpless to answer.

Then to the third. Planewalking was second nature to Mark. Normally one would have to study Mind School for their whole lives, and learn the Spirit and Body Schools to be able to see the different planes, let alone the four elemental Schools. But the Spellweavers could manipulate the very essence of the old Magic, difficult, but training in all kinds of energy transferral. The third plane caused the adventurers to disappear, leaving only a shadow of their weak spirits. The plane of the supernatural, the immortal.

And there it was. He looked down, and did not see his own faint soul, but the dark, blackened spirit of the Scath, which had stopped at the campsite with the others. But something was different. It had fallen to the floor.

"What are you doing, human?" It scowled at him. "How are you doing this?" The beast had been thrown into chaos. It was seeing what Mark saw, but not being a Spellweaver it was blinded by the planeswalking.

"I am going to the keep, beast, and if you think you can stop me I think you'll find otherwise. Free me, or will I have to banish you?"

The creature laughed, a laugh to mimic a scream of agony and torture, and although the other companions couldn't hear it, Mark could sense their disturbance.

"Banish me? You have no power now, mortal. I am sent from the Guardian. You have no idea of my strength."

"Not true, Scath."

Scath was stunned. His name was known.
"How can you speak this?" It asked, not only blinded but now weakened by Marks powers.

"We have met before." Mark said.

"You cannot, you can't, I have you.." It shut it's eyes and grit it's teeth in concentration, and put all its powers into resisting Mark, as he began to cast.

Mark couldn't use his most powerful magic as his hands, his implements of manipulating magic, have been chained by the beast. But he focused in his mind, drawing all the power he could from his surroundings.

He flipped straight to the seventh plane, the elemental plane of Fire. Everything had disappeared except for two things; the campfire, and Mvass. Mvass turned around suddenly, and looked at Mark, but dismissed it and went back to his wound.

Mark focused on the fire. Scath tried to resist, tried to turn him away from the fire, but it was no use. He drew the fire towards him, the flames licking closer and closer to him, until a sudden burst sent them through his limp hands into his body, as the creature let out a cry, and an explosion of light sent a shockwave from his body out.

Mark cried out, breathing heavily as if he had just awoken from a nightmare. He sat up, and looked at the others with wide eyes.

"I am free, from my.. enslavement.." He said, before collapsing from exhaustion.

Mark awoke again, while it was still dark. The campfire was going again.

"What's wrong?" The elemental Mvass asked.

Mark was short of breath, bewildered, but came to his senses.

"I, ah... ever since we left from town I have not been in control.. of myself. I was possessed, before our first encounter with the Scorpion hounds. Yes, I could see what was going on, but I was unable to move, speak, or act... chained."

He took a swig of water from his cantina, and a deep breath.

"I apologize, that I couldn't help in the fight. I was powerless. It was a spirit that kept me helpless, sent from a powerful magus.. Someone out there doesn't want me to aid this group." He said in a grim tone.

He lifted his hand up in the air, fingers to the sky. It burst into flames.

He took it to a log and placed it in the dying fire, unscathed.

"I should be able to help, from now on."

"Here drink it. It's tee I made for you after I saw you collapse. It will regenerate your body and... soul.

Mark eyed Annunhalion carefully, but took the cup from his hands and took a carefull sip...

The tea seemed to warm his cold body from the inside, and restored his energy.

Mark smiled at Annunhalion.
"Thankyou." he said, took another sip, and stared off into the woods.

"I know you must be regretting taking me on this journey, but I promise I won't let you down in the future."

Mark felt a disturbing presence, of someone watching him... not close, but watching from afar.

As the night grew cooler I wondered what the mage was rambling on about. Seemingly, the demon that once possessed him had now lost control. Pity actually. I creeped out into the forest to gather wood for the fire as well, since Richard too went out to accomplish the same task. Though being from the underdark for so long I realized that above ground creatures depended on light and warmth to survive. I could have lasted the night just fine without being bothered by the cold. I noticed Richard and walked in his direction calling out to him.

"Shall you be posting a night watchman? In case any more of those beasts show up. I'm sure that none of us want to find out throats cut open in our sleep."

Annunahalion looked at Mark who now was staring into the dark wood and wondered as to what realy went on inside the man. He seemed relieved yet disturbed. He would have to find out more about him. He sat down next to him and with a smile on his face said

"It's quite all right. We all have our...personal deamons to battle. It just has to come sooner or later."

Then he turned to Richard with the words

"If you want a night guard, I'll gladly stay up. Robin here has taught how to remain vigilant at night, so I would be glad to help."

Richard turned to the voice calling him and saw Ike, hiding under his cloak as usual. Though he knew the drow had said he trusted the group with his life, he still did not trust the man. Richard could nearly always sense something ulterior in the words and actions of those he met. These signals coming from the drow rung in his head making it impossible not to notice. There was no way he could leave this man on watch by himself. And that was most certainly the purpose of asking such a question. He would make sure everyone took watch in pairs. But who would take watch with Ike? Definitely the strongest of the group. Perhaps Hathar would be best. That dwarf never seemed to stop talking and he had done wonders against the scorpion wolves.

"Why of course," Richard said. "There will be a watch group. I was going to tell everyone their shifts when I get back, but I guess I can tell you that you'll be on watch with Hathar. You seem to be having trouble getting to know some people in the group. He seems like a friendly fellow, so I thought I'd have you go on watch with him."

The Guardian had hoped Scath could hold his own against the spellweaver, but it had been banished from Mark's mind more quickly than anyone had ever freed themselves before. Yet, the spellweaver had made a crucial mistake in revealing that he was a planeswalker. Great peril awaited him if Mark ever returned to the realm of shadows, and the Guardian intended to drive him back in at any cost.

You would not escape my own grasp as easily as that brute, Scath, he thought. The spellweaver could not hear this claim, but he would know the truth of it in time. Unless, of course, some secret of his companions could free him. The Guardian would have to prepare for all possible paths.

Yet, perhaps He would not need to face the party all at once.

Richard had completely ignored Annuhalion's offer, and the Guardian saw a flicker of resentment settle in the elf's eyes then vanish as quickly as it had come. Maybe this party needed no help in dividing, as power set with power often bred conflict within a weary group of travellers faced with a difficult road ahead. Richard had merely failed to hear him, but that misunderstanding could herald the start of something more. Only time would tell, and, though they may not have needed help in parting ways, He would gladly spare some.

Isildur, a soft whisper coursed through the ranger's mind, why don't you offer to keep watch with Ike? Perhaps then you can resolve what's been troubling you. A mix of surprise and dismay contorted the ranger's face; he had no doubt caught on that this was foul play, but the voices in his head promised silence and security from the ruins of an age long past should he accept. He had to choose between the companions he had met only two days before and a past that stretched back as far as he could remember.

One question settled into the Guardian's mind: would Isildur take the bait? Only time would tell; it always did.

A test it seemed to me, that Richard would pair me up with an accursed dwarf. I simply smiled and replied.

"A wise decision. As we both are capable of seeing extremely well in the dark. No foe shall sneak upon us this night unless of course if Hathar decides to sleep instead. I can tell you still...find me unsettling and untrustworthy since I need a...companion. I assure you that I rarely get tired after all, where I'm from...it's best to not sleep much at all or to learn to sleep with your eyes open. Quite a useful trick I'd say. But I'd be happy to watch with him."

I glanced around picking up more brush and sticks for the fire before heading back towards the main camp.

OOC: There was a bit of an inconsistancy with a minor plot piece. Richard was well away from the group out in the woods gathering wood, so Annunahalion and Isildur wouldn't have been able to talk to him. I just made a minor adjustment.

Richard returned from the woods with an armfull of kindling. He dropped the pieces of wood down on the ground and reached into his bag pulling out a piece of flint. Just as he was about to start making a fire, Annunahalion approached him.

"If you want a night guard, I'll gladly stay up. Robin here has taught how to remain vigilant at night, so I would be glad to help."

"Why thank you very much for your generous offer, I was going to have everyone keep watch for a short time over the night I was going to have Ike and Hathar keep watch first," Richard said with a smile. He looked back at the woods and saw Ike come out with a load of wood. As he was about to start on the fire again, Isildur called his attention.

"Ummm..." Isildur paused as though he was afraid to speak his mind. "Richard, if Hathar is unwilling or too tired to keep watch, I could take his place... if that's okay with you."

"Are you asking if you could keep watch with Ike? If that's what you were hesistant to request, don't worry about it. You can ask anything of me and I will not judge you so quickly."

"Then it's settled. You three will make the first watch. Dan and Annahulion can make the second watch, and Mark and I can make the third watch. We can let Mvass rest his wounds without worry and anxiety."

Richard grabbed a handful of dried leaves and rubbed them up in his hand crushing them into tiny bits. He struck his flint with his dagger sending out dozens of sparks. One of the particles of leaves began to smoke. He struck the flint piece sending out another shower of fire. This time the smoking leaves began to burn. He shielded the leaves from the wind with his hand and reached for more leaves grinding those up in his hand as well. The small pile of leaves soon lit up like a torch. He threw more on ground up leaves making the fire grow. Finally a third handful had got a massive flame going strong. Within another minute he had a large fire burning hot and bright.

"Good now we can have a hot meal," Richard said rubbing his hand together.

The night was late. It seemed hours since the evening meal that they had prepared. But still Annunhalion was awake. Laying calmly at his side was Robin. As hard as he tried he could not get back to sleep. It was too hard to resist just looking at the stars and thinking. About the past, the present and of what yet might come. Alot has been forseen, but he never did trust any of that. Everyone makes their own fate.
Appart from all this, tonight didn't seem as the best night to take a careless nap. Just somethign didn't seem right tonight. Something was stirring in the air, that only few would notice.
He looked over. On the right side Richard was sound asleep. So was Mark who semmed to get taken over exhaustion as the first. Dan was snoring loudly. The only ones up was the night watch, and him. And perhaps it was better that way...

Walking around aimlessly, I noticed one man still awake. Annuhilion I believe was his name.

"You should sleep. A long, perilous journy lies ahead. There may be more monsters to slay in the morrow." I looked at him once more before continuing on my way.
