Order of course.

the heroes, Wizards in particular, like Solmyr, are

definately the best, their titans are the best long

range units in the whole dang game, and a stock pile of

naga queens can kick anyones but. Plus they have the

library upgrade that gives the mage guild extra spells.

You describe Tower in HOMM3, not Academy in HOMM4    IMO  HOMM4 towns are well balanced but my favourite one is Death - pick a Necromancer, advance him to GM Necromancy ASAP, add a Death Knight and most of neutral stacks and enemy heroes will provide you 2 or more Vampires

I like the stronghold BUT:

The necropolis is overpovered and the best town in the whole game. Many people hate that the kreegans are combinatied whit the undead. When I first saw it, I didn't like that my favorite kreegans where slaves under the undead, but then I relised that it was good.
Many people thinks that the necromancers are better than the death knigth, but I think rather different. Death knigths are good for me, (Fiona ROKS) who likes migth better than magic! Offencive tactics are brilliant and combinated whit combat (and magic resistance) the armies will be nearly impossebile to defeat.

In necropolis I choose Creberi-Venomspawn-Devils. Thats not only because I like the kreegans, but also because those units are supeiror to their undead brothers. Ghosts has many good opinions, but I perfer the crebeus multi headed atack, and you can still get ghosts whit some work on the necromancy (and in very higth numbers to)
I be slightly uncertain when I shall choise betwen the vamires and the venom spawn, because of the vampires good life drain speciality. Still, I think that the venom spawn is supeiror whit their poison (who wins nearly evry battle for me) and their 100 hp. (WOOW!!!) And if you realy work hard to you necromancy skill, you can raise them to (even if it's a bit hard on single senarios)
I am NOT uncearin whit the chooise betwen bone dragons and devils. The bone dragons fear special is good, but i't simply cannot match the devils teleport and their sumoning of ice-demons.

I don't hate necromancers, I thank them for giving my kreegan armies the death magic. When deloping a necromancer I recomend nature magic (to summon kreggans) and chaos magic (my favorite sort of magic) Nature magic is a bit hard, but it is great to have a demonologist in the army, even if nature magic is a bad magic school. If there is no perseve towns in the region, the only reason tho don't delop chaos magic is the name lich (whit I hate) of the combinated death-chaos hero. You can also try order magic, bacause that is also a very good school, even if it's not like the chaos school.

And one thing more: Galthout Half-Dead is one of my idols! (Hate that he not was in any more campaings)

Nature

Why?

Great units (except for the first level), super-strong Archers and WMD druids with summoning skill and spells. Also the legions of Water Elementals you can get through the creature portal.

Stronghold

Definetly the Stronghold. Why? Because of the Arena of Honor,Wrestling Pits,Magic Dampener, and the offensive creature.Still unclear? weeel:
Maybe that centaurs and orcs make a good pair because they're short range shooters and useless in seiges. But the centaur can fight better in melee. The berserkers have two attacks and they are recruited in large numbers. The harpies are good because of their strike-return,the nomads and fast, tough, and they have first strike, the excelent combination. The ogre mage is slow, but his bloodlust is something.but this makes the choice easier. The cyclops and his massive boulder atttack makes him a very goood rangestriker. The behemonths are tough, mean and once they embace you they crush your bones. The thunderbirds are good because of their lightning attack.

Academy. The genies are just awesome. Anyone tried to conquer an academy castle with a lot of genies and titans inside? The titans stand on one of the towers, the illusions of titans that the genies create stand on the other tower. All attackers are just slaughtered.

Haven.

I'm very much a noob to H4, and am just playing thru the small maps.  That said, in their cases I find the Haven's range superiority a great help.  Yet they have just enough quality melee (Crusaders, Squires) to protect the shooters.

I think he meant the early stages of the game, before lvl 4 units are available. Haven's Crossbowmen and Ballistae are very good shooters (both: no range penalty, Ballistae: no obstacle penalty) while Academy's Halflings are rather mediocre and IMO the only thing that saves them when not on a castle tower is Precision spell. Mages are good and Genies are great but they are spellcasters, not shooters.

I have to agree with 'classic' The human's, Heaven, haven whatever you call them, are the best. While I have some favourite creatures from the other towns (vampires, titans, those big bug things, etc), a human army protected my life magic can be particlally invincable.

Preserve, because: -you have from the beginning an archer hero, with the archery skill, so on level 3-4 you already shoot twice
-the summoning skill , of course, but it must be upgraded on first ocasion, 3 leprs a day ar crap, but 2 tigers are already quite usefull(not to mention when you manage to get elementals or mantises)
-the portal with which you can summon elementals, so nature has actually 5 creatures in the castle
-the normal creatures are quite nice also
-good spells besides summoning ones(giant/dragon strenght, wasp swarm etc)

Other castles that i like: order, haven and maybe chaos.
