Best Second level Creature...
What is your favorite Second level creature?
I like the Harpy Hags the best. They are devastating in numbers and annoy the crap out of everyone you use them against. I like to put them in the center of the battle feild so they can reach any unit. The fact that they swoop down for a quick air attack then retreat without retailiation makes this unit untouched against it's level 2 rivals. My second place goes to storm elementals(which are too powerful for level 2)

Fav: Marksmen(upgraded), Air Elemental(upgraded), Wolf Raiders(the upgraded)
Average: Gogs, gargoyles, harpy hags, dwarfs
Bad: Lizards, Zombies (huh - I'm necro - but i hate them)

i like...
... dwarves/battle dwarves best - i can´t help it - they are poor damage doers, but a great defensive unit...
...they tend to hoard up fast and are really sturdy, thus you can use them to take the enemies retaliation (which is not a big advantage with rampart, since most of their units have large hp numbers, but overall...)
...and they fit well guarding the elves; this is great, until you´re forced to attack

IMO, Storm elementals grow too slowly. I vote for Wolf riders.

Well, that would be Air/Storm Elemental hands down, except that Conflux never was, is not now, and never will be a real town.
So, the real best level 2 would be, hmmm ... Archer/Marksman. It can take out slow units like nothing at all in decent numbers, and the upgrade has 2 shots for double the fun. Great for tearing apart small stacks of wandering monsters.

Round 2, Fight !
My opinion:
Great: harpy hag, storm elemental
Good: wolf raider, marksmen,
Average: battle dwarf, obs. gargolye
Poor: gogs, lizard warrior
Suck: zombie
Lv2 is the lv that you want to upgrade ASAP in most cases, maybe except gog. Most basic lv2 creatures suck.....
Harpy hag can stand alone by its own and if u bless it, hehehe 
Storm elemental are great, though growth rate is a bit.....
but storm elemental + sprites are the mostly deadly combo of early troops in terms of nearly everything. Fast and devastating, what can u ask more ? (ooop, maybe some bikini for those sprites.  )

I'm actually fully in agreement with you on this one. Normally what I do when playing Rampart is have two armies going, one that has all of the faster units, and one that is just two big honking stacks of battle dwarves and dendroids. (the two hoard armies! Big numbers!) The dendroid binding ability helps lessen the speed disadvantage, and since they're both right 'ard, they can actually do a whole lot of damage even when attacking.

Storm is coming..
Can't pick Harpy Hags. I hate them. They look stupid as they look like turkeys which are stupid in reality.
I maybe would pick storm elementals as they are very useful in the beginning.
Second choice would be maybe Wolf Raiders. I hate them too because wolfs were taken of because of them. I loved wolves. Double attack is neat and WR can be used as shock troop.

Whenever I played with Wolf Raifers, they died very, very fast. I don't know why they are so attacked but maybe they should wait the first turn.

Have to agree with Sha_men Harpies are the best level 2 creature but on the other hand they realy suck in being what they are! LOL

Marksmen!
Sorry but I would absolutely have to say Marksmen are the best level 2 creature in the game. With their double shot ability they simply kick arse.

I think Wolf Raiders are the bet, they may be very vylnerable but with double atack special they really do a good amount of damage. Harpy Hags may be are nice but they really don't do that much damage.

The best - Storm Elemental (25 hp, range, best damage, fast - what was 3DO thinking when they made them lvl2?)
Great - Battle Dwarf (not very fast but they take punishment well), Harpy Hag (no retaliation + strike-return =  )
Worthwhile - Marksman (weak but the double shot makes them worth it), Magog (be very careful with these guys), Obsidian Gargoyle (a nice quick-striker), Lizard Warrior (a decent shooter since SoD)
Bad - Wolf Raider (too quickly wiped out)
Worst - Zombie (okay, they're tough, but they do little damage, slow as molasses, and will probably get beat in 1-on-1 with any other level 2)

Another ranking
FIRST CLASS: Harpy Hag & Storm Elemental: sometimes I recruit all of the hags from external dwellings and reserve them to middlegame, when a huge number of hags are worthwile both for decimating shooters (expert haste) and taking damage (towers, also shooters...) The AI seems to hate them... About the storm elemental, a very tough unit, as his brother of water.
SECOND CLASS: Marksmen (for early mine-taking, etc), Battle Dwarves (defensive purposes).
THIRD CLASS: Obsidian Gargoyle, Wolf Raiders, Lizard Warriors (SoD makes some justice to them). Hey!! I also miss the HOMM2 wolves a lot!! A wolf is a prideful beast: he will eat that goblin instead of allow him to ride.
FOUR CLASS: Magogs and Zombies, but zombies far worse than other 2lvl unit (if I have a lot, I use the skeleton converter on them just for making them faster). And I'm also a necro fan!!
