Best Third Level Creature...

What is your favorite third level creature?

I like the royal griffins.  Good speed and can get into combat quickly.  Their unlimited retailiation makes them very powerful in numbers.  Good unit to soak up damage in the middle of a melee.  A unit that the enemy doesn't want to hit but must take out.

Grand elf for sure, I like anything that has high numbers and can shoot, the second shot is a bonus.

Cerberus.  No retal, three-way attack, good HP and speed.  Why, they almost make Inferno decent!

Grand Elves

Grand Elves are the best in mass combat.  They are also usefull for taking mines and treasures.

....cerebrus is good for one-on-one, but when does that happen?

Fav: ELFS(upg), EVIL EYE, ORC(upg),

Average: FLY(upg), GRIFFIN, CERBERUS,

Bad: Golem, (not so bad - but... huh - at least it's cheap),
Wraith (gee - what necro I am? - this is the third unit i dislike from Necropolis - i actually like only skeletons&dread knights + some liches&vampires),
Water Elemental (not so good as Air one)

Lv 3, hmmm, let me think....

I like royal griffin. The most versatile lv 3.

Great: grand elf, cerebri, dragon fly (best scout award winner)

Good: evil eye

Average: wraith (though it will prevail in 1-on-1 fight vs any lv 3 creature), ice elemental

Poor: orc, golem

I like the Dragon Fly, they are very fast, great speed boosters in adventure map, they look weak but they are not, they have good spells like dispelling good enemy spells and casting weakness. Dragon Flies are quite usefull in later stages of the game if you use them as you should, cuz they wont die in the beggining if you use Tazar and they quickly reach great numbers.

I have no idea why, but in every batle I was in for a while, my Orc Cheiftains ended up saving my ass in some close battles. For that reason alone, I should give them the nod.

Dragon Flies, or Grand Elves.  The way I look at it, it's better to do 1 thing right than to be middle of the road in a lot of things.  The dragon flies' speed makes them invaluable, even in late game (they can normally get across the field and dispell those shield spells so that your shooter's can do more damage).  Elves may be the best shooter for the buck.  Who cares if they tend to fall down when lightly nudged?

Well ... here's what I think

I like grand elves very much ( they're one of my favourite troops) but ... how many times have u caused considerable damage to the opponent with grand elves?? Almost every time I play with Rampart they r the first troop to get bumped (either they bring a faster troop near it or Implode it or they cast a lightning). Don't get me wrong they are great against troops on the adventure map , especially grunts but on bigger battles (with yur opponent) they are a prime target and because of they're very low hit points they get whiped out really fast.

This is why my vote goes to the Cerberus because of reasons that are mentioned already.

Dragon Flyes are pretty good also but I don't see them as the best lvl3 troop.

It seems like most people like the grand elves.  I sorry I just don't see it.  It is next to impossible to keep the elves alive.  It seems like they have a bounty on their head and everyone is trying to collect.  It is hard to recall a game where you finally get a good group of elves together that they don't get decimated in battle.  I'm still stumping for the royal griffens, they have almost twice the hps as the elves and alot better defence.  Great castle invaders when you want to hit as many defenders as possible.  The cerebi are really close here, the difference between hitting multiple hexes and multiple retailiation is close(of coarse they cant attack castles well), too bad they are not in another town, maybe a dungeaon like town(one can dream), then they might have better troops to fight with.

Although...

...I do like Grand Elves best, I wouldn´t exactly call them a best lvl 3 unit - the reason is obvious: due to their low HP they get wiped away pretty fast (especially later in the game when there are more powerfull direct - damage spells) and since just everybody seems to hate their guts (as Oldtimer already said), even the stupid AI - controlled turrets prefer to shoot them over the Centauri. It is also true that there is hardly a unit I´d take rather than Grand Elves when I go flagging or picking those lvl 2 or 3 artifacts that mean so much later in the game. But, for all the reasons I previously stated, I believe that Griffins/Royal Griffins or Hell Hounds/Cerberi make the best lvl 3 unit. I might be wrong, though

Grand Elves are very good but as said they are targeted so often that they end up killed very soon. This is mainly because they are deadly because they can shoot twice but they are only ranged unit of Rampart town. They are like Imps. They shoot, they do damage and next thing...they are dead.
I have found cerberus very useful but somehow I have noticed that they are very often attacked when compared to other Inferno units. This usually means their death and just while ago I was playing a game that was going so well for my inferno. I had like over 300 cerberus and then game huge combat. He had strong forces and I used mass haste. I had chance to hit with cerberus too units and I took it. This was basically very good idea as I got lots of troops killed but it took only few secons when opponent attacked first with the small unit what was left of that second troop and then with crusaders.
End of story for cerberus.
If in that case there would have been griffin it would have only attacked one troop there but could have also given something back to his attackers. I have also had really hard time killing griffins many times and because they are produced so highly I would say they are the best third level unit.

Oldtimer:You weren't asking for the best just the ones people like most.

Most people realy like fanatsy stories eo...so elves are the logical choice.

For me tooooooooooooo...

You're ofcourse right that with many a battle its best to leave them at home since they much more easy than in those books.

The best - Ice Elemental (best damage, range troop, and durable)
Great - Royal Griffin (solid all around plus unlimited retaliation), Grand Elf (double shot but they're not too tough), Iron Golem (slow but ridiculously tough and cheap), Cerberus (tough plus no retaliation and triple attack)
Worthwhile - Evil Eye (solid range troop), Dragon Fly (blink and they're gone)
Bad - Orc Chieftain (not too durable but even they aren't very bad)
The worst - Wraith (only redeeming quality is that a bad spellcaster might get off one less spell, or that creature that deals a max 8 can't kill it by itself)

Wraith

I have to defend the wraith a bit here. I like Cerebus the most, and I think Griffon is the most versatile, but Wraiths are very good in certain situations. I like to put 7 of them on every necro scout, especially on larger maps- you would be amazed what they can do with only a little patience. You can usually kill a horde of level 1's or lot's of level 2's which aren't ranged with only 7 Wraiths. This is great on larger maps where your scouts are a week distant from resupply and you really need that gold chest or resources behind some neutral guards. Especially if your scout has magic book and bolt, you can usually just use the Wraiths and 1 or 2 bolts or a slow abd escape with 0 losses. Also since they are undead that means all the neutral creatures don't get their normal +1 morale which can screw every other level 3 you try and use like that.
