VL is definitely the best in a 1v1...but in a team battle... i think creatures like Archmagi and crusaders really shine...
people tend to forget that archmagi don't have any castle wall penalties...and the crusaders are underestimated a lot... their 2 hit is a battle winner

in low numbers - lower that 20 - Ogre is the best(if you can use them ofcourse)
between 20 -50 maybe the crusaiders have the lead(than can have advantage from the 2 hits)
after 50 vampire lords are the best because they die hardly or even none

Shooters like arc mage sucks in final battles(low hp and penalty in hand attacks)

archmages don't suffer any penalty in melee attacks...if you can surround your magi (with tactics)... you'll then see how useful they are!

Can't choose among these two:
Medusa Queen: Good shooter with ammo cart. No melee penalty. Turns her enemies into stone.
Crusader: Good statistics. Strikes twice. Tend to grow in large numbers. With Slayer spell Black Dragons are just a joke.

3.Crusaders
4.Arch Magi
5.Silver Pegasi
6.Ogre Magi
7.Horned Demons
8.Greater Basilisk
But then again i suck at Heros 3

Who is the best? Vampire Lords! Unbelievable special. I like to put counterstrike on them and just glide into the enemies troops. Devastating!

Ok, her's the three best lvl four, Arch Magi: shooting and a big advantage for spellcasting heroes.
Vampire Lords: Good speed, ok dmg, LIFE STEAL
Crusaders: a bit slower than VL, still ok, much higher dmg+double strike (morale is easily gained when castle, can get FOUR hits) and quite good.
(Pegasi): they have very high speed and magic damper, but that's all. Low hp and avarage dmg.

greater basilisks last? I would say they beat medusa queens, demons, pegasi and maybe archmagi
vampire lords are first, crusaders come close seconds.

My list:
1) Vamp Lords (they're basicly top notch level 5 unit)
2) Sharp Shooter (they beat zealots in even numbers!! and looses to dragon flies also in even numbers).
3) Arch Magi (incredible strong, only looses to silver pegasi when looking in town comparision and ignores vamp lords)
4) Medusa Queen (I never liked them, but they're actually a very capable unit, at least when I tested).
Crusaders and Horned demons are both worth mentioning for their unique role, in my opinion.
Ogre Magi and Greater Basilisk may seem like great units and they are surely a very good support to their respective towns, but they just don't have the speed I'd like. Silver Pegasi can likewise be great, but they're just not sturdy enough for me (though they easily defeat the most sturdy level 3 unit, the iron golem, in a no wait, no single unit strike, battle).

speed at level 4 :
1st : pegasi : 12
2nd : vampire : 9
3rd : archmages and basilisks : 7
5th : Demons, crusaders and medusas : 6
8th : ogres : 5
sorry, but basilisks are faster than crusaders and demons
