Arch Angles with bless and counterstrike and plus ressurection means a lot.As for me ressurection is far more usefull then -80 defense, i mean in battle vs AI or guard would you want to kill them faster with AB and lose lots of monsters or use one stack as sacrifice and then ressurect them ar end with AAs?

1. Phoenixes- inferior statically but cheap and you get 4 of them per weak, highest speed in the game and the creature of choice for Armageddon casters, also resurrects
2. Archangel- very expensive but great stats/speed and resurrection ability one of the best abilities
3. Black Dragons -Black Dragons are probably the second/third best level 7 you can get from a town only behind Archangels and the broken Phoenix. Black Dragons and Titans have a supposed "rivalry" but in reality the black dragons have always been vastly superior to titans and especially in 3 for several reasons:

1. 2 hex attack: This can obviously backfire but the net advantage of it is much higher than the disadvantage.

2. Speed and versatility- the 15 speed the dragon has allows it not only to attack first but it can attack a creature and then the next turn attack a creature all the way on the other side of the screen. The titan

3. Cost: 5000 + 2 gems is a bad price as archangels cost just 1 gem more. Some might say that in order to afford the building you have a steady income. But that extra 1000 adds up especially where the 1000 gold saved for the dungeon is 2 extra minotaurs or 5-6 harpy hags.

4. Spell Immunity: For those who say "well they can't get beneficial spells either" that's true but even taking that into account. Bless wouldn't help them that much compared to bless on the titan. There is haste, yeah but it already has decent speed. The point is not being able to buff the Black Dragons isn't a huge deal when you take into account that the other side of the buffs are the curses, and in addition there are direct damage spells. Black Dragons never have to deal with Implosion with expert earth or Armageddon.

5. Other reasons: The Dragon has an extra attack and defense point 4 more speed and it's hex size (very marginally) lets it go farther (also though makes it a bigger target). This is a small point but the Dragon does 150% of damage to Titans AND Giants whereas the Titan only does 150% to Black Dragons. Another downfall of the Titan is simply that it suffers from the distance penalty and usually only does a percentage of the damage that it is capable of. About the only thing to say about the titan is that it has a higher damage range that can be helped by bless, and mind spell immunity is useful and no hand-to-hand penalty saves it from being useless. Titans are good but I'd put them about 5th as far as level 7s. (and to be honest I would probably rather have even "worse" level 7s then them)

4. Gold Dragons -Faster and a little stronger than BDs but lose 50 hit points and are not immune to level 5 spells (notably implosion)
5. Titans- discussed
6. Arch Devils- Have very good stats and they do increase life expectancy with no retaliation but are expensive and the 200 health really cripples how nasty they can be. That said wait attack retreat strategies make this unit capable of beating slow creatures no matter what size of army they have.
7. Ancient Behemoths- a very underestimated creature whose speed and defense hurt it, but it's health is very good, it's cost is low and its attack is almost irrelevant because of it's amazing special ability to ignore 80% of the creature's defense.

(big gap)

8. Chaos Hydra- were getting to the "not-so good" critters. Price is average. Health could be higher but speed really hurts the Hydra alot. The Chaos Hydra is at his/her/it's best when fighting neutral stacks with a hero who has good buffing spells like haste bless and teleport. Teleport is almost a must when sieging castles.
9. Ghost Dragons- are very cheap to their credit, but just don't last. Their special to reduced hit points by half is very good but your playing with a 20% chance. One advantage they have is since you know they are going to die rapidly you can attack the strongest stack and hope to age it.

Well, I will not say that BDs are better than AAs straight away, but the 2-hex attack of BDs is a very good plus. Where is this useful? If you get into a battle which is very hard to win (i.e. you have inferior troops) they do the most atrition damage if you can make the battle longer by using strategic spells. You attack weak creature stacks just behind strong ones and hence get no retaliation while using your arguably strongest attacker.

On the other hand, for small skirmishes AAs are certainly better since they can resurrect your damaged troops. Particularly your shooters who get shot during sieges where the garrison is negligible but the towers kil your precious zealots/marksmen.

What I would like to mention here is introducing a new competitor to the discussion. I think Black Knights/Dread Knights are the de facto 7th level creature of the Necropolis as opposed to Ghost Dragons. Taking into account the growth rate of DKs, I would argue that they are at least at par with other 7th level creatures, if not surpassing them. And the double damage - if you are playing against a human player, it doesn't only hurt much, but also lowers the morale of your opponent significantly; truly a formidable tool of psychological warfare.

While it is true that for most casual players, and maybe even for some diehard Necropolitans, the Dread Knight is favored over the Ghost Dragon, I also find that when playing a human opponent, they often make them a priority above the Ghost Dragon, because they're sometimes a larger threat. If anything, Necropolis basically has 2 Tier 6.5 units, which hurts it rather than aids it because of the fixed creature growth. The 1/2 extra Dread Knight(s), in my opinion, don't make up for the Ghost Dragon's lack of extraspecial usefulness. Aging is handy indeed, but their own HP aren't to write home about for starters. They're dangerous, but not because of their mere presence, as with some other Tier 7 units. A lot of luck is required, and more than I feel comfortable with at most points.

However the Dreaders basically have twice the status-impact possibility with Curse and Double Damage, both protecting their own HP on retaliation and cutting down a greater number of units which basically does the same thing, 120 HP (Great for a Tier 6 unit) is still a little icky since they have to make up the Ghosties' flaws and just might be your last stack standing in a large battle (should your Vampire Lords get raped). In comparison, Champions have 100 HP and they don't need to cover for Archangels, and Naga Queens with 110 HP are in way better company with Titans as support.

As far as Tier 6 units go, Dreaders get my vote every time, but if we're talking global battles, I feel they spend too much time cutting down leftovers from the Ghost Dragons' attacks. It's sad that the only true flaw a great Tier 6 has is the relative incompetence of their associated Tier 7. It's a slim line, which could've easily been fixed with an in-town growth enhancement for the Dreaders, especially when you're first going into that Tier, and which would've made the Necros a better faction instantly, but as it stands my vote goes to the wizards of the Tower, which is a shame.

For me:

The worst is Ghost Dragon. Of course it has chance to age enemy, but it is too slow and too weak.

The best are:

1st is Phoenix (not with Armageddon but, what is more likely to do, with mass slow) - with this combination you can beat even much stronger opponent.

2nd is Ancient Behemoth because of its 80% def reducing and 300HP. One bad thing - can't fly.

3rd is Black Dragon - spell immunity, 300HP, quite fast, breath attack.

Titans. They're ranged and no melee penalty. 40-60 damage and totally decent stats; more capable in most situations, especially when defending (if you don't got arch devil or such and zerk-spell).

My favorite are Ancient Behemoths.

Their cheap price, fast availability and the ability to HURT anything are too much for me to resist.

It's only my opinion, tough. As it was said, the best 7th creature is the one you like most. As long as that creature is not a Bone Dragon, that is.

Regarding the "complaints" on the titan price earlier in the thread (yeah like 4 years ago i just noticed) i think less than 5k and 2 gems is too cheap for such an awesome unit, despite the speed. If you wanna go first with your Tower-units, just get 1 arch devil in the army instead of those rather snowty cannon fodder gargyoles and there you go

Phoenix indeed. You get 4 of them per week instead of 2. And 2 phoenixes is cheaper, faster, and stronger than any other level 7 creature.

About titans: What a shame! such powerful units as ranged cowards. I don't like them, because if the enemy is out of range, they will do half damage.

Oh, by the way, we can't use ranged units as melee units in hand to hand combat, can we?

Titans have No Melee penalty = doing same damage as when they're ranged

Btw, when they're melee, they will do ZERO Damage when the enemy is out of range

I mean, i want them to move forward in the battlefield, while fighting.

For isntance an enemy is 7 hex far from my titan. I want my titan to attack the enemy as a hand-to-hand unit, so my titan terrorizes the battlefield from the center of it. But it is not possible. The titan has to strike that unit with his lightning bolt. That makes the titan less effective.

That doesn't make any sense, since there will be plenty of times that the titan will have full damage when a creature is 7 H away.
