SKILLS NOT BALANCED!!!

Quote:
Lord_pc, you're absolutely true.

This Absolute Charge ability is the utmost ability for knights in the game (as you can see, each race has its own), and requires a high level hero to get it.
This way, you can build your hero even at the end of XL maps and big campaign.
Obviously, don't count on getting it on a typical multiplayer map.

There is absolutely no way to get ABSOLUTE CHARGE with all Haven characters as they start out with there own abilities which eat into the abilities you need to get that skill.  Every character, I mean everyone has abilities.  Only a handful can actually attain this ability.  Also, when you level up you can not even see what you had taken previously.  I am new to the game and I find this frustrating as I do not want to go outside the game to have to figure out what I want to take next to keep it inline with something that is in the game, make it easier.

To me it is very unimportant to get ultimate abilities.  It's really just a gimmick.  Especially since as you say, some heroes simply can not achieve it.

The tribes of the east expansion will supposedly add a way to remove skills allowing any hero a shot at it.

In the meantime you may be interested in this:

Celestial Heavens mod

It is a mod that changes around skills (perhaps more than I'd like) which I haven't tried.  Apparently it includes a readme so you can judge if it is desirable.

I know there were other mods that changed the path to get the ultimate on the CH website, but they may not be applicable to 1.5.

Pheonix,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I hate complaining but it seems to me there are many flaws with HoMM 5 and HoF, I just started playing the game and the things I see are unbalanced for game play.

Things like the AI being able to develop a large army, get defeated and return in less than 5 turns with an army of equal or greater size, I can not replenish my army that quickly I do not see how it can.

Strange things are afoot in HoMM

Post your thoughts and opinions here

But the Ultimate skills are unattainable, most heroes have starting skills and deter you from getting ultimate skills.  Haven Knight Unstoppable charge would be 1 example.

Phoenix,

I downloaded this mod and extracted the files, but they are not .pak or h5m files, it is a whole bunch of folders, there are no instructions either, any ideas?

I have played this game since it came out. I havent got any ultimate skill so far and im happy with it. My advise for you is not to trouble with it because theyre neither good choice nor needed to win games.

When you play a scenario your opponent has normal growth. In campaign however AI can do that kind of tricks.

I just dont understand how the AI and build more rapidly than I can, I mean it does not bother me the campaign mission takes longer and I get experience for it, just doesnt seem right.

It's not Ai tricks or whatever, it's pre-set scripts, designed to keep the map a challenge.

I used to hate that thing, facing a fully built town(mage guild 5 too) and all units bought and upgraded before month 2. Not because I could not win but because it's unnatural. I guess I prefer to have the challenge but it does not make a game as interesting as in h3. I prefer exploration instead of blind rushing though I enjoy it on occasion. Heh I used to play small maps with 8 players, no underground and islands on H3 hotseat. Not the same thing as a large map with 4 players and artifacts but it's a different experience. H5 managed to make most maps have this feeling though..

Elvin,

What about ultimate abilities?  Is that going to be fixed in Tribes?  I mean with most characters starting out with certain abilities it is almost impossible to get ultimate skills.  Also, you can not see what you have picked when you level up making it even hard to choose your next skill to align it with your abilities, hope that makes sense, you seem to be an avid poster with alot of knowledge so I thought you might know.

Thanks

I know that in TotE there are 3 skill paths(say attack/leadership/light for haven) instead of the now 4 so they will be much easier to get. I don't know if you will be able to see what you have on lvl ups or if there has been a rebalancing in their power. I sure hope there is because they should easily be accessible in a large map. Also I have no idea if the starting heroes skills have been changed to help with getting the ultimate.

Well AOH no longer has the regular heroes (only campaign) up on their informative pages so I can't check the starting skills for knights but surely there are at least a couple of heroes.

I look here:

interactive skill wheel

clicking on the center for the knight shows all the skills required to reach the ultimate.

If I remember right there is a knight who starts with light magic and one that starts with logistics, so unless the starting secondary sub skill conflicts it should be possible.

It only takes four skill paths so even if the knight starts with one wrong skill it should be theoretically possible to get the ultimate (though I still don't think it's desirable).

There was a thread that had all the specifics on which heroes could and could not do it but I searched and could not dig it up.

Actually, all heroes are there: the "Campaign Hero" tags are incorrectly added to every hero. I'll fix that, thanks for pointing out.

Perhaps I forget how it works but I looked through all the normal haven heroes since sfidanza points out they are actually there.  I only found one Maeve, who is excluded from the ultimate because she has two starting skills (besides counterstrike) and neither are appropriate.

I also took a look at the skills mod on CH.  To me it is an .h5m and should go in the maps folder.  There is also a readme.  I'm using winrar to extract.

I never really bothered with the ultimate skills because they restrict you so heavily, partly with crappy skills in the mix (like a tendency to weird Enlightenment skills like Dark Revelation. Cool, I get another levelup to compensate the one I just wasted!). And most of them seem to be pretty worthless.

Triple damage on Retaliation strike? I used that skill like twice so far...
Double damage on Elemental Chains? Nice, but chains don't deal the big damage for Warlocks. Empowered spells and Warlocks Luck do.
Always lucky attacks? Sounds fun, but with +3 base luck and some more from artifacts, you already have like 50% chance for a lucky strike anyway. Still, probably one of the most powerful ultimates.
Instant Gating? You don't lose that much time with Swift Gating in the first place.
Howl of Terror sounds nasty... -6 morale more or less completely freezes enemy armies without Leadership. Plus most of the skills leading there are actually quite nice, so I've been aiming for that one with my necro heroes recently, but I always needed a few more levels.
Arcane Omnsience sounds powerful, but... who uses all schools of magic at once?
Absolute Protection is very situational. More or less useless against anyone without Luck skill, and it doesn't even seem to affect Warlords Luck. Would probably do way to piss off a Sylvan Hero with Absolute Luck, though ^^.

Still if you use it on a massive paladin stack that the enemy units MUST attack it's gonna hurt. But it doesn't hurt ranged and spell attacks

Right but that's true for early. Later the damage can be pretty substancial.

LOL!

2nd LOL!

In a battle I have used over 10 spells and not for the fun of it. It can really help with big armies.

Absolute Protection is very situational.
3rd LOL!

In case you are wondering why I find some things funny. Always luck or always half damage can be game breaking. Especially on a faction that uses avenger and another that specializes in defense respectively.. As for instant gating that's an instant +50-100% army and automatic shooter blocking. That's downright terrifying.
The rest of the ultimates can't even touch them, maybe ultimate terror.

Can someone share a story, during H5 or HoF campaign, which Hero you built up to Ultimate skill? Even in campaign, I experienced that was really utopia.

These are that I recall:
Agrael: shortlived
Findan: can't, already had Tactics
Zehir: couldn't get Attack

My best shot was actually Wulfstan, small chance to get Logistics but already equipped with it, but he reached only level 25+ something before the game ended.

If it's a single scenario, the map will have to be XL with underground to get it. So aside from its usefulness, is it really utopia?
