Hmmm, you know, the ability that replaced Twilight in the Urgash's Call tree was borrowed from a different class it was more in flavour with. Is it possible that skill could be replaced with something more...Inferno-y at some point? I had an idea, if no one else did.

Quickening Feast (Dark Magic)
Requires: Consume Corpse
Contributes to: Urgash's Call

When the hero uses the Consume Corpse skill, there is a chance he or she may immediately cast a spell afterwards.

Say, maybe 40% chance, +10% per level of Luck (up to 70%). If it doesn't seem too powerful, up it to 100% and remove "there is a chance" from the description. Even with the exploding corpses ability, I very rarely ever used Consume Corpse simply because by taking a turn to not cast a spell I was probably costing myself some troops. I hate taking losses, *especially* as Inferno.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I found that Consume Corpse is mostly useful when your HellFire ability does more damage than your hero by itself (HellFire is the bonus fire damage added to your troops' damage). It costs mana, and thus doesn't trigger when you're out of it.
If you have seven stacks, and each can deal, say 90 more damage through HellFire, even if they are 2 imps, that's useful. Add to that gated troops and phantom forces...

Sfidanza, do you have any idea about how the damage from Hellfire is calculated? You seem to think it's a good ability, in my experience it was useless so i avoid it... But i'm always on the lookout for new strategies =)
Same for skills like Mark of the Damned or Retaliation Strike. Is it useful in other situations than against/with Griffins or Golems?

The point wasn't the Consume Corpse was useless (later in the game, you can spend a combat turn to get 20+ mana, which can certainly beat out spending a whole map turn using Dark Ritual), it was that Dark Renewal doesn't really fit the Inferno faction. The skill I suggested just made CC a bit more useful, but really any other more Inferno-ish skill would do.

Hellfire isn't bad, especially when in my campaign Agrael's Succubus Mistresses and their "chain lightning attack" triggered Hellfire...

I don't know, hellfire damage didn't seem to scale down for every creature hit...

HellFire has a 30% chance to trigger.
Bonus damage is 50 + 5*SpellPower (or 45 + 5*SP, not sure)
It uses 5 mana.

If you have 7 stacks, and ignoring the initiative differences for simplicity sake, it means you would make a
7*0.3*(50+5*SP) = 105 + 10.5*SP damage per turn (not counting your hero action).
Not bad.

Also, Consume Corpse retores 1 mana per 30HP in the dead stack.

@FlawedParadigm: I agree with you. I just took the opportunity to react on Comsume Corpse.

I am beginning to think I will never understand this skill set, I am just now playing the Heroes venue as a newcomer.
In trying to get Unstoppable charge on Isabela, just so that I can follow the games intention, I find that in following the tree, the four options that come up do not allow me to pick one of the things that I should be getting next. I would love to know what I am doing wrong. I have read and reread the notes here sorry if I missed this elsewhere but I did look first.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

I am afraid you are doing nothing wrong. As many people have complained, the requirements for the ultimate skills are simply so many that it is virtually impossible to ever achieve it without an incredible amount of planning and also a good amount of luck.

Well, in the Inferno campaign, i have been able to get the ability i wanted at every single level-up. It was the first time i went for an ultimate, and i was surprisingly easy to get.

I think that the ultimate skills do require planning- so here's what I do:
1. write down the original skill/ability pair needed for that particular skill e.g. Logistics/Pathfinding
2.Attempt to get expert on all skills before moving on to abilities (it's ok if you go on a couple abilities- if you do I suggest the race-specific ones)
3.Get the one ability that you need for each skill
4.Use the tip to find out which ones you need for the ultimate- e.g. Swift gating- Requires Pathfinding. It will say an ability as opposed to a skill.
5.DON'T GET DISTRACTED! IT is nearly impossible to get back on the correct road if you get a wrong skill or ability.

Addmcmuffin2 I really really appreciate your advice, and have done my utmost to implement it. The bad news is I still can't seem to follow the tree. Since the last posting I have started over at least twenty times trying to follow it and still come up short.
I thought to document both my thinking and what I am experiancing in game play.
ok...Isabel starts at level 1 with Advanced Leadership (makes sense she's the queen) and Basic Counterstrike.

As I understand it I only get a total of 20 choices before she maxes out.

The skills I need to take are.....from these I need these abilities

Basic Light Magic              Master of Blessings
                              Guardian Angel
                              Refined Mana

Basic Luck                     Resourcefulness
                              Tear of Asha Vision
                              Spoils of War

Basic Logistics                Pathfinding
                              Familar Ground
                              Death March

Basic  Enlightenment           Scholar
                              Graduate
                              Wizard's Reward

From the training she already has I need to get
                              Benediction
                              Retalitory strike.
                              Expert Trainer
Getting all these should let me take Unstoppable charge
I think I am ok up to this point but that does account for all 20 options.

Ok so much for theory.
Put into practice this is an example of what I encountered.

Level 2 I was allowed to select from

Basic Luck                     Diplomacy
Advanced Counterstrike         Recruitment

I chose Luck so far no so good.

Level 3
Basic Logistics                Expert Trainer
Expert Leadership              Soldier's Luck

I opted for logistics I now have two of the four skills that I need.

Level 4
I get offered...

Basic Dark Magic              Navigation
Expert Leadership             Scouting

The problem with choosing any of them is that now it becomes impossible to get to the end goal

This is one actual example of what I have been encountering and I clearly don't understand what I did wrong.

If anyone can tell me I'd be most grateful. thanks in advance
and thank you for taking the time to read sift through this post

sunbreak,

you aren't doing anything wrong.  you are running into one of the major complaints concerning getting ultimate skills. that more often then not, you are faced with 4 options that don't advance you down the right path.

in the sequence you outlined, all you can do is pick a throw away category.  you need 5 skills and various abilities under those skills.  so you have 1 extra skill that you can try to use when the other options are not the ones you need.

of course, that burns one (or more) of your level up opportunities.  so if the level cap isn't high enough, then you may not be able to reach your ultimate skill unless you get lucky with a witches hut or two.

as most ultimate skills already involve having to take "weaker" skills that you probably wouldn't take, I really believe that you should not be further penalized by being blocked out because of bad luck on the 4 options you are given.

Thanks so much Kendo!
I have been through that beginning scenario so many times that I know the hundred plus farmers on a first name basis! I was convinced that I was just missing something. I am in full agreement that this is unfair. You should be able to opt from whatever is available to you not limited to the four choices.
But that being said...its about the only part of this game that I don't care for.

Couldn't you just choose Expert Leadership and see what future would bring you? I know Expert Leadership wouldn't help you towards Unstoppable Charge, but since your 6th skill slot was already taken by Leadership, it wouldn't harm you either?

I am probably not posting this in the right place, but since I am not at all sure where that would be, let me try here and see how it goes.
I asked for and got lots of feedback regarding the aquisition of "unstoppable charge". Ok I have the principal of that down now however in playing through the campaigns the Isabel that you develop early is the one you play again in the necromancer campaign.
To this point I have been unable to develop a queen sufficient to hold her own against the academy with all the strikes against her that you encounter in that campaign. She was gimped the first time I got there and never having gotten the skill unstoppable charge, but rather the lesser ones that lead to it, she is gimped when I tried to play it again.
Can someone point me in the right direction of what to develop in order to finish out these campaigns?
Thanks in advance

Why would you get Expert on all skills first?  Those are your only buffers.  If you don't get offered two abilities that are needed, you can always go back to your skills and race-specific abilities.  I would leave at least half of them on Advanced while you get your third-tier abilities for the other three.
