(Let's try this again)Will the Sorceress return?

Hopefully, this topic won't go into. . .different. . .topics.

Now then. Who misses the Sorceress? And if she were to return, how many of her units would she get back?

Fresh Start

1) WHO WAS THE SORCERESS, AGAIN ?

Here is a detailed summary of the Sorceress town type as it existed in Homm2 :

The Creatures :

lvl 1 : sprites
lvl 2 : dwarves (upgradable to battle dwarves)
lvl 3 : elves (upgradable to grand elves)
lvl 4 : druids (upgradable to greater druids)
lvl 5 : unicorns
lvl 6 : phoenixes

The Phoenixes of Homm2 had little in common with the overpowered upgraded lvl 7 creatures of Homm3's Flux. They could fly and were the fastest unit in the game, guaranting the initiative to the Sorceress. That's about it (except the name of course ).

Unlike most of Homm2's lvl 6, they weren't upgradable, making the Sorceress indeed much more at ease in the early to mid-game stages. Confronted to Black Dragons (2 upgrades to get), they were of course in trouble. But, IMHO, they had very little to fear from Green Dragons (or even Reds, if played correctly).

The Greater Druids were among the very best shooters you could get in Homm2 : very fast, suffering no melee penalty and inflicting impressive damage to whoever challenged them.

The other 4 creatures were pretty much the same as they remained in Homm3, with only slight differences.

The Heroines

They started with Advanced Navigation and Basic Wisdom. Their starting stats were 0-0-2-3 and they were more likely than any other type to get advancement in Knowledge. Then Spell Power, then Att and Def (equal chances to get advancement in those 2 skills). They came up with a spellbook with the Bless spell for free.

The Overall Strategy

Blazing Speed is what playing the Sorceress was all about !

Her troops may not have been quite as sturdy as the Knight's or the Barbarian's, but by the time their tough walkers had their chance to even move, their numbers were most often already halved by the wonderful work of the Sorceress' "2 nasty shooters and Phoenixes combo" !

2) HOW DID THE SORCERESS DISAPPEAR ?

Truth be said, the Sorceress fans were by far the ones who encountered the worst difficulties switching to Homm3.

For those who used to play Knight, Barbarian or Necro in the old days, it was a piece of cake to adopt Homm3. The bargain was, like : "Okay, you get to keep the name along with 99% of the cool aspects of your favorite town type AND here's a magic box full with tons of super bonuses to boot !"

For Wizard and Warlock followers, it took a little while getting used to. Their favorite town types had been renamed and modified quite a bit, but at least they still existed ! Tower and Dungeon arguably made more than suitable replacements for them.

For Sorceress lovers, it was another story altogether ! The heroines (as a hero class) had been completely banned from the game. The druids (as creatures), killed. Three of the creatures (elves, dwarves and unicorns) still stood together behind the Rampart. Too bad only one out of those 3 was taken from the top-3 of the old Sorceress' creatures... (and yet, the elves were only n°3 back then ! ) Even worse, the so-called heir to our old favorite alignment lost initiative to several other towns : Castle, Inferno and of course the invincible Flux. Besides, unless they leave them at home, their 2 super slow stacks give them a really low number of movement tiles when transporting full army. Which makes quite a major difference with the Sorceress, whose troops were the fastest !

They arguably tried to fix that when they incorporated both phoenixes and sprites to the then all-new Flux town later on... But apart from the guarantee to get the initiative in combat, the Flux has very little in common with the Sorceress, IMHO !

3) DO YOU MISS THE SORCERESS ?

It wouldn't do her justice to just say "I miss the Sorceress". It's still by far my all-time favorite town type ! It broke my heart when they dismissed her from Homm3 !

4) WILL THE SORCERESS EVER RETURN ?

No matter how much I want the Sorceress to return, I seriously doubt it's very likely.

Most Homm2 players I ever known used to laugh at her, either because they mistakenly assumed it was "the weakest town type" or (even worse) simply because it was a feminine town type.

A notable example of that way of thinking can be seen here.

While describing the then new Rampart town type, the author felt the urge to discriminate the Sorceress in comparison :
Quote:
The rampart is what remains of the old sorceress' town. However, it is one of the strongest town types in the game, and its ancestry should not fool you into underestimating this town.
This site's reviews and tips are otherwise excellent, don't get me wrong. It's just a good illustration of just how bad the Sorceress has been more often than not underrated, IMHO.

Greetings to all other Sorceress fans. Legend.

I don't think the Sorceress will return either, but we can always hope, can't we.

Edit: This is also a thread where you talk anything about the Sorceress as well.

I'm also making a fan town for Heroes 3 where the Sorceress is the magic hero. . . It just won't be the same though. . .
