Gunrunner: i believe that the "tunnels of light" that people experience when they have a near death experience is actually caused by the lack of oxygen and return of oxygen to the brain and the optic nerve firing up transmitters again. The fact that so many people experience this is the weakness of the theory that its a tunnel of light representing a way to heaven or something similar.

Philosophy deals with these things quite heavily and although I havent delved too deep i did a short stink at uni and did a few philosophy subjects and one of them dealt with the human mind and theories on what makes us "us". Did we have a soul and there is this whole "brain in the vat" theory thats really cool, suggesting that everything around us is merely an illusion conjured by our brains...

But answering the question, yes i believe in life after death, both my mother and I have had quite a few "spiritual" experiences suggesting past lives and the age of our souls, as compared to physical age. Of course I cannot prove this, and Im not particularly afraid of there being nothing after death, as long as i live my life to the full, then there is nothing to fear .... but perhaps peace?

Its something that has been debated for centuries and when it comes down to it, no one is right and no one theory is wrong, perhaps science will disprove more in the future, but for now we wont know!

No one alive has returned so far to tell... this is why I'm rather sceptic.

Of course, there comes a question: do you REALLY want to have an afterlife? I think of death as rest. Being refused it kinda hurts.

my beliefs on afterlife and resurrection...

I've heard all these theories before ... I was a philosophy minor

but these are my opinions from my experiences:

When my mother got me into trying out yoga, it was a pretty cool (and hard-to-describe) experience.
What fascinated me about it was the shakra or spiritual energy places in our body.

Now you may ask, "what the hell does this have to do with an afterlife?" ... well, it's from this when I could actually FEEL my own spirit, and the energy it gives outside my body.
From this experience, I know that a spirit exists inside me (and everyone else too).
Therefore I ask, do our spirits die?  who knows?  but I've heard TONS of ghost stories ... not just from strangers but from my friends as well.
Therefore I am led to believe that our spirits still exist after death, and who knows how long they stick around... eternity? <-- I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, there's my expert opinion above ... below is my not-so-expert opinion:

I am a Christian.  I personally know that Christ existed, and truly believe that he lives today.  <-- How so? Resurrection.
Anyway, I'll avoid the preaching and stick to the facts/ records:
there exist 4 historical records besides the Bible (from ancient Europe) which mention Christ in Judea: Josephus, Eusebius, and I can't remember the other two
I believe the Bible to be correct so far as it was translated correctly.
Anyway, why did I bring up all this? Because there are parts in the Bible where Paul preaches about the resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians chapter 15)... not just Christ's resurrection, but the resurrection of all mankind.
If this is true then we will all be resurrected through Christ's power, and we'll all live to see it happen.

My friend who is Mormon tells me of some other fascinating things:  (and I used to think the Mormons were weird until I found out he was one)
there exists a record written by the ancestors of the american-indians ... before Columbus came.  This history book spans from 600bc - 400ad, and it talks about MANY of the events that occur in the Bible.  (like the star at Christs birth) <-- this really surprised me to find out.
anyway, according to this record, it gives an account of Jesus coming from the sky to them ... after his resurrection (34ad)!
All I could say was: "damn!  so there's TWO records of Christ's resurrection??"

but then again, it kinda makes sense when I study ancient american-indian religious beliefs ... like when they thought Cortez was the great white god they were waiting for to return (and of course, they gave him ALL their gold) ... Or when they talk about the day when there was no darkness (the north star)...

Yes, history is interesting ... I escpecially find an interest in Christian history, and have studied it much so far.  My friend is also telling me about Mormon history ... and I am AMAZED as to how many misunderstandings there are about this Christian religion.  <-- (I never thought they were Christian before, nor would've guessed).  There exist people who, even today, think they have horns (like demons) ... and I've met these people too.

Perception is quite subjective, my friend. When you have hallucination you are SURE it all is true, don't you. Same thing with feeling your spirit. Prove you have a spirit by mean of proof I can't reject and I will admit there's an afterlife.

it is common for the blind to assume that others see nothing ... therefore, I suppose the only way I could prove it would be to show you myself ... but I couldn't do that here (obviously).

To say that perceptions are subjective, is to also say that one's empirical sense data is also subjective.  If such is the case, then all our experiences are subjective, because it is our sense data that makes up our experience.
If our experience is only a product of hallucinations, then I suppose we'd all be wrong

However you are correct, if I was hallucinating, then I could not know that I was hallucinating, and therefore my experience would be false... then again, if I cannot trust my empirical sense data, what can I trust?

It's all a matter of definition. Well, let me tell you that I DID think there was life after death. But I changed my mind. I opened my eyes. ;-)

change your mind?  is that your proof?

when you opened your eyes, what did you see?

I never stated that I could prove such a thing as an afterlife, I only stated my premises (experience) which determines my conclusion (knowledge).  It is my expert opinion only because I have the experience to back it up.

as for proving that one has a spirit, would be difficult, and could not be done with words.

To prove anything about the afterlife without being IN the afterlife, would be practically impossible (from my philosophical experience), but if you can do it, I'd like to see

i do not belive in anything else than biological (chemical) detiorating when you die. a body is like a machine. when it stops functioning it dies. people belive in spirits because everyone grieves for a after-life or eternal living.
and hexa. you say that the fact that he is 17 might explain some of his thinking? but you dont, not for one seckond stop and think that maybe he might be right (i forgot the name, sorry)

Death/Duath

Will be the same experiment then when you was not born yet.
Did you remember the time before you were born?
NO!
You weren't a chicken
You weren't a cow
you weren't grass
you wéren't a rich king

You were nothing!(yeah maybe a little cell) But nothing more!

Also life after death(In heaven or hell) is nonsence(Atleast that are my 2 cent). And only is told because it lighten the pain of loosing somebody. But this person will find eternal rest.. But not in those two silly made up places.

I also can't believe people believe in a god or even in the devil.
(They must think for their own. And they have the right to think what they want) But i'm not one of them.

But everybody his own believe. And I respect it all.
But I just don't place myself among them.
And maybe I will believe some day aswel. But then there have to be some prove. All I see is death and war. and no wonder at all.(however life already is a wonder )

BtW:I also don't care about the evolution story.

life after death...

...absolutely, I think.

Why?  I'm a Bible believer.

Does it affect the way I live?  you bet yer butts.

If you're livin' like there is no God... hoo boy, you better hope you're right!  As for me... even if I am/were wrong, I would not be disappointed with the way I've lived my life, because I will have followed what I believe in.  Say, if you want, that God is a man-made concept (I personally don't think so because humans *universally* have a deep spiritual nature and a longing to be connected with something larger than themselves).  Say, if you want, that I've been duped by Religion, the Opiate of the Masses.  You're entitled to that opinion.  But I am *happy* with my life and my belief in an afterlife.

And isn't that what it really comes down to anyway, for those of you who don't think that there is life after death?

Here are mine 2 cents:
  - If I'll stay with my memory I'll remember my death for eternety, what's the fun in that? Even the best place won't relese me from the thoughts of it. Also I'll keep constantly thinking about my relatives and friend, not such a bright thoughs when you're dead. Therefore, I don't want to remember it. That refers to Heaven/Hell, A wandering ghost.

  - Reincarnating: Ok, this way of afterdeath life won't leave me the pain of remembering my death, along with my other memories, then I'm not myself as I am today. I won't rememeber my previous life (lives), therefore I won't have my Experience, memories, feelings, knowlege. That means I'm not myself again.

   - No life after death: for the present me there won't be any diffence between Reincarnating and this one, in both there won't be anything left from me.

Hmmm I for one don’t think that we can think of afterlife/heaven/hell/reincarnation and so on with our human perspectives and dimensions.

Take time for instance. I for one don’t think that time is a constant variable .. we just perceive it that way. So why (assuming that there is an afterlife) would time move proportionally? Perhaps a human’s life time can be over in a blink…

And how can we (rational people) explain thing like regression therapies?
Of course there are a lot of fakers out there (I mean … we can’t all have been Napoleon Bonaparte in our previous life).

Or how about the unused part of our brains…there must be so much more on a physical plane….so why not an immortal soul?

Hmmm … please give me your input!@
