Pity the newbie . . .

How many newbies that come to this site actually stay here?  I see a few newbies every few threads or so, but then they disappear.  Some even come and post a few threads hoping for some replies (obviously people who seem to like the board) and then we either complain at the number or point out that it has already been covered.

I, myself, have done this.  I was one of the most vocal when Death started his neverending polls.

However, when I first came, I did the same thing.  I posted about 2-3 threads, hoping for some replies, and got none.  I was disappointed, and almost never returned.  If it wasn't for Heroes 4, I probably wouldn't have come back!

The point is, I think we are chasing away the newbies/Tavern Dwellers.  I have some ideas how we can keep them, or atleast not chase them down and flame them until they cry to their parents at the dinner table (okay, slight exageration!)

1)  When a newbie does post, reply to it.  Don't let it linger in limbo hoping that someone you know replies to it, so you can join in.

2)  If a newbie does post something that has been covered, don't burn him for being ignorant, post on it!!!  I am sure that there are a lot of people that never had a chance to post on this issue the first time, and would like to.  Whatever you do, don't try to shut the thread down.  That is very unhelpful and mean.

3)  Don't reply to threads with excesive cussing, bashing, or threads that are complete nonsense and out of the right area.  We don't need those people.

Honestly, if it wasn't for TOH, I wonder where we'd get half of the fresh blood.

Wow, that sorta sounds like one of those 'save the children' comercials, doesn't it?

That's good proposition, but one can decide what is the right thing to do for himself. There is FAQ already, and all is written there.

It's up to people whether they should reply to anyone's thread or not. As people already knew that once they reply - the thread goes to top (not all boards are like this) - so they knew that doing that they will make the topic hot.

Saying that you don't need people who post or answer bad threads, means - that you want here people only like you - with your tastes. Why - because only people like you will think the same way as you - that BAD thread for them is BAD for you and GOOD thread for them is GOOD for you. Those people in general are YOU! Capiche?

cheerz,
malkia

What?!

My sarcastameter doesn't work on the net, so I'll have to assume you really mean that Malkia.

I said don't reply to threads with constant cussing or bashing.

Even if those threads can be considered good because I think they are bad, I thin Val would appreciate keeping the threads clean.  Responding to those will only keep them coming, because they obviously want attetion.

How many people read the FAQ??  If more did, less people would ask how to do smileys or post pictures.

Sound idea , Paul ..how about leading the way?

As your old signature said "I'm not attacking you, I'm just stating my opinion."

Over on the Altar, you've used the exact same post on a couple of different threads to jump on a "newbie" for posting in the wrong forum. Said post was abrupt, and bordered on outright rudeness.

It doesn't take any more time to be polite about it, and quietly email or IM a mod asking that the thread be moved. That's part of what the Mod Squad is there for. In the long run, being polite when pointing out a new poster's error will go a long way toward encouraging them to stay around, and keep threads from sliding into insults, flames, and profanity.

After all, without new blood, every community stagnates. You seem to be asking that we give new posters a chance, and even encourage them to develop their ideas. I'm more than amenable to this. I'm just asking that you practice what you preach, no matter how justifiable your frustration is.

I agree with Haak!

You don't have to spam their thread just because of simple mistake the did! It isn't polite, then you're telling us now to be pitty with newbies? You don't seem to know what you're talking about!

I have to apologize to LordPaul, Sometimes i'm not translating the well things - and saying things too hasty. The way I was thinking about (3.) is that you mean - posting bad or good at general. But then i read it again - it's not about it mainly - you were talkin' about spams - which is in the net considered bad, thus in real life we often use them just to make the time to pass off - or when we are out of words

Well,im sure there is "newbies" coming here knowing more about the game than some of the well-known posters.I wont name anyone but there is some guys stuck with their ideas "which isnt always bad" but wont listen to others ideas.

On the other hand, there is very good guys trying to help or give more infos when they have them.

Its not tough to be nice with others, but some morons put efforts to act like f***ers.

Dont feel like replying, dont do it.When you do it,repect the other members.

Of course if someone is snowing against you,use all the possible words  with "uck" in it,way better than just ignoring.

Dont try to be nice only with newbies, but with every members respecting you.95% of the net "cool jerks" dont have the balls to say what they think in real life.I dont respect them,do it if you want.

So far i have a mixed idea about these boards. At least two of those morons got banned, guess i'll stay a bit more.

PS:If you think i wrote anything refering to you, you're wrong.I just talk about my experinces on different boards. This one is very nice, not much trouble makers around. But i felt like sharing with ya'll

Alter of Wishes

When I was posting on those threads in the Alter, I didn't check to see if they were newbies.  I was just tired of the Tavern becoming the Wasteland we've been hearing about.  I did a quick scan of the threads that didn't belong, made sure I was right, cut/paste/post, and point out that, yes, I knew I was being a huge d*** when I was posting it.  But, dang it, someone had to do it at somepoint, and I think the mods are too busy with their lives to move every single post!  Sorry, I was just hoping to keep the Alter exclusive to future Heroes games.

It only takes a little time to figure out the right forum, I agree with paul that a little training may have been in order.

I always think it's a good idea to let someone post a few times, to get a feel for his personallity and to see if he will ever return, before jumping down his back on things that experienced posters take for granted. ie. avatars, old subjects, etc.

phewww

Your making a big fuz over nothing.
I've seen these things happen before on IRC (Hexa=administrator of few channels).
To my (not so humble) opinion the WORD newbie is realy lame.

People should try to act in such a way as they would like themselves to be treated!

Nothing more nothing less.
If you (any of you) get tired of listening to a "newbie* ....just don't (listen) and go and do something you do Think worthwhile.

to tell the truth...

I would just like to see more posts here, newbie or not.  This is my main hangout area now, since posting in the ALtar is rather futile at his point. But it seems that whenever I come in here on a daily basis I only see on the average of about 2 new threads a day. NOw I'm not expecting everyone to post everyday but with what.... seven hundred something odd members you would think we could get a few more posts up a day somewhere besides the ALtar. You catch my drift? ANyways I had that exact problem when I was a newbie as a matter of fact until that recent Hommaholics post, I only had one post that got even close to setting on fire, so those days are still fresh in my memory.
Well before u can say "practice what u preach" Im going to be starting a new post, hope it keeps things interesting!!
O and I wanna thank Cheesus for being the very 1st to reply to my 1st post ever..THANKS Cheesus. Btw any of u remember who helped u 1st?

I must agree with you lord paul on that. We WERE once all newbies. We should treat them with more respect. On several games which i have mastered i spend time taking newbies under my wing and teaching them several of my finest tactics.

I think I should add something to that list:

5) Some Tavern Dwellers (a.k.a. newbies) will know more about the game than you do.  Believe it.

I still think you can tell who has been here longer from the stars.  That is what they are really for, to show seniority, even if seniority means only a little.

I haven't started a new screenname for 8 months, so I don't know if this is here or not:  I think there should be some quick tips for a newbie to see before they finish their screenname.

It would probably take the Mods a while to implement this, but I think it would help a little..

I was also a newbie several months ago. My first impression for this HC is ˇ§cool !ˇ¨.
Iˇ¦ve visited the 3do ˇ§officialˇ¨ message board (anyone ever went there would know that it is a mess) before I found this site.

When I started to post, it seemed not many ppl listen to what I say. The first time I really felt being listened to was in the thread ˇ§Precastˇ¨ made by Arcane. I got quite enjoyable conversation with Triton and Space3999. Unfortunately, it seemed they all ˇ§disappearˇ¨ and not show up any more. ;(

Ya, it is the feeling that I am really being listened to keeps me stay. No, I am not a man desperately need attention from ppl. But if you feel like being ignored, you would definitely be turned down and walk away.

This is somewhat true, newbies might know more aboot the game but also they may have just gotten the game or something, then they come here for strategetic help. When i play a newbie over the net, be it HOMM3, SC or D2 ill beat them quite easily, then i play another round against them but this time i try and help them and share with them my VAST knowledge, jk
