Poll Question:
Best type of magic in Heroes III?

Whitch magic do you tinks are best in Heroes III?
A thogth chooise between Fire and Air magic, but I choose Air magic because of its ussefulness on the map. (Earth magic is also good)

Expert slow is considered to be one of the most important spells in the game, and Earth has some other pretty good spells like resurrect or town portal, so I expect it will get the most votes. Air should be quite popular too, due to mass haste and things like fly and dimension door.

Definately Earth Magic. Mass slow is one of the most important spells in the game. Mass Stone skin and Shield are very important. Town Portal, Resurrection/Animate Dead and Implosion. Need I say more? Anti-magic isn't too bad as well.

For me, Earth Magic is top of the list (Town Portal, Resurrection, Slow, Implosion, etc), followed closely by Air Magic (Haste, DD, Fly, Precision), then Water Magic (Prayer, Bless, Clone), finishing with Fire Magic (Berserk).

Hm, my personal preference after Earth Magic is Water Magic. Mass Cure and Dispell, mass Bless and Prayer. Teleport and Clone are also very useful. Waterwalk is an awkward case but could come in handy sometimes.
Third place for Air Magic with Haste, Airshield, Precision and Dimension Door.
Last place for Fire Magic. True, Berserk is great but somehow it ain't worth learing a magic school for one spell. Okay, mass Curse isn't all bad but I'd prefer mass bless any day (unless playing Necropolis, that is).

I voted firemagic.
Ever tried to cast "expert slayer" on a sacrified stack of imps (which is currently cursed) when attacking a stack of Black Dragons?

There's a difference between best spell school and most commonly used school.  Earth has good first level all-purpose spells for almost any situation.  Other schools have all-purpose spells also, but not as many as earth.  But many spells depend on the situation and become MUCH more important than slow/shield/stone skin at the right time.

Still, without knowing which spells I'll get in the guild, I think I'd pick earth.....but I'd rather have ten slots in WOG for 3-4 schools.

I voted for Earth. I thought it was all about the skill and not the spells.

DD, Fly, Armaggedon and other spells work well even without the related magic schools.

So it was clearly Earth Magic to get Slow, Ressurrect, Antimagic and Townportal properly to work.

there nice spells to all the magic schools, but I guess without a doubt the best school is earth...  has more spells that can make the diference in a game...

1. Earth Magic - slow- most used spell, town portal and implosion

2. Air Magic - mass haste kick ass, dimension door and fly are also great

3. Water Magic - mass bless is very good, but my favourite spell is clone (especially if you cast that spell on your awesome commander)

4. Fire Magic - very close to water magic. Only great spell  
is berserk especially if your oponent has to much army.
Blind is useful also.

1. Earth. TP, permanent Resurrection, mass Slow, mass Stone Skin, mass Shield...

2. Air. Mass Haste, better DD/Fly.

3. Water. Clone, Teleport (especially with Chaos Hydras), Mass Bless, mass Cure, mass Dispel...

4. Fire - maybe because I rarely use Berserk.

Note to william: Turn off your capslock. Besides, this is about best SCHOOL, not best SPELL.

Anyway, I prefer Water for battling (Prayer, Clone) and Air for adventuring and other battling purposes (Haste, Dimension Door, Lightning Bolt, Fly)

I only prefer Earth when playing Undead or having a lot of shooters.

I prefer Earth/Air combo. These two schools have most spells that can be "massed". So you can start with mass slow, mass haste, mass stoneskin and pack up all your creatures at once.
BTW: What is poor man's TP?
The only use of TP I know, is travelling to all your towns to gather troops and respawning in the one closest to your enemy.

Poormans townportal:

You have setup a chain with all your heroes, starting from your town, ending with your main hero. Long distance (when using many heroes). The easiest and fastest way to bring your main hero AND your whole army back to your town again, without having the Townportal spell in your spellbook works like this:
Main hero gives all his army but 1 single level 1 unit to the 2nd hero who is placed besides him. Now he attacks a stack of wandering monsters (you either should have tactics, or attack non-living slow creatures, so they canīt get moral and reach ya first round) and flees from the battle. You can rebuy him in your tavern now, with all arties and skills he had before. Now u "chain" back your whole army from hero to hero, till the last hero reaches your town and can give the army back to your main again. All this during 1 turn of course..
