My little advice is to take this waterelemtals specialist if you get water elementals in the starting army. With the "A" trick on home ground he can take out any shooters right from the start.

Try it youll love it.

The "A" trick is simple cheating. I wouldn't play a guy who used it.

This is one of the strongest and well balanced towns (no wonder it took 3DO time to make the expansion, it was worth waiting) that has great creatures in both strength and growth rate.

Advantages:
*Armageddon combo -
3 of the towns creatures are not effected by the armageddon spell. They are the Phoenixes, Magic elementals and Fire elementals. If you are strong in magic, especialy in fire magic, you can make a whole army of those creatures and charge the enemy head on with armageddon, spreading doom to them and not hurting yourself.

*Immunity to elemental magic schools -
Each elemental type is immune to its magic element : fire to firem water to water, earth to earth, air to air, psychic to minf spells and magic to all.

*Speed and Scouting -
The town starts with 2 fast creatures, sprites and air elementals. Thus you have a huge potential for scouting, cleaning the map and revealing enemy positions. This town has the fastest creature, the Phoenix, with speed of 22, meaning that you will always be the first to attack.

*Protection casting ability -
Energy Elemantals can cast protection from fire which can be very usefull when fighting towns that use spells such as fireball and inferno like the demons.
Magma Elementals can cast protection from eart, which is usefull if you are fighting a town like dungeoun that is likely to use powerfull earth spells like implosion.

*Siege:
This town is one that can both attack and defend very well. Having 2 ranged units makes defense much easier for you, and you can always do "hit & run" raids with your Phoenixes and sprites. When attacking a town, the Conflux is even more efficient. You have 2 ranged creatures, and 3 flying creatures (energy elemantals can fly through wals) which makes defending a town almost impossible. Many preffer to fight out battles with the conflux outside the walls of their towns.

Dissadvantages:
*Elementals -
Being elemental is both good and bad. Elementals are vulnerable to offensive magic of their opposite element (fire are vulnerable to ice, air to lightning, ect.).
Elementals are not living but aren't undead, so neither the ressurection nor animation spells work on them.
Elementals are also not depandened by morale, so nothing like leadership or morale boosting artifact may be of value.

Heroes:
The Elemantalist is among the best magic heroes as it starts with one magic school, sometimes at expert level, and this gives you a heck of a magic punch! especialy for that Armageddon combo I mentioned earlier. The towns might hero, the Planeswalker, is among the best heroes of might, as it can get powerfull secondary skills like logistics and offensive easily and gets great attack and defence stats. Some of the games best heroes are here, like Labetha, Monere and fiur.

Magic guild Spells:
Having fast creatures means you will always be the first one to act, and cast spells ofcourse. You can start by cloning your Phoenixes, thus gaining another "1st strike" turn. Also, it is fun to cast beserker on the enemy's fastest or strongest stack, and just watch them slay each other.

Buildings:
Building order is O.K. as you will progress fast through the dwellings only building an additional building or 2 on the way. The towns special buildings are very usefull. The Artifact Merchant can some times bring you some thrue treasured like powerfull artifacts or a missing piece of a combination artifact. Despite the high costs, it is worth it, most of the time. Another advantage of the merchant is that you can sell all the extra artifacts you find while traveling and do not need. But the special building (of the game, not only the town) is the magic university. In this expenssive and large building, you will find all 4 magic schools for "purchase". This can make you and ultimate magic hero, powerfull in every type of magic there is.

Units:
Sprites - Very weak but fast. Have no retaliation, an ability that gives them a chance of surviving. Have huge growth rate (50!) that compensates for their weakness.
Air\Storm elementals - Fast and powerfull. Can fly and shoot when upgraded. Have good stats, but also elemental weakness.
Water\Ice elementals - are slow, so should be upgraded ASAP. When ranged become fairly good units with decent skills.
Fire\Energy elementals - are fast, flying, can go through walls and canst protection from fire when upgraded. Are not strong (lack skill).
Earth\Magma elementals - are a walking shield. Very slow, but not strong enough, are only good to be used as protection to other creatures like storm or ice elementals.
Psy\Magic elementals - despite lacking HP, these are powerfull creatures. HAve good speed, decent skills, no retaliation ability, are immune to all magic when upgraded, have all adjacent attack. Very effective units.
Fire bird \ Phoenix - One of the weakest 7th level units, statistically. Has the best speed, but lacks skill and damage. Has fire spell immunity, can fly and automaticaly ressurects some of its fallen when stack is killed. Most importantly, has growth rate of 4! has low cost, meaning you can get yourself plenty of 7th level creatures fast and cheap. This is the towns greatest advantage: balance!
There are powerfull creatures like the storm and ice elementals, but also weak creatures like the sprite and Phoenix. But what is great about the town, is that it compensates for quality with quantity. As you can see the weaker creatures have great growth rates.

Final rank: 2th favorite. For some time it was No. 4 in my list after the Tower, Castle and Rampart, but after some more fun and victories with that town I can shorely say it is only second to Tower to me.

I agree on some things you said ComradX.
I don't think that this town is one of the Strongest, IMO i think that Tower is the strongest.
It is a good town to start off with nonetheless, because it has some really good units, like the Psychic elementals and the Phoenix.
The Phoenix has good unique abilities.
It has a fire breath, can be reborn, and another one which I have forgotten
This town is quite powerful when used correctly, and it can also be used and be played well by novices or Experts.

A good town type.

Good that we agree on this one too, William. I also think Tower is best, but conflux gives one hell of a fight doesn't it, a shore second place for me. The ability of the Phoenix that you forgot is fire spell immunity. The greatest things about the Phoenix are it's rebirth ability, speed, huge (for 7th level) growth rate (twice then most 7th level creatures) and low cost.
A very good town for any type of player indeed.

Yes i agree, It is a really good town type, maybe second or third for me.
Thanks ComradX that was the thing i forgot.
Yes Phoenix are one of the strongest in the game, because of their Reborn ability, which is the best, and they have good growth rates and dont cost that much.
This town is one of the strongest, but not the strongest.
It is a powerful town to start with, for beginners and experts.
Overall a fun town to start off with, and you can have alot of trouble sometimes when you are versing the computer or an opponent.

THE CONFLUX

Advantages:
- Double phoenix growth is outstandingly powerful and can create unstoppable armies within a few months
- Storm and Ice Elementals are awesomely good shooters who can clear neutral stacks early in the game (their usefulness goes down though in the endgame, however)
- Magic elementals are fearsome
- Elementalists are the best heroes in the game bar none
- The best magic in the universe

Disadvantages:
- Magma and Energy Elementals are sub-par for their levels, which is a big handicap
- Pixies and Sprites are very fragile and go down like bowling pins
- Expensive to build and maintain - which is a problem on small maps
- Planeswalkers are not good heroes

Heroes:
- Elementalists or bust. No other hero class is as feared as this magic wielder. All of them are great, with Ciele and Grindan my top two

Best Unit:
PHOENIX - high speed, good attack and rebirth/double growth make this an awesome unit (all level 7's are great execpt for two)

Worst Unit:
MAGMA ELEMENTAL - very poor for its level, no joke.

OVERALL RANKING: 1st

What I mean, Greek God Superman, is that this town has strong creatures, good costs, good growth rate, excelent magic abilities, great buildings and powerfull heroes. There are shooters, walkers and fliers, all creatures have special abilities. The town is good in both Might & Magic, and it compensates for statistical weaknes (the Phoenix, the Sprite) with good special abilities and huge growth rates.
This is, Comrade, what I call balance.

Confux: My review

Advantages: Magic University; good troops overall; can get mass numbers quickly.

Disadvantages: No ranged shooters until Air and Water elementals get upgraded; one word: cheap. I'll admit, it is overpowered. But it's still one of my favourites.

Best Creature: Something worth mentioning about elementals is that they have neutral morale, regardless of artifacts, town mixtures, undead, or anything. Pixes/Sprites and Firebirds/Phoenixes, however, DO have morale (I can understand the Pixie/Sprite, but not the Firebird/Phoenix). Just thought I'd point that out.

Let's see. . .Sprites can go up to 70 per week (!) and no retaliation; Storm Elementals are good shooters; Magic Elementals are immune to magic, no retaliation and all surrounding hexes; and the Firebird/Phoenix are the fastest in the game! The Resurrection ability of the Phoenix doesn't hurt its case either, and same with fire immunity.

Worst Creature: I find that the Fire/Energy Elementals are a bit weak, same with the Earth/Magma Elementals.

Special Buildings: The Magic University teaches all magic schools to heroes who pay the 2000 gold fee. Nice to have for any spellcaster. The only real special building the town has.

Building Order: If the Mage Guild Level 1 isn't already built, then build it right away; the only dwelling that doesn't require it is the Pixie/Sprite dwelling. It's also needed for the Magic University.

Hero Classes: To be honest, I don't use the Plainswalkers. I generally use magic heroes. But Thunar and Erdamon have Estates, which can help the Conflux's financial situation. Notice how there's no Air/Storm Elemental specialist. . .Well, Air/Storm Elementals are strong enough already, so those specialists were ignored.

Elementalists, however, are already ahead of other spellcasters by having 3 in both spell power and knowledge, and having a basic level in an elemental magic school. I also noticed they get chances to learn the elemental schools more often than others.

Map Sizes: Like any other spellcaster, they need all of the magical resources, particularly mercury. 'The bigger the map, the better', as I say for these guys.

Overall Ranking: 7

Powerfull? yes, overpowered? not IMO.
You can say that Castle or Necro are overpowered because they are powerfull, but that won't be true, would it? same about the Conflux. How can you say it is overpowered if many of it's creatures have lower then average stats? there is balance, and I think that many other towns don't have as much balance, that's why the Conflux may look "too good".
The others are more messed up, so Conflux shines.

There are great posts about conflux here allready so I don't want to repeat them, but to building order.

On turn 1 I recomend building of mage guild. Because you can buy spellbook for all of your scout heroes and that can give them serious advantage (because of no need of returning to town later). After that use your heroes to scout nearby areas and place them properly to chain upgraded sprites among them on day 2. I think that there is no real need to fight with them from day 1. It is enough to place them and start chaining and fighting from day 2.

With this strategy your candidate for main will have spellbook when he reaches expert earth and with bit of luck he will have slow also .

All conflux units have big damage range so expert water with bless is good idea to use with them.

And my favourite magic hero, the most underrated one in my opinion - Luna. Against ground units, this babe is killer. I've managed to take down big stacks of monsters early on with her firewall.

I couldn't agree more. Many like Ciele's 50% arrow boost. But Luna's wall is much farther reaching as Ciele's arrow starts at 60, while Luna's wall starts at 80. It cannot be targeted, which can actually be a benefit, but it lasts two rounds. I like to deploy her with only the Fairires/Sprites she comes with. Having a weak army causes the enemies to split into seven stacks, amplifying Fire Wall's effectiveness. It takes a little more skill/strategy than Ciele, but it's worth it as JUST Luna can continue to be self-sufficient in this manner through the endgame, while other, MAIN hero(es) can use your city's compliment to take on the tougher battles. I always make sure to sprint to expert Forgetfulness so that she can start taking on archer classes as well. Plus as you said, she can take on bigger fights MUCH earlier than many might heroes, and with zero investment in creatures.

Even if you're not playing Conflux, if you ever see Luna, get her. She is THE most self-suficient hero in the game, needing only the Fairires she comes with (even if it's just ONE!) and the occassional magic recharge.

Other than that, everybody's covered the Conflux well enough.

As I wrote somewhere allready. Conflux maybe out balanced, but few simple rules, could make it possible to add it to the allowed list for online gaming.

1. No sprite upgrade before week3
2. no armagetton.
3. only 3 phoenixes per week. not even needed, if both of first are applied

But as it is... invincible only in the hand of players who goes for throng of zombies with 5 sprites or goes for armagetton knowing that half of his army is resistant to that spell (there must be a reason why Conflux magic guild has never got an armagetton)
