What's wrong with me?

Hello, everyone. I am new on this forum. I play heroes for about a year, but I still SUCK! What am I doing wrong?

I start a game and on week 1 I have capitol. Then I build my army. When I have a sufficient army, I go with the hero to explore and find the opponent. But when I actually find him, his army is about 4 or 5 times bigger! I always lose... :-(

I don't play games on-line. Only with AI...

Hmm, thats a common mistake of SP people is to go capitol first.

Try getting at least your level 5 dwelling before going any sort of upgrade to your town hall. You can get your money from chests/banks/etc.

BTW this thread better not turn into a noob-bashing thread.

hmmm i wonder why everybody is expecting a newcomere to be bashed when posting in the Library.

Hi supersonic.Your dilema is often common, as said earlier to most single player addicts.I think it is obvious how your friend gathers more army than you. Beacuse he goes for troops first.

Your way of building concentrates on getting money forst and then creatures.I would like to suggest you to try a different way.
First of all,im pretty sure you use 2-3 heroes week 1.What i would suggest is buy at least 4-5 day 1 no matter the map.U probably play 3do templates, which are fairly poor so 4-5 would do.Ok next,what i would like you to try is pick a main hero from those 5, the other 4 should scout the area, and gather resource and cash.A very important note:you should consider taking money from chests, instead with experience.This issue has been discussed more here.The basic ideea is:Instead of building for money, then getting cash to build and recruit troops from the capitol, it's better to build for troops and get the money u need to build and recruit them from the map.Also you don't have to worry about not getting enough experience with your main hero.Because you may think it's a pitty to waste that 1500 experience from that chest and take the 2000 gold instead. Well it is not true.The 2000 gold will get you troops. Moare troops means more fights, more fights mean more experience. So your hero's experience should come mostly from fights.
This subject has always been present in the Library, so i would suggest to read more opinions hereand evenhere

Yeah, I played on map called "jebus" and I won. But I still  had a bit of trouble. So the general strategy is to build dwellings. When should I explore further than my region? I mean, when should I start going further and further?

If oyu mean your army then you should create your own strategy . What feels best do that .

Since you said you played Jebus, i presume your buddy plays online a little.
Jebus is a good template for newbies to learn some aspects of the game.
On that particular template, you need to hire more heroes than usual. So if you play on difficulty 130% you should buy 7-8 heroes day 1. Basically, u build a structure in your town, you recruit all troops from your town then u start getting heroes out.
I will try to guide u a bit on Jebus.That map is made mainly for 4 players, but it's mostly played 1 vs 1.Let's pretend you play a 2 vs 2 game, so a 4 players game.This map is fairly simple to understand. Each of the 4 players is asigned in one corner of the map.NW, NE, SW or SE.Each of the 4 players has acces to 2 more towns without forts. Also each of the 4 players can find 3 wood and 3 ore mines in his area, also 1 of each resource mine and a gold mine.These aspects are valable each time you play jebus . Even though it's a random map, some things never change.Ok, Day 1 u start hiring heroes.The road form your castle should normally lead in 1 or 2 directions. Make sure you send your fastest scouts along the road. Don't take anything that lies near the road with them, simply follow the road.Day 1-3 you should already know a general situation about your area.In the end you will have 3 roads.This is nearly always valable, but sometimes the map is broken. As i was saying you should have 3 roads or better said the road will be soing in 3 directions.One direction leads to the middle of the map and it is blocked by hordes lvl6 or pack-lots lvl 7.(can also be throng T-birds, Liches, or minotaur kings).We will focus on that road later.
The other 2 roads lead to your 2 secondary castles.So what you should do first is try to get those castles fast.But, you cannot afford to lose time taking both towns with one hero.So you need to chain your army from hero to hero so that you can fight with more heroes in one day and so you can get your troops further away on the map faster. For a beginer, this aspect is usually hard to understand and for me it is pretty hard to explain.The best way to see how it works is to play a 2 vs 2 game online with a guy that knows how to do it. this way you can see for yourself.Also this is explained a bit in this thread .
Anyways on this map, you should aim for LVL 7 dwell week 1. Only difference is the dungeon and rampart maybe, but even with those it can be done.IMHO best towns to play on this template are Stronghold and ofcourse Castle. Everybody plays Castle on it these days because you can usually build angels day 5 and upgrade to AA week 2.

Anyway, back to the topic, the Jebus you were talking about wasn't the Jebus I played. In the Jebus I played, there were 4 areas on the ground and 1 underground. I was lucky, I got the bit underground, so I got the easier game, because only 2 players (1 opponent and my friend) had direct access to it from their areas. The other opponent had a bit of trouble. First of all, I cleared the mines. I had about 3 heroes (next time I'll try with more. Strangely, computer wasn't attacking, so I gathered about 10 Black Dragons and rushed trough the underground path (killing everything with armageddon). I was in the middle area. Hopefully, I found this artefact that enables you to fly, and without attacking the throng of ancients (some time has passed...) I sneaked to the area to the left (1st opponent). He already has conquered the 2 towns, but his main town was my first target. Easily, I smashed his two heroes on my way and got the town. In it, there was a 5 magic guild, so I learned DD. Then I had no trouble with destroying his other cities, because when his hero appeared close to my (new) town, I smashed him. After defeating the blue, I decided to go for green. His secondary town was close, so I flied above the mountains and won the siege. Then he sent 2 packed heroes to regain it, but my ally attacked him frontally. We defeated opponents.

Read the walkthrough (that was the first thing I did), but actually I can't do what it says. After 2 months my army is puny compared to steadwick. But hopefully, I know DD, so there will be no problem with garrisons (e.g. I will just go over them)

I also need startegic help. I most often play whit Conflux and try to get Dwellings 1-4 (1-3 upgraded) before I go for a capitol (I often go for building City hall after Water elementals, Air elementals Sprites and Magic university) But it does not work, because I often get defeated by enemy armies, somethimes even if I play on notrmal difficulty!
I try to have more than two heroes (I often just have a planeswalker and an elementalist in the beginig) but I have finded that they take to mutch on army reserves and often get killed.

LoL, Fortress fan you keep on posting some really funny stuff.

The only tactics with conflux is to build firebird dwelling first week (should be piece of cake btw) and thats it.

4 birds 2nd week can clear almost the whole map and with the logistics bonus it will be super fast too.

Playing Conflux:

Here is how i do it:

First thing i upgrade to spreites day 1. then i buy a 2nd hero and give him 1 sprite(speed 9).Then i kep repeating this ans i buy how many heroes i think it's necesary. I gues the minimum would be 5.

You donnot need anything else for fighting week 1 and even wek 2 mexcept Sprites .
If ur unlucky and u really, really need to fight archers week 1, don't take spreites with you(unless u have exp tactics already, in wich case your air elementals will get to block the archers round 1).
As your main fighting unit is sprites and you won't be getting pheonixes anytime soon, it doesn't really matter what u build week 1 (for money or castle)as long as u have build a citadel and a castle at the end of week 1 in this way u have more sprites next week.Week 2 however, u should build firebirds on almost all maps.To this point you still only have lvl 1 upgrade build.Next you can focus on getting lvl 2 and lvl 7 upgraded. Personally, i never use lvl 3,4,5,6 when fighting against the map. Only exception is in Utopias.I think one can clear the map really well with lvl 1,2 and 7.
Persoanlly i don't like the "pheonix and Arma" tactic, neigher do i think that "4 lvl 7s a week is too unbalanced". As a matter a fact, 4 pheronixes get owned by 2 AA's or by 2 Ab's.The balance turns somewhere like 12 pheonixes vs 6 AA i guess(im not sure though). What i know for sure is that from one point further, pheonixes begin to win.
To me, Conflux is a great town for rushing the map.If u have high enough spell power and knoledge,Grindan as starting hero, and some pixie dwells,SoO (plus a bit of luck) you can fight hordes unicorns or hordes naga queens, or even lotsa behemots week 1 .
So to me, Conflux is the most dangeourous in the hands of a guy who rushes the map well.

@ TNT: usual buildup with conflux: day 1, upg sprites, day 2 mage guild, day 3 air elem, day 4 water elem, day 5 earth elem, day 6 citadel, day 7 castle.
I guess only on Jebus would i do different
Btw: there is a similar prblem with UPG master gremlins on jebus, which i don't do sometimes, but i consider this upgrade critical.

Hmmm... What do you need castle for when you can get birds first week?

And so damn cheap too only 6000 for 4 of them. They are way usefull then 20 storm.

I do not usually play jebus temp but if my opponent agrees for no rule game (it's fun sometimes ) I always succeed on building birds 1st week on plain 3do default temps.
