Hey I'm an expert in this stuff, this thread is made for me!
To upgrade gogs to magogs first week to gain more firepower. 
To give walking dead to scouts cause they got lots of hit points so you could retreat.
To give your scouts 1 gnoll even that one of your native heroes got 4 flies.

Noobish things that are done.
Trying to build a few equally strong heroes.
Coming into this forum proclaiming you are the best before ever playing an online game
Running around with full army always on main hero
Picking up gold, arties, and flagging mines with main hero.

There are some exceptions to the above, actually.
Trying to build a few equally strong heroes.
This one has worked many times for me. 1 hero can't possibly do all the fights you want to do. Having 2 heroes or more often gives you a big advantage. It also allows you to chose a hero with the best skills for main. However, when you do that you REALLY have to know what you are doing. Your 2-nd hero can't level at the expense of your main.
Running around with full army always on main heroThis is a very good idea in certain areas. Not doing so has screwed me up too many times. It is a good idea to do this around unexplored teleporters. It is also a good idea to do it if there is the slightest chance your enemy's main can reach you. There were games where I used expert air to see the enemy heroes and none of them looked too threatening, but then BAMM!!! Expert log+pathfinding+paved road+speed artie and I am caught with my fastest troops on my main and the rest on my scout.
Picking up gold, arties, and flagging mines with main hero.
Sometimes you can flag a mine and leave your slowest troops in there and load them back in on the next turn when the scouts are too far away or have more important things to do.

Damn! How did I miss that one!!!??? That should top this list. Btw, how about this one?
Setting the time limit to 2 mins "to make the game faster", yet considering it ok to take 30 min turns killing golems because you don't have cranim.txt.
The only thing that can beat that is saying "I don't need your stupid file, I play fast" after the abovementioned 30-min turn.

*Use only the starting hero, since you'll save gold if you don't hire more.
*Let all of the wandering monsters flee...especially with your Necropolis hero. 
*Build the Mystic Pond during Week One in hopes of getting some useful crystals.
