I'd play Heroes3, but it won't work on my piece of trash. So I'm forced to play HoMM and MoMM2. And I think they're the best ones!

Heroes 2 has some great music but.....
Heroes 3 is better...despite no opera 
Can't wait for Heores 4,
Sorry but all discussion of Heroes2/3 is kind of passe for me...hanging out for Heores4

HOMM2 better!? It was barely even a distinct game from HOMM1. They added secondary skills, changed the spells a little, and revamped spell memorization, and besides that ll they did was slap on a few towns! It was litle more han an overgrown expansion pack.
HOMM3 actually changed enough that you couldn't copy your strategies exactly. That was good. That made it a distinct game.
HOMM4 is cahging things even more, and will be better for it.

all they did was slap on a few towns? wizard and necro were 2 of the best towns, and they totally changed the game. they also added a ton of new spells, added plenty of new creatures, added campaigns that were actually good, unlike h1's... they also added secondary skillls... you act as if that is a minor thing... that totally changed things as well... i think you need to play heroes 2 agin... sounds like you didnt really get a feel for it very much. cuz its a totally different game than h1... so much deeper...

Hmm... all you weird HOMMIII lovers out there are wrong...
For once, I agree with Camelnor! (an x on the ceiling! (just a local expression, you get the general idea, I'm sure)
HOMMII was better, mostly because of two things:
1)The "cartoony" graphics. They worked absolutely wonderfully, and I completely lost myself in the game. This was no small thanks to
2)the music either, which is still the best I've heard in any PC game. And these two, graphic and music, combined create the games atmosphere, the deciding factor in this matter, as the gameplay and the other elements of HOMM are very good.
So I welcome the Opera back to HOMMIV with open arms! Like the lost son!

Another thing I hate a lot in HoMM3. Look at the upgrades. They make me think 3DO forced themselves to create new creatures and upgrades for all of them. Tell me. How many xxx quenns and kings are the in the game? And I don't think it's easy to find hundreds of kings to fight instead of normal soldiers. A king is supposed to rule his kingdom, not slay lowly gremlins!

heroes II of Heroes III?
I liked them both.
Both played well and both had strengths and weaknesses about them.
It just with higher machine spec needed for heroes III and soon to be Heroes IV, that Heroes II will be far too fast for them.
Pity really.

I think Heroes3 is deeper and in the long better.
But Heroes2 was much nicer to play. I like the cartoon-painted creatures.Heroes2 has also much better music

I totally agree. I like the cartoonish pictures and the sounds in Heroes 2. It is always interesting to listen to the sound of dying Gargoyle, or Griffin, Lich, Phoenix, Roc. The Heroes 2 Original Succesion War maps were better than the Expansion Heroes 2 Price of Loyality. But the AI/ computer was bettter/ hard in Heroes 2 the Price of Loyality. The best choice is a orginal map( Succesion wars map) played at the engine of Heroes 2 Price of loyality.
The AI/ computer in Heroes 2 was better than Heroes 3 because computer's heroes always put some defensive units in their castles. So it was much difficult to take back a castle. So if the computer leave a big stack of undefeatable units, the player must think for another city which may be conquered in 7 days.
In Heroes 3, when conquering a city , AI/ computer did not leave any defence units. So it is very easy ( especcialy for expert players)to take any city in 7 days, before the human player lose the game. I made some maps with much money and free troops for the AI/ computer, but it do not leave any defence troops when conquering my city.
Also, having less gold and resources in Heroes 2 balancing the game at Small and Medium maps, where the human player must choose what upgrades to build and what troops/ units to buy.

At first, I was resistant to HOMM3... I would only play 2 actually until a time where I probably didn't have a choice, like my friend had HOMM3 only and we played hotseat. Before I knew it looked at HOMM2 wondering why I ever denied its sequal.

Heroes 3 is a great game of that there is no doubt. There is something extra about Heroes 2 though, it's got this special feel about it when you play, the graphics, the creature designs, everything is fun and fantasy. It doesn't try to be realistic in scale or design, it is this feel that makes it better than H3 I think. I hope I'm making sense, it's hard to explain.

There are multiple aspects to be taken in consideration. Most of things you talk about, however, are about game atmosphere. While "better" implies you get more accurate battle analysis, proper balance, proper strategies. And this is exactly where H2 fails and anyone who played it online for a while knows that.
Hit and run almost impossible to counter, insane differences between same level monster hit points, total reset of movement when you flee a battle -which leads, as we know, to endless hits and run only limited by your treasury-, magic too powerful compared to creatures hit points and when combined to afore mentioned flaws, endless cast of dimension door for example, impossibility to influence speed so a phoenix will always be faster than anyone -no artifacts, no terrain, no heroes specialties to help that, as Heroes 3 introduces- and many similar aspects which, wisely, were addressed by Heroes 3.
Then another aspect aspect would be Heroes 3 evolution, it transcended through WoG, which now evolved into Era -full mods support and available modding language -easy to learn, allows almost anything, then HD fan made mod, which basically optimize both interface and access to templates to perfection, then Hota -a perfectly designed fan made expansion.
Thus is hard to compare a game which naturally died as soon as its sequel was born, with another game which continues to hook community even after 4 additional sequels are out.
If you like H2 more, is a matter of taste and many arguments make sense. But that does not make from it a "better" game. A game is better when the outcome accurately matches the player strategies and plans carried out, and where the luck or random factors have only a limited impact, reflected on win/loss ratio statistics.

You could always hire some Champions to counter Phoenixes.
