Heroes V Advanced Strategies

Now that the demo is out, I'd like to hear y'all debating the more advanced strategies you are (likely to start) using in HoMM V. How about we make this the official "Debate strategies for several towns" topic, kinda like we have somewhere in the III and IV sections?

I'll suppose I start with something obvious: Do not upgrade Peasants as long as possible to keep them in your garrison for extra money. That seems to work. Slow, but steady extra gold.

For any other advanced strategies, please list them here. I will keep a list every 10 or so posts so that we all can have a reference for little tricks.

Never upgrade peasants imo. Turn them into archers (then marksmen) at the end of the game and use orrin

Sylvan onslaught

Amazing strategy by Sylvan arm:

Take their 2 ranged units (druids and elves I believe), put them in the back row next to eachother in the middle.  Next place 2 treant stacks on either side of the ranged units.  The Unicorn should go somewhere near.  You first move with the unicorn will be to move it directly in front of both archers.  This allows their magic resistence to be increased due to Unicorn's special ability.  The treants will be twin pillars of pure defense, stopping any attack in its tracks.

Also, the hero should be geared to resist spells at all costs and have a killer defense.

The opposing army will not be able to get to your ranged creatures as they will be guarded heavily and with the extremely powerful ranged capabilities of the Sylvan army, the battle is usually a blowout.

From what I've seen of the dueling, it is extremely difficult to defeat this castle and hopefully it'll be tweaked down to become less powerful in the actual game.

Royal Griffins can dive on every square on the battlefield. You'd usually attack your opponent's archers (as they are hard to reach and not likely to move).

However, using their special ability, you can retreat your Griffins even farther than they would normally be able to move.

Finally, against AI you can often predict where his melee troops will move and dive there.

One question, though: are the landing squares completely random?

Landing squares are random, yes. Only sure thing is that they won't land if there is not enough space for them

IIRC, dragons will still be able to hit your range units, through the treants, unless you have tactics, and are able to put treants infront, and off to side by each.  If you simply put them adjacent to the range units, the dragons will kill the treants and the elves/druids.

Overall, good strategy, one I often use (or a variation of)when I have tactics.
