You don't even know what the DirectX SDK is, even less how to use it and you call yourself a geek?
For the record, that SDK is a Software Development Kit, it's used for programming software, not for using software. Only developers need it.
So please give me a break at least I know my stuff.

Hello!
I have encountered a problem when I tried to patch my H5 with patch 1.4 -I downloaded from Celestial Heavens. When I start the .exe file it launches the install wizard then I chose installation language and after this it says: "Heroes 5 is not installed on the computer..." or sg. very similar.
However the game is indeed installed on my PC and it runs OK. But it's in a custom folder, not in 'C:\Program Files\...'
(and the game is paid, if you might doubted )
What can be the problem, and most important: what is the solution?
Thanks.
PS: Oh, and I have only the original game, no mods, no expansions.

Wrong patch version most probably. If you are European and you use other than eu version you get this message.

I do believe I downloaded the european version... At least the file name says: "heroes_might_magic_5_1.04_eu.exe". Shall I start to worry...? Can it be because it's in a custom folder?

I meant other then C:\program files (it's in C:\Játékok\ actually, but it does not count, I think.) Thank you for the try anyway... Anyone else with some idea?
And could you please explain to me what exactly shall I do to manage a duel game? I entered multiplayer mode-local network (or similar), typed in some random player's name, then duel mode, create, and it brings me to the heroe selection screen, but play button is inactive (and I don't know how to select the opponent heroe)... What did I do wrong?

Not sure. Hotseat->duel mode->click a hero->next->choose the opponent->start.

Sure there isn't, I checked... 
So this is the menu:
-single
>campaign
-launches campaign selection screen
>single map
-launches map selection screen
>back
-multiplayer
>"torturing rack" (well, this no question wants to be hot-seat, but the translator had no brains )
-launches map selection screen (create; load; back)
>local network game
-asks for player's name, then brings to a screen that's empty, it has several columns -for servers, I think. The sub-menu is:
*connect (inactive -no net on that PC)
*create
*player's name
*standard/duel game
>ubi.com
About the patch: Can the problem be that there are no previous patches installed. It says on Celestial H. that 1.04 does not need 1.02 nor 1.03 to be installed; so I think the prev. patches needed the one before... I'm not going to accept that I can not add maps (btw. the map-editor needs the patches too, right? )

@Galev: When you press Hot-Seat ("Torturing Rack ") you should have a sub-menu with the following three options:
Standard Mode - this is what you said
Duel Mode - you should choose this
Duel 3x3 - or this if you want 3x3 combat
If you don't have this menu then your game is bugged or something

Then let me just say: "This is the plane of suck."
And just to spice things: last time I started H5 it told me to insert the original disk instead of the the backup.  (I didn't understand what it wanted to mean, it was in English with the words I wrote) However after that it started... Do I have a "made in Thaiwan" version? It have never done it before.
Edit:
A ray of hope: I noticed that there is a "Hungarian/Polish" version. So I might did not download the correct version. Till I have a Hungarian HeroesV. However, Hungary IS in Europe

Well,... ^^
I have patched the game with v. 1.4 and now new problems show up:
Twice from 3 occasions the game closed in the middle of a duel. (I was dueling the AI -using auto combat)
It closed other occasions as well, only in battles, as I remember. But those were load games from a pre-patch save, so I could understand, but the duels? (The game never closed on its own before the patching)
Can I hope that more patching will solve the problem or something else can be behind these errors?

@Galev: Don't even play with version 1.4 because it introduced (weird, huh?) the Gating crash bug. Update to 1.41 as quickly as possible and then to 1.5 and 1.6

2. If, it is a new machine, make yourself a DXDIAG thorough analysis of the components of your machine inner workings and, make yourself a print-out of it. Use the startsearch with a small magnifying glass like search bar immediately over the start menu's windows' logo button.
3. Compare it all with the specs needed to run the game properly as written at bottom of the game's box's rear end panel. That should give you one heck of a good idea as to what are the main reasons of the installation's failure.
4. Use the Clean Disk function to unclog your HD and, the Defrag Disk function to put all files and directories in their entirety to proper order of your HD current partition table.
5. Use DriverAgent.com to see the status of all your in use drivers are obsolete or still in good stance. If, it is a 4+ years old machine, you will have to subscribe to that online service and install all drivers to all the aging components of that aging machine. Using esupport.com as to discover how old is the Bios of the mainboard of this machine is quite nice(can be found onto your print-out of your recent DXDIAG analysis sheet).
BTW: IObit.com also has awesome utility programs to continually have a weekly eye onto the inner workings of windows and its entangled registry entries.
Hope that helps, at least, for now.
