AHHHHH you have spoken my TRUE NAME!

Well theoretically it depends on your monitor size.  I would suggest medium settings based on my experiences with the game on different computers.  Honestly I don't see a whole lot of difference between the quality settings.  Even very low looks just fine to me.

Buying new machine? Get packaged one.

To get a DDR3 based machine is, still, quite costly.

So, to help you search for one. Look for the ones with the DDR3 RAM and, the packaged machine will be assembled for such RAM automatically.

Since, you have to match the graphics card with the RAM installed onto the mainboard of such machine. Make sure, you have a 64bit O.S.. That type of super advanced tech. require 64bit configuration for its optimal functionality.

Heroes 5-T.o.t.E. will work even better on such machine. Besides, the installer will probably create the 32bit Programs Files Folder for it, anyway. If, for some unknown reason, it does not, just make sure it does, when it asks you if this is the pathway you want to install it.

Good Luck in your next machine purchase

That I hear for the first time, however I wouldn't concern myself with the original H5. Why not play tribes of the east instead? Original is obsolete in every possible way.

Thanks, I am just playing the original Campaign right now.  I will check to see if the problems exist in the other versions as well tonight.  I just finished the Necro campaign, and I am starting the Warlock.  As I understand it, the campaigns in the expansions are not the same.

I will check later tonight.

The two expansions are running just fine, and I do not see any of the problems that I see on the original HOMMV installation.  I have moved on to the expansions now, so I think I will just ignore the problems with the original installation.

I build my own machines using parts from Newegg.com,  but the HP Pavillion desktops are good value right now and most if not all of them have DDR3.

It would be more direct for me to give custom advice based on what you are looking for.   But since you ask about what I use...

The desktops I put together are what they would call an "economy" or "budget" machine at Tom's Hardware and Anandtech when they write guides - e.g.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/269162-31-recommended-builds-usage

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3739

My focus is software development rather than gaming, so I am more interested in CPU and memory performance rather than graphics performance.   As it happens Heroes V bottleneck is CPU and memory for the AI and large maps rather than graphics,  whereas for latest generation games, the graphics card performance is usually at least as important (and at least as expensive).   Also, I pick components that I can run under both Windows and Linux.       My main motivation for rolling my own is lifecycle cost.    In other words, the initial cost is not too different and you put in a bit of your own labor, but the benefit is that you can pick when to do your own upgrades as it makes sense.    For instance, the reason why I put together a system last week (and was looking at prices) is because I decided to create a wireless networked backup server for my household that will live in the basement - since performance is not an issue for the backup server, it made sense for me to upgrade some aspects of my desktop and use the older generation components for the server.   So I ordered a new motherboard, CPU, wireless adapter, case, power supply, and memory that will be used on my desktop along with the old monitor, hard drive, keyboard, and mouse.   And the server will get the old motherboard, CPU, memory, case, power supply, wireless adapter, spare keyboard and mouse along with a new hard drive.   Because I am not graphics performance sensitive, both new and old systems used integrated graphics.

So anyway, the stuff I actually bought on 2/15 was:

CPU:  Intel I3 540 (using the integrated graphics)
motherboard:  Intel DH55HC  (ATX size)
Case:  Antec 300   (got this from Amazon Prime to save shipping cost)
Power Supply:  OCZ 500 something - was on sale at Newegg; it pays off over the lifecycle and helps the environment to get an 80+ efficient power supply
Memory - 2GBx2 Corsair DDR3
DVD burner - Lite-on 4xx model
Hard Drive - WD Caviar black 1 TB
Wireless - D-link DWA-556 802.11n  (got this from Amazon also)

All of the above was from Newegg except the noted components from Amazon where I took advantage of similar pricing and (sunk cost) prime shipping.

Ok.  I wasn't really looking for specific suggestions, I just wanted to see what you are using.

I read that the memory controller performance of the i3 is "bad".  I'm guessing in practice it isn't really noticeable?  Anyway looks like a nice build.

Benchmarks are available:

- e.g. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3724&p=2

It's pretty much of a sweet spot for a desktop considering both low price and lifecycle savings from very low power consumption compared to other modern chips.

Problem with LAN Multiplayer

Well hallo there!

I find myself writing in heroescommunity.com (which I read so many times ) for certain problem I encountered that I couldn't find mentioned anywhere on the web.

Us, 3 friends, are playing Heroes of Might and Magic 5 v 3.0 though LAN (as long as it takes ) and everything was going fine and sugar including saving and loading multiplayer game, but then suddenly happened the following situation:

One of the players was eliminated of the game and left just both of us. Then after saving the game at that point we were unable to load it. Any save with only the two left players won't work. The created game through loading that save simply doesn't appear in the LAN games list no matter what.

We tried to simulate such a circumstance again and resulted in same "unappearance" of the game without difference to the number of turns passed after disconnecting the player or if it’s an autosave or a manual one.
Further more, we discovered that only happens when the eliminated (3d) player is the host of the LAN game. If one of the two 'joiners' is to be eliminated the resulted saves between the 2 remaining players are OK to be loaded.

Anyone familiar with such a problem?

Hey there.

Did you take the recent grafic-driver?
Stated the right color-option?

Otherwise I would just reinstall the game. Perhaps some dataunits got damaged.

I got another Problem, it's a little bit strange. I downloaded the two last replayes Elvin posted in the Thread "Temple Official Tourney".
(from Kis)

I could watch the first one without problems even two times.
(the Sylvan-Dungeon one)
But I cannot watch the other one, my game always crashes, when the loading seems to be finished.
I tried some more replays from the Duel-Thread, but here it's the same, my game crashes.

Does anybody know the reason for this or got any other idea?
thanks for your work of mind

It is a commonly recuring bug - as always, I forget the details of it, but the good advice that solves 9/10 problems with this game is:

1) Check that you're fully updated - otherwise download necessary patches (in correct language)

2) Check for driver updates for graphic card

@Borondor, you need to put Elvin's duel map into the maps folder because it contains some special arenas that some replays won't work without it.[since Elvin hasn't answered yet]

Expansions and Windows 7

Just ran into couple of major problems, hope you guys can help me.

Just bought the collectors edition of Homm V. I installed the main game and both of the expansions. The main game runs just fine, but the expansions don't bother to start.

Here's what happens: When I try to run either one of the expansions it only shows the title picture(before the Ubisoft and Nival screen) and then the screen goes black and stays that way. Only way to end this is rebooting the computer.

Game version is 1.5 and Im running it on Windows 7 64bit

Here are my laptops specs:
Turion RM75 dual core 2.3GHz, 500Gb, 4Gb, Integrated Ati Radeon HD3200

I only have ToE, but it runs well on Windows 7 64 bit.   It must be set to run in administrator mode.  The version I have is 3.1.2.98 and the executable, called H5_game.exe, is 12.4 MB in size.    So offhand I suggest checking that a) your links point to an appropriate executable, b) the executable is set to run in administrator mode,  c) you have updated to the latest version, and d) you have installed updated drivers for your graphics card.
