@ fauch, ye, but when u skip footman/squires u save 20 ore. Also 3/4 of shield allies ehp is no joke, its pretty much the same deal as with squires.

About to go into a TOH duel 1.2 map (still think this one is the best Elvin). Me Haven. Him Orcs. But the deal is this:
He doesn't think I can beat him without using light/dark magic skills...only might skills. So I want to prove him wrong....except it might not be possible!

so no magic skills also means no PoS or PoE? so you'll have to take empathy/DG

but then you can pick destructive and summoning?
but it's probably not going to help much. maybe master of fire could work, but there is probably much better.
and if you go uber defensive with preparation and expert training and shield your shooters? orcs are forced to attack anyway, and you will strike 1st. (unless he is allowed to use war cries?)

Well the battle happened and I narrowly got beaten, I mean narrowly. PoS and PoE was allowed. He could use war cries. I had:
Level 21
Attack -> Retrib & PoS
Leadership -> Div Guid
Defense -> PoE
Luck
Point was, he said I couldn't beat him, but it was so close and if we do it again, I could beat him.

haven hero with no magic except PoS and PoE is nothing new
even without them & using empathy/DG only you still have a chance based on luck and morale

Nahh, full might Haven may beat orcs, but only if they dont expect it. Like Fireball + master of fire haven vs orcs -> work only if they waste 3 lvls for shatter dark/light

Thing is PoS and PoE are from light magic school and I feel that for Haven vs orcs, dark magic is a must. Haven will completely mess up orcs with dark magic....mass confusion, puppet, mass slow...

nah dark isn't a must for hav vs orcs; I once wrote about light v shat light and dark v shat dark here
imo, orcs have a lottery of picking shatter light or shatter dark v haven. Picking wrong one makes them disadvantaged, just less disadvantage if no shat light v light.
anyway only test is in combat

In my opinion the shatter magics are useless....rather let your orcs focus on what they do best: attack, luck, leadership, and the low probability enlightment (if get's offered).....
Only shatter destructive is one I might consider if up against warlock.....

I was surprised to see zenithale cast regeneration. when you said only might skills, I thought no spells at all.
of course the real test is academy vs orcs with only might skills allowed

No-one said you couldn't cast any spells with no mastery, sometimes the best choice after casting PoE & PoS. Adding insult to injury is when morale occurs & regen happens twice for the angels or pallys

Yeah, and then having empathy trigger too so your hero can cast regen soon again!

Sorry for the necromancy (although I think it should be alright in a thread like this one), but after having had the game lie around for many years (I played maybe one and a half random maps, problem were the long AI turns) while still mostly playing Heroes 3 (and I’m not even good at that, while I can beat up the AI on impossible with most factions except Tower which I never even get built up or Inferno with which I always roll poor or even blocked starts and don’t get the demon fun going before it’s too late by now after having played on easy and normal for many years because I’m a coward, I still get capitol before Lv 7 dwelling 90% of the time, but whatever) I suddenly felt like finally giving this game some attention and started up the first campaign of the non-addon version since for some reason I can’t access the non-ToE campaigns from ToE.
So, I played the first four scenarios, and won them without a sweat (even though I was probably playing horribly, as I have no idea what this game’s good skills and what this game’s Eagle Eye and Learning are... only the third map was annoying and took many in-game months because I didn’t know what to do with the almost completely cleared map on which I didn’t see one monster and just kept ending turn hoping for a timed event). Then, today morning, I noticed my game version is 1.0, so I patched it to the last patch 1.6, then played the fifth and apparently last scenario “Fall of the king”. It took me a couple hours to complete, but again, no trouble. I give my army to the old guy, try sending him through the southern garrison, and it works, he disappears. Dumb move by me that he had my entire army and Isabel was left with one weak’s creatures, but it didn’t matter, the king fought that demon guy, lost, died, I got an end of the map screen, pressed on “continue” ... and the game crashes. I reload from the convenient cutscene autosave. Crash. Start as administrator? Crash. Give it another try? Crash. ARGH! And, while I appear to have beaten the campaign, the next one is still greyed out.
It took me a while to find out, but apparently patching your game will ruin your campaign saves. Which is odd, because I still was able to play the map. I had even restarted because my savefile from day 1 of the mission for some reason instantly ended the day when loading it. I really am not motivated to play that stupid mission or even the entire campaign all over again, so I’m wondering: Is there another way to complete the campaign? Like opening one of the games files in notepad and changing it to completed or just downloading someone else’s file which was played in “full” 1.6 and finishing the mission that way?
In short: I patched my game and now it crashes at the end of the campaign, what to do?

that build order is completely wrong. if you're playing in higher difficulties, you don't have lots of money and resources, therefore can't build everyday, at some point you'll not have enough resource and not enough money to hire creatures.
the tactic here would be; build cheap buildings first until your town lvl is 15 then build capitol.
in day 1, your hero must be able to capture sawmill and ore pit, at most it must be done in day 2. the first need to be build is peasant farm then peasant cabin to reach town lvl 3 then build town hall. then build whatever building as long as cheap and only requires wood/ore to reach town lvl 9 then build city hall. and of course you must build city hall first before jousting arena and capitol first before altar of light. also, the key here, don't build building that requires resource that you don't produce daily yet, example - don't build monastery if you haven't captured gem mine or crystal cavern or else you will not be able to build altar of light due to lack of gems.
and do not build upgraded dwellings (except for peasant cabin) and magic guild lvl 2 - 5 before you build castle and all non upgraded dwellings!!!

Very good tips. You should try do this in multiplayer.

i usually keep the peasants home, since they dont matter into any real battle and train monks from footmen, then upgrade those to inquisitors(sometimes i can afford to train the maximum 20 allowed per week)- the gain in hit points from footmen to inquisitors is quadrupled (60 hp/creature=> 1200 hit points per week, way more than anything any town produces weekly per tier); well, in about 6-7 weeks you ahve more than 100 inquistors that will kill about anything
