I took vittorio since i knew my opponent would try to rush me and tried to get a lot of exp before he came. When he reached me 2nd week, 3rd day. He has lv 12 and i was 10 so i tought maybe i stood a chance. Big mistake. His healing tent was just too strong pretty much healing all the skeletons that my triple flaming ballista (yes, i had it with lv10) and thta my marksmen could do. and his destructive spells just did too much damage.

So.... what can i do? The same thing has happened to me against wizards and so.

Im curious why you didnt care of the tent first, not skellies. Its rather easy to destroy it with flaming ballista and ~50 crossbows.

@alcibiades - yeah, I try to plan my planned skills/perks before game but did you have to use Ellaine as an example?

Why, Ellaine is my favored Knight, she has great starting skills and she starts with tons of Peasants, who when upgraded into Brutes can kick pretty good @$$.

Not nearly as effective as Dougal creeping My best is Maeve, maybe not the best earlygame knight but she's just solid.

First of all, thanks alcibiades for your great guide on skills. Believe it or not so far i hadnt paid any mind to how the skills and perks sistem worked, and i was completely unaware of many things that now seem obvious.

Actually, i have to say that i find your levelling sistem rather hard to follow if you dont pick maeve. With dougal it is indeed very hard due to the fact tha flaming arrows keep showing (never noticed it before). Also i have to say i tend to pick logistics as soon as it appears due to its great use but certainly it is annoying that its skills keep showing. Do you consider swift mind worth spening the 2 levels you need to get it?(plus scouting) Silent stalker also seems interesting aktough i guess all that your enemy needs to find who has a bigger army is going to the tabern.

So I guess the question now would be .... what hero to take? It is indeed a rather difficult question. Ellaine has indeed great skills, but they are not combat focused so i always try to get her to leave her in the castle with the peasants. I cant say i feel tempted to pick her as main hero. Maeve ... well it is indeed not a very good start game hero altough her skills would be great to achieve empathy in early game. Also its great that she starts with fastness, it annoys me a lot when i do not find it in my guild. I have a question ... does her ability work level per level (like it appears to say in the description) or just after 10 levels? When i used her i expected to find (at level 4 or 5) in the spell something like:"increases initiative by 14" but i just found the old 10%

But dougal ... his early creeping is just great and i find him extremely useful in late game since i always try to train 20 peasants into archers, if the map has a archer dwelling i can get to produce nearly 60 marksmen per week. Cant beat that. Today i defeated an elf that had a much greater army than me with just squires, a few zealots and marksmen in a tight formation (tight formations rule in early game against might heros)

Level skill/perk picking is really about trying to get the necessary perk you need BEFORE undesired advanced perks have a chance of popping up...

Aim first for necessary perks that don't lead to undesired advanced perks & limit the number of skills you currently have

hard to explain: with dougal, if one wants retrib soon (without regard to other pressing circumstances),
1. then first priority perk is expert training (don't choose other counterstrike perks),
2. then adv attack skill,
3. then battle frenzy,
4. after which retrib can pop up as advanced perk

...until then if advanced attack is picked, then flaming will pop up heaps &
if you pick battle frenzy & expert attack before expert training, then power of speed will also pop up heaps too.

ofc, after all that there is problem of trying to get retal strike for empathy (if you want it) & mass light/dark spell...if one got logs and/or enlight in the meantime, could be frustration but eveything is based on probability/benefit of good gain now vs probability/benefit of better gain later...

put another way, for dwarves, i like soldier's luck/magic res/dwa luck.  I always pick magic res as priority perk, then pick dwa luck & lastly soldier's luck.  Picking soldier's luck before will give possibility of undesired dead man's curse popping up.

You've hit the nail with logs or even enlight as IMO haven (typically with dougal/vittorio as it is weak at early creeping) is worst at normal game levelling choices when trying to reach optimal skill/perks.
Best thing about Maeve is guaranteed haste (btw boost is +1% per hero level which even affects inquisitors haste spell - see manual 3.1 under windrider, however the game display does not show decimal points init even tho it IS in the game calcs): can choose tactics instead of pwr of speed.  Level 20 expert haste gives +60% init instead of +40%.
@alcibiades - good on you for choosing ellaine[sorry to steal your thunder in this reply on skill picking tho]

Depends on lot of factors, but most importantly map size and available gold to train. Small maps and limited resources Dougal and Vittorio. Bigger with larger resources Maeve.

Attack, defence, leadership (empathy is great) , logistics and light. Against magic factions defense could replaced with enlightment if u lucky enough to get it.

War machines should be skipped, if you can, like if you have regeneration never choose war machines.

Sometimes dark is useful, just to surprise your opponent.

Ultimately I still think the first aid tent is awesome even if you already have regeneration, the extra healing and res'ing can be invaulable in some match ups, its cool with Paladins ability to heal (have tent res and Paladin heal).

Vittorio is great for a creeping strategy with his war machines, and Ellaine is excellant for both early power and even for money excell with the peasants.

I personally love Rutger's movement, if you can out walk your enemy chances are you can beat him in other areas. And Maeve, as already stated by Elvin, is rather solid and strong in mid to late game with her skill progression and her haste bonus.

Dougal gives you some range advantage with all the archers and his bonus but he still is not a favorite of mine. Though not overly powerful, I enjoy playing around with Klaus' bonus to the knight's retal strike, it can be kind of cool if you know how to abuse it.

Hi Agitus.  You can read about it in the (in-depth) fan manual in your heroes v fan documents folder.

Basically some of them change.  So the marksman gets a no defense shot at half distance.  Or the griffin gets a battle dive ability (upper left button).

My favorite hero with the haven (my favorite who knows why^^) is Klaus because of his skills which help the knights attack stronger with every squares they move on, this castle allow lots of interesting strategies with lots of combinations, for example I use to create two front in battle, griffins and knights attacking early in the battle the most dangerous ennemies, while the angels and vindicators attack the main troops the ennemy use against me.peasants protect the zealots and crossbowmen while they shoot and cast spells where they are needed^^
Everyone of you, What kind of strategies in battle do you use?

Haven vs. Sylvan seems awkward:
a) when they rush in, your paladins get pinned to the baseline with no space to charge
b) dragon breath discourages you from completely covering up your crossbowmen, but if you leave a gap then their wind-dancers sneak in
c) you rely on light magic to buff and then pristine unicorns become very strong
d) you charge your angels against their shooters and their treants bind you down
e) dark magic is the least effective against Sylvan.  Frenzy and puppet master has limited effect against high defense and all their stacks are roughly even in power.  Mass dark curses can be countered.

Questions:
1) Should my griffins dive against arcane archers or high druids?  Ranged damage is bad but a strong resurrection or rain of arrows with damage spell is worse.
2) Are squires worth it so crossbows don't lose *that* badly in a shooting match?
3) Should I consider using marksman rather than crossbowmen?  They will advance with winddancers, unicorns and dragons, later on treants, all with high defense.
4) Which griffin to use?  Against everone else I use imperials, but without battle griffins I can't beat down their treants with take root just using retaliation strike.  He will finish you off first with divine vengence.

You don't seem to use stormwind, with initiative/speed penalty to flyers only wind dancers can pin you and only if they have tactics - which you can get yourself anyway. Dragons can't reach you and paladins may act first. And if you have enlightenment/defense? The retaliation from the paladins can be quite painful.

Pristines are indeed a pain which is why I tend to use the spells that sylvan casts so that they don't get two buffs per action. But I like to get mass cleansing just for them Another possibility is to go dark, can work lovely sometimes. Doesn't have to be necro effective, if you can frenzy unicorns to hit their units, arcanes or say druids to avoid channeling it can be good enough. Mass can be countered and that goes both ways.

Where the griffins will dive depends how well you can read the opponent. He may guess which you aim for and move or teleport or move both though I consider this a flawed decision. I've also dived on treants and my opponent moved both druids and archers heheh

Do NOT take vindicators. Ever. You need your crossbows too much to risk losing them, and you will without squires. Marksmen are not bad but frankly I'd rather take out half or more arcanes/druids first. Besides if sylvan comes to you you can prepare a defensive build.

Divine vengeance doesn't count, any map that allows it is by nature imbalanced. You should look for better maps or place a rule not to use it in final battles, it's pretty broken.

maybe I'm wrong but I remember that with teleport vindicators can be quite good ( maybe increase their numbers with training, also Laszlo would help) against shooters, and anything else for that matter. You could also buff them with endurance from inquisitors.

Well building them early is a mistake, by week 3 you have a few angels for creeping and that is enough against most. Hopefully you'll have regeneration by then.

You're making me miss the Crusaders again. Damn. I was extremely upset Knights' double attack damage hoes got removed. Then TotE came out and they tried to pacify crusader fans with this sub-standard walking metal junk known as the Vindicator.

For the benefit of those who only started with H5,

in H2 they did 10-20 damage per hit as tier 6,
in H3 they did 7-10 damage per hit as tier 4,
in H4 they did 10-16 damage per hit as tier 3.

Dark vs dwarves is pretty risky, depends on how good your opponent is. Dwarven Luck, or other resistance can be a pain should he have those (Not a problem if you have staff of Sar-Issus) His low damage vs high health makes Dark less effective, also Knights don't have the spellpower nor the mana to make it worthwhile. Of course on a huge map you can get many boosters.

My picks would be Attack(tactics/Power of Speed, retribution), Defense(ideally - Last Stand), Light(either Stormwind or Fire Resistance+Surpress Light), Logistics(Swift Mind or Snatch), Luck(Resistance, Soldier's Luck) or Leadership{Emphaty) and if lucky - Enlightment (stat boost and Intelligence)

As for hero - Maeve is the most endgame hero in Haven, although I personally like Lazlo with rockhard Vindicators or Rutger to breeze through the map in no time
