only4dungeon is indeed true that rangers have a lot of knowledge but they have low spellpower.the only important magic skill is light magic with mass....sylvan is good against factions who have light magic skill because of their Pristine Unicorns (only in ToE)...it sounds good to play with sylvan faction against academy or heaven.

OMG, Rain of Frenzy is just the sweetest thing there is. ^^

and besides, there is a reason why the Ranger has such a high Mana Pool. It's for spamming his opponents with spells, of any school. Who cares if their spell power is low? With the correct Avenger Picks, you get a MotW that can be used instantly and that is 50% more effective.

It's not low, you easily hit 20+ with high druids..

what about getting master of abjuration -> fire resistance ? imo its a great skill, but i still would pick master of wrath -> storm wind in most of the cases

It is but only vs dungeon/fortress. Sometimes academy especially if you face Nathir The good thing is that it not only prevents ignite but also the defense reduction from master of fire.

it is not true elvin....it is indeed that the ranger might be a good spellcaster due to sorcery 8%,light&destructive magic 8%.However it is good to take dark magic only if you conquered or will conquer an inferno,haven or necro town,because these towns have dark magic spells in their magic schools....but summoning magic-it is a waste of skill...it won't use you to anything because you have low spellpower...

There is a lot of factors to take into consideration.

Orc won't use magic, so you can have those shinny "Pristine Unicorn" and boost your shooters with Light magic, which should therefore apply as well on the unicorns.

I'd turtle druids and archers behind trents and unicorns, otherwise... if your problem is earlier, I don't see how you can't get rid of the orcs with druids/archers and fearies... and later your Dryad can resplenish your trees.

But as Elvin said, we would need more of your "tested" ideas to orientate you and help you help yourself.

Lets say the map is disputed island, even if my heroes stats are better orcs win! i use light and destruction magic. I always turtle my shooters behind large creatures like savage trees and dragons. I have tried everything! I must surely do something wrong! orcs are really strong! Any more ideas?

Light and Destructive? Pick only one - preferably Light. As the game lasts longer and armies are bigger your Destructive power will be less and less effective and your Druids will meet a quick end, stripping you off a good Spellpower ratio (even with that spellpower a lot of damage will be soaked up by Rage). Light, Leadership and Attack allow you to keep Rage under control, Defense and Enlightment ensure that you'll survive longer and Logistics is a must on bigger maps. I'd probably ditch Attack for Defense.

Don't cover up your shooters with Dragons - Treants and Unicorns can do that while Dragons need to score some good multi hits with Acid/Prismatic breath.
What units do you pick? I'd usually go for Dryads, Wind Dancers, Arcane Archers, High Druids, Pristine Unicorns, Ancient Treants and if my luck is high - Crystal Dragons (Emeralds if it's low)

Disputed island is one of those rotten maps where first to get middle gets utopia, mine and a crazy amount of artifacts/gold/resources Sylvan CAN potentially clear middle first but that would probably require a lot of luck and last stand, orcs will have some losses sure but they'll still have a powerful ballista and warcries. I am willing to bet that a warmonger stack plus goblin fodder with a good hero build could survive nicely those phoenixes week 3-4 though I haven't tested it. Most if not all factions can break week 4 if you handle them well and are skilled on rushing, the tricky part is managing them on week 3. That is not to say that you will be able to clear EVERYTHING in your area but then again that is the point of rushing.

the key to beat the orcs is attack combined with luck and of course initiative.....i played against only4dungeon(elvin knows him) a game i with sylvan and he with stronghold.....i had the upper hand and my arcane archers destroyed in a single shot with good luck his tier 3....my hero was gilraen and he's was the hero specialize in tier 3 (warmongers)...my wind dancers destroyed his goblins and his centaurs before they shoot...then i advanced with my unicorns and treants and destroyed the rest of his armies.....the key to beat stronghold is to attack them first before they gather blood rage in battle.....i faced with "stronghold problem" in the past and this is the only way to beat them....to attack thir creatures first before they attack yours....i hope this will work to you....

I'd like to think that the problem is a bit more complex than "QUICK!!! BEAT THE **** OUT OF THEM BEFORE THEY MOVE!!!" especially since not everyone can out iniative the heavy stronghold critters. Not to mention that not nearly enough units may have the speed to do so... If you send somethin over there and it doesn't do outrageous damage you're not only sacrificing a stack for nothing you're giving him free bonus rage... nononono I prefer to lure his stacks to me cut off the slower threats and then pick them off one by one.

It's never that simple, play the same battle a hundred times on different ground for random atb and it will look different each time. Place of ranger, barbarian, arcanes, high druids, chieftains in particular can randomize the battle a lot to the point of losing you the game. Then there's placement, builds etc.
