Not on a ranger. Plus it opens up the path to retribution.

Mmmm...
I was thinking about making Sylvan abusive and I found that boosting their initiative is a great way to do this ( I know that's nothing revealing, but maybe it wasn't posted here yet O_O )
So. Two things you need to focus on are Expert Light Magic---> Master of Wrath and Expert Leadership. I think everybody knows why...
But there is one catch...
If you take this two you will have some problems getting the most handy skills like Logistics and perks, Luck and perks ( if you do not play Ossir) and attack and perks...

What I really hate about Sylvan is how the alternate upgrades made the original ones redundant.
There's hardly ever a choice between them...

for sylvan, you need to be greatly skilled in creeping and economy. Dwellings are expensive; first a damn lot of wood, then a damn lot of gems/crystals. Plus, you need to be skilled at counter-rushing - because your opponent will try to take you down as early as possible. In other words, playing this faction isn't easy. After 3-4 weeks of good play, with all dwellings (or at least the key ones) built and upgraded plus a decent hero, you should win with ease.

For might factions, don't bother with magic.. ok, it doesn't hurt to have light magic, but it's not that important. Go for attack, logistics, familiar ground if you can fight on grass terrain, luck, maybe leadership with retribution. You attack first, you kill 60-80% of enemy forces and the game is yours, no need for light magic.

Against dark mages, it's good to get cleansing - and cleansing only, since you will do that first-turn crushing blow anyway and debuffs such as suffering won't be that much of a problem with enemy army reduced to 1/4 of its original size against yours, nearly untouched. It's not important that much in the endgame, though - but it does wonders in earlygame. You know, when a demonlord or necromancer comes early with a puppet master spell and your dragons can't do the slaughter yet because you just have 1-3 of them. When your armies grow to reasonable numbers, it hardly makes a difference whether he puppets you or not - the sylvan's first turn is so deadly that you will most likely stomp your opponent even when some of your stacks get affected by puppet master.

It's hard to stop rushers, though. Arcane archers can quickly destroy the ballista now after like two weeks (with ossir), so Deleb rushes are no longer THAT scary. Unless you play something like peninsula, but people tend to use the ToH maps now anyway.

The worst scenario? important mine guarded by elder druids, arch mages or arcane archers, of course. There is little you can do about it, unfortunately. You can always counter an uncatchable crystal mine with resource silo, but you're dead meat if you can't get any gems. Pay attention to windmills~~

Ah yes, don't forget avenger. many good units can be quickly slaughtered that way. Now you need just one of three units killed (basic, or any of the upgrades) to be able to choose them as favored enemy, and you choose all of them at once. Highly potent against specialists ~~

Those are just basic tips.

The thing I'd love to discuss is:

- how NOT to lose 1/2 of your starting army when a group of annoying sprites protects the sawmill.
- How to beat creep casters without loses (earlygame)
- how to beat arcane archers and master hunters without the annoying atb randomness dillema.
- How to stop an early warlock rush.
- How to stop an early academy rush.

And so on.

Except that, general strategy for dummies:

haven: they are as helpless in earlygame as you so try not to get outcreeped and find some gryphs/archers to get your favored enemies. Attack before they can start massing trained paladins. pretty big chance of victory.
Inferno: survive the rush, get a big army, win the game. Try to get hellchargers as favored, kill cerberi with rainbow dragons if possible.
Dungeon: Quite hard (but not on maps like hourglass or any maps where there is a high level creep blocker separating you from your enemy). Survive the rushes, get a big army, some good arties, desperately look for hydras on the map to get them as favored enemy.
Academy: get light magic, dont get rushed to death, do your first strike - gg.
Necropolis: Don't get wasted in midgame, get cleansing. You won.
Dwarves: Get some good favored enemies, play along when they turtle around - you will most likely win a grand battle if you have some favored enemies on your list. Watch out for ingvar ~~ Arcane archers don't work too well against legions of defenders.
Orcs: Uhh, hard. Watch out for cyclopes and get executioners/centaurs as favored enemies. Light magic may turn the tide for you later on in the battle. Don't let them get too much rage.

One thing that could work is flaming arrows and warmachines but I don't see that happening too often Sprites I avoid in the first week though an eldritch arrow and some blade dancers can get you out of it with some losses.. Afaik there are no ways to deal with casters without first aid tent or resurrection. Or outrageous luck

Uh, Treants and the Regeneration spell works real good for some of those casters.  If you want to play ATB roulette, you can try to have your Arcane Archers go before all those 10 intiative baddies.  Without Wyngaal though, I don't like the ratios.

do you know if there is any good way not to get rushed to death as sylvan?? because it appears that any magic faction with decent sp has big advantage over those glassy elves .
thanks for any advice.

To be specific Destruction, Flaming arrows, Imbue Balista, War Machines .  However, it is not easy regardless.  Sylvan seems to be a powerhouse late game, but early game...not so much.

warmashines is not an option with 2% chances, it could be hard.
so i see it's really hart to defend against good rushers(maybe it's impossible?)

As Elvin suggested.  Large maps..larger the better.  Preferably resource rich maps too.  Otherwise, it is really really difficult.

Are you a new player?  Did you have expert avenger?

Then you must have spread your skills too thin without good planning. I used to complain about that but eventually came to see that I was taking the wrong approach.

I had expert avenger , in fact I had expert of all the 4 other skills towards the end because crap ability keep showing up again and again.
I was ossir so i started with luck. I got logistic , destructive and ballistic. Had the 5th one empty. Imbue and rain of arrows shows up early before I took logistic and ballistic. Then they never show again ever. Skills that kept showing up and i didn't want so I took all the 5 skills to experts. Catapults , navigation , resourcefulness. After I took destruction when the other 4 skills got expert, great old master of ice and storm show up instead of fire. It was really lol.
I know that if I take the useless abilities , then chances are imbue arrow and rain will show but in the early levels , is that wise to do it when I can just pick advance/expert skills first and hope that abilities I want will show up soon?
This was the only time that ever happened like this , I know its rare but things like this do happen in homm5.

i have to hand it to those tree-hugging elves. looks like they are good for something after all! this is a newbie venture into sylvan, so please excuse my ignorance

i was playing Diriel, Durael? or something like that and was really kicking butt. character had the "archer's dream" set, and "quick mind" she also had expert dark and expert summoning and expert avenger, and using avenger with either frenzy or wasp swarm simply destroyed the enemy. my question to experts out there though is what i should get for her final skill slot based on the skills artifacts and race? i know this heavily depends on the enemy too, but in general

current skills:

expert avenger: rain or arrows, imbue arrow
expert summoning: master of conjuration, elemental balance, fire warriors
expert dark: master of mind, master of curses, dark renewal
expert logistics: scouting, pathfinding, swift mind
expert enlightenment: intelligence

current artifacts: archer dream set, tome of dark magic, armor of forgotten hero, ring of speed, dragon bone greaves, cursed ring, dragon tooth necklace, sextant of sea travel, lion helm

any changes in artifacts or skills?
