Best in what? You really can't judge which is the best of them, you got to have some categories like:

The inner look of  town - HOMM 2

The outer look of a town - HOMM 3

The towns name (Knight, castle, life...) - HOMM 3

The statistics of the units - HOMM 3

The look of the units - HOMM 5

The look of the heroes - HOMM 5

The statistics of the heroes - HOMM 3

Nice doing though, this is an improvement from your last posts like in the "k" thread and the "blank post game", nice .

I like the look of the HOMM 1 Castle, but the Mage Guild kinda ruined it. So I have to go with the HOMM 2 look, followed by the HOMM 5 one. HOMM 2 looks like an old city really, which is a thing I like.

I liked the H1 rendition because of the creatures! The town looked lively unlike all others, which seem abandoned in a great hurry. Why the developers never include inhabitants is beyond me. Imagine Dwarves mining ore, Champions practicing, Angels flying in the sky... Just remember the Dragon Cliffs from Rampart.

The H1 version was painted in a weird perspective too; I like the way the street is going down from the viewer, then branching off to the left and vanishing in the woods, while the other road is leading downtown, to the castle in the distance. The colors were off base, though.

The H2 Castle was empty, while the H4 one seemed like a scattering of odd buildings lying around, although I agree the colors and textures felt right.

The H5 town ought to look most impressive as it's 3D, especially with that skyline. Nevertheless, the citadel seems way out of proportions, like a Titan dwelling or something

Roster wise, I couldn't care less - the human faction has always been of no interest for me. The current alignment might even be the most intriguing one due to its darker overtones.

So, it would be H1 for me.

H1 and 2 dont look enough like a city cause of a lack of housing, apart from that though they look good. H5 has alot of housing but i really really do no like every building, or almost every building, is built as an adition to the castle. its very annoying not a real sense of a castle. H4, i dont like those 2 cliff, hilly things, does look like the right place to put a town, and why is the castle at the top?

i really like the H3 one. its got housing but not too much to interfere with other things. the layout is good, portal in the air, market place in the middle of the housing and castle across river. also looks good

H3 for me

Well, if talking of looks, HOMM V takes the medal here. I have played it in the beta version and it's prety good (I am sure it's even better in the final version). Althouhg I am a Wizard - Tower - Academy fan, I also like the Human faction. It's the classic representative of good, that fights for the sake of the world... (and for the land, gold and resources that come with that. If talking playability, it has always been fun to play as Knight, but HOMM III (like in many other cases) is still the best, most fun, with mighty angels, fast Griffins and great mid level Crusaders. And most important, no peasants! (having such a lousy creature sucks!).
So that's the way I see it.

the castle will always have what it takes to make me despise its creatures, the weaklings.I think the homm 3 castle is the best, but  still, it is puny enough for me to hold them within my graso, ready to crush them...

i deeply apologise for the ones that like the castle, and ask them to excuse my harsh words.

Ah the castle has always made sense.

If you'd read my "H3 explained" thread you'd know that I like towns which.. 'make sense'.

In all of them they have basically the same idea with the same type of units, and well the only thing really is the graphics...
H2 does look nice though.

I voted for HOMM 4.

I like the look and feel of the town and castle fitting well into the countryside. The achitecture and colors are well balanced, and it has a good artistic feel that most resembles the appearance of a good painting.

HOMM 4 also has its buildings well spread out and easily recognizable, identifiable and accessable and doesn't look like it was all crammed together as an after thought to the rest of the game.

In terms of looks, I think the Heroes 5 town is really awesome and unique compared to the previous versions.  I thought it would be frustrating trying to click on the dwellings since they are all crammed together on the castle, but Ubi solved that problem by just having one button.  In terms of creatures, I kinda wish Heroes 5 had left out peasants and kept pikemen like in 3.  So I guess my vote for creatures alone would go to 3.  I still voted for H5 overall though.

The fist thing I'm gonan do when I get Heroes V is that I'm going to kick the Griffins out of the castle, move all units behind it one lvl down (except for the angel) and adjust their stats accordingly.
Then I'm going ot re-name the Paladin to Champion and use Nicolai's model, tweak it heavily and make a REAL crusaider and paladin as a lvl6 unit...

Other than that, the castle is fine by me as it is...

To reestablish the highlevel paladin is an interesting thought really ... the griffin is now quite established with the knights, returning as the knights symbol since Heroes 3, but I actually don't think it particularly belongs there (it would be better off in a dwarven mountain town for instance) - but that may be as it is. What reeeeeealy bugs me is this stupid peasant. I simply *can't* understand why they have to make these useless units (also, the zombie is one of them!). And then omit the pikeman, which was always an excellent and perfectly logical choice for unit (archer, pikeman, swordsman and cavalier - it just makes good sense to have them all in the human town!).

About the looks ... I think the HV castle looks a bit dull ... I might actually prefer the H3 one. Loved the Portal Of Glory!!! The HIV one is plain awful (booooring) and the other ones are ... well, garish.
