blobby

I got really highly ranked in both Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 2 but I never attempted to enter a formal competitive tournament. My clicks per minute were nothing spectacular but I seemed to be really good at utilizing all of the abilities that other players tended to neglect. The sorceress was probably my overall favorite unit in WC3 and I was always slowing/polymorphing stuff into sheep and making crap invisible so I could destroy the opponent's economy. People got pissed off at me a lot. I'm an obnoxious opponent.

At the competitive level for RTS, to be anybody, you actually have to train yourself to have extremely high clicks per minute because you absolutely need a lot of micromanagement or you will lose and lose fast. Gotta try to keep that crappy archer alive at 2 health so it can increase your DPS to give you the slight advantage. If you're not causing physical pain to your hand then you're going too slow. I know a guy from Colorado who played professionally and he would regularly do finger exercises outside of gameplay.

Some games are more APM intensive than others. Supreme Commander is pretty low. You can get to top 100 with 50ish cpm(commands per minute, roughly equal to 100apm). I was in the top 50 in team games when I played with 100ish cpm and some of the top 20 players were around 70ish cpm.

Original Age of Empires from 1997 is probably the most APM intensive game in existence. No production queues, no rally points, no attack move, very micro intensive economy, very micro intensive military. The fact that broodwar seems easy in comparison tells something.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a lot more lenient. You get multi-production queues, rally points directly to tasks, global production queue, attack move, auto-build farms, go to work logic for villagers finishing eco buildings, and the list goes on and on. If you want to be the best you still need 300+ apm but nothing is stopping you from playing with under a 100 and being competitive.

In all games you do need the ability to focus on multiple places on the map at the same time though, so that hasn't changed, no matter the RTS you play.

From recent games that I played I would recommend Star Renegades. It's a tbs/rougelike rpg hybrid.

I also mentioned Immortal Realms Vampire Wars on a few occasions. I had fun playing it, but the game is made by a small developer and after release it doesn't see much support while it could still use a few more patches or new content. It's in a solid state, I completed the main campaign, but it's definitely not worth it's base price so wait for sale if you want to try it.

I also recommend keeping an eye on KA: Knights Tale, a dark fantasy squad based (X-com like) tbs game made by the guys who made some pretty solid Total War Warhammer look-alikes back in the day.

But let's not stray too much from the OP in this thread, there are threads for game recommendations on HC.

Yeah.

They said in the interview they want to broaden the audience and are aiming at a different crowd. The approach to have different mechanics between civilisations and still so many civilisations already feels like a much more casual game. I don't think there's any competitive RTS that pulled this off.

So I'd wager it's going to be mechanically less demanding and the gameplay will probably heavily favour city building. But we'll see.

Must say though, the free United States civ event got me back to playing AoE III. It's quite enjoyable as the challanges are easy to complete and I kinda like this sandboxy style of play.

I will also wait for the "Dukes of the East" xpac for AoE II and probably will buy it along with Lords of the West...

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Tutorial: Oasis Map

Made a map tutorial for Oasis random map as that's one that most new players struggle with. How to open and how to read the map.

@blob: Yeah, that seemed a like a nice chill idea with USA. I've never been a big fan of the AoE II DLCs as I play mostly multiplayer these days and they break the balance everytime. It's also quite annoying to come back to a game and be like well, I guess 15 new civs this time to learn so expect to lose all next 30 games to some random unit you've never seen before. The way they did USA definitely seemed a lot better than those. Maybe they will learn from it and apply it to other games in the series as well. ^^
