Age of Empires 1 and ROR strategies and Talk

Here are some of my strategies for AOE.

Elevation – Provides a 25 percent chance that the attacking unit will cause triple damage on each hit when the target is at a lower elevation.

That is a really good thing to know as you could easily kill an enemy unit when your unit has little or very little health.

Iusually get my Archers and position them on top of Elevation and then just keep shooting away until the enemy unit dies, and as units walk slower while travelling up elevation and they walk really fast when travelling down it, I think you would have a much higher chance of killing the enemy unit when you are facing downhill and the enemy unit is coming uphill.
Good thing to know that is

Cliff – Impassable to villagers and military units. Provides a 25 percent chance that the attacking unit will cause triple damage on each hit when the target is on the low side of the cliff.

The cliff is the same kind of scenario except that the enemy unit cannot walk up the cliff, but your units can look down it and keep shooting at the enemy unit until it dies.
That is really good if the enemy unit happens to be a Elephant or a infantry unit, but it is a little worse if the enemy unit happens to be an archer or bowman or something like that. You will still get the bonus but the enemy can also shoot at your unit and if your unit has little health then your unit will probably die from getting hit so much.

OK here are the civilisation bonus (not including ROR)

Assyrian
+40% Archery Range unit fire rate.
Villagers 30% faster.

Babylonian
Double wall and tower hit points.
+30% Priest rejuvenation rate.
+30% stone mining.

Ancient Choson
+80 Long Swordsman and Legion hit points.
+2 tower range.
-30% Priest cost.

Egyptian
+20% gold mining.
+33% Chariot and Chariot Archer hit points.
+3 Priest range.

Greek
Hoplite, Phalanx, and Centurion 30% faster.
War ships 30% faster.

Hittite
Double Stone Thrower, Catapult, Heavy Catapult hit points.
+1 Archery Range unit attack.
+4 war ship range.

Minoan
-30% ship cost.
+2 Composite Bowman range.
+25% Farm production.

Persian
+30% hunting.
-30% Farm production.
War Elephant and Elephant Archer 50% faster.
+50% Trireme fire rate.

Phoenician
-25% War Elephant and Elephant Archer cost.
+65% Catapult Trireme and Juggernaught fire rate.

Shang
-30% Villager cost.
Double wall hit points.

Sumerian
+15 Villager hit points.
+50% Stone Thrower, Catapult, Heavy Catapult fire rate.
Double Farm production.

Yamato
-25% Horse Archers, Scout, Cavalry, Heavy Cavalry, Cataphract cost.
Villagers 30% faster.
+30% ship hit points.

Now from that I would either pick the Persians or the Greeks as the Greeks Phalanx and the Centurion are 30% faster and those units are really tough and strong to have in your army so that is good.
The Persians have 30% hunting increased but they have -30% farming which is bad as farming is crucial and is the best way to get food and also the easiest way. Their Elephants are 50% faster which is excellent and their War triemes have 50% increased fire rate which is also excellent if the map is mainly water then that will be a good advantage for you.
The Shang are also good, I have liked them for some reason because their Walls have double hitpoints and that is really good and if you have your walls like this

----------------        --------------
----------------        --------------

where ---  equals one wall thingy, so then if you make the walls like I said then the walls are double as thick, and then the enemy units will take double as long just to get through it, and also because your walls have double hit points if you plaing as Shang for a civilisation then the enemy units will take three times as long.
A really good tactic when multiplayer or just versin the AI.
But it works mcu better in AOK because of the Gates that you can build which are stronger than walls and they look better and the enemy can't just walk right into your villag but now they must destroy the gate then they can walk through.

Civilisation bonuses in Rise of Rome

Carthaginian
Transports 30% faster.
Fire Galley +25% attack.
Academy units and all elephant units +25% hit points.

Macedonian
Academy units +2 armor vs. Slinger, Ballista, Helepolis, missile weapons.
Units with no range +2 line of sight.
Siege Workshop units cost 50% less.
Units 4 times more resistant to conversion.

Palmyran
Free tribute.
Gold per trade trip doubled.
Villagers cost 50% more, have armor, and work 20% faster.
Camel Riders 25% faster.

Roman
Buildings cost 15% less, except towers, walls and Wonders.
Towers cost 50% less.
Swordsmen attack 33% faster.

Now from these new civilisations that have been introduced in Rise of Rome expansion pack I would probably either the Romans or the Macedonians.
Romans swordsmen attack 33% faster which is a big advantage as you will probably be using swordsmen in your army and with this bonus then they will become a strong unit to have.
Also the Romans Towers cost 50% less which is really good as I love buildings Towers and using them to defend my village.
Macedonians units are 4x more resistant to conversion and that is a BIG bonus for your army as that means that not as many of your units will be converted and you wont lose as much men and the nemy wouldn't have as big of an army when he would convert most or all of your units.
That is a good bonus but I don't know which is better, the 2 really good Civilisations from the original AOE, or the new ones from ROR expansion pack, it can be difficult but it will be a good battle nonetheless with these Civilisations battling each other to the death.

Here are some pictures and descriptions of some of the Greek civilisation that I have taken hope you like:

This picture is of me getting ready for an attack. As you can see I have done the double wall thingy, which is just me building a wall and then building another wall behind it so they both merge together and they become really strong and the enemy have to waste even more time just getting rid of the wall.
I have my Centurion at the front because they are really strong.
I have my Bowmen at the back because they will get easily killed if they are at the front and I have 2 Cavalry or whatever they are called just at the back, I would of had more but I didn't have enough food

Here is another one.
I got my Centurion, and this happened before the first picture just to let you know .
I got my Centurion, my Ballistas or whatever they are called, and my Cavalry or whatever they are called Cataphracts I think .
This ended horribly as all my units were killed easily and I walked away in defeat but later I smashed them as I got heaps of my army and then just charged them towards this enemy village.

That was when my attack went wrong and that was shortly after my second image that I have put up.
All the Catapults and the Ballista Towers kept shooting at my units and I just couldnt ward them off, it was terrifying
Luckily later on I pulverised them and sent them to their graves

This is one of the Photon Men, DONT USE CHEATS GUYS AND GIRLS !!!
It snapped both of the enemy Chariots, that was really early on in the game, as you may tell, but my next picture has a whole group of the Photon men.

Here is the group of Photon men that I told you about.
I didn't use them much afterwards, I just made sure that they kept guard of my base and made sure that nothing unexpected happened

I remember playing AoE for the first time seven years ago. It was the short trial campaign called Reign of the Hittites, and it occupied me for quite a while. I sucked, of course, getting smashed by the AI in the 4th and 5th missions. I can remember it as thought it happened yesterday.

I would freak out when I ran out of stone, since I thought Watch Towers were really good. Unfortunately, I often got decimated when I neglected building an actual army.

I couldn't figure out how to obtain gold...until I saw the glittering stones on a distant island. Sadly, I'd taken too long to get there, for I saw that the precious metals had disappeared upon my arrival.

I just couldn't figure out why the AI could recruit Composite Bowmen when I couldn't. It wasn't until I bought the full game that I understood that certain civs don't have certain soldiers.

And I was crushed since I couldn't upgrade past the Bronze Age. Sigh.

(Ah, the memories. I just wish that the Hittite campaign was still available.)

I think it is avaliable, it might be on the Full version disc, or in the Rise of Rome expansion disc.
Have you got the Rise of rome expansion its good as there are now 4 new civilisations that you can play as.

It's not on the Expansion disc.

Well, I guess it would just be nice to play that campaign again with all the ages enabled. I'd be able to prove myself once again.

The farthest I ever got on ROR is the Roman mission "Zama". The one where you need to destroy the wonder, or something like that. I kinda stopped playing before I got farther.

As far as random games go, I like Coastal, Inland, and especially Gold Mine.

I love playing Deathmatch against the AI it's really quite fun and can be a bit challenging sometimes, because the AI also has alot of resources aswell as you or me has.
It's a really fun game.

I dunno about the ultra-resources aspect of Deathmatch. I've always kind of prefered obtaining the goods rather than starting with them. The same thing goes with those Heroes maps where you start with a fully built town. I guess it's a little thrilling to compete with the AI over resources and the like.

Hmm, yes I remember those nuke warriors.

Well either one suits me fine.
I like starting with the resources but i suppose it is a little more fun when you try to compete against the AI for them like you just said.
Same goes for Heroes of might and magic.

How do you like the Scythe Chariot?

I got all excited about getting them, thinking that they were amazing units. I was slightly disappointed, but they're still kind of good. If only the upgrade wasn't that expensive.

They are alright, they look really cool but I don't really use them much.
We should have a game GuitarGuy and I don't care if you suck.
Do you still have it and if you do play the Age of Empires not the Expansion because I don't have much space left.

I dunno if the game is currently installed, but that can be arranged. So you'd prefer it be the original and not ROR? Haven't played MP before, so I don't know how it works.

Whoops, moments after I typed my post above, I crashed on my sofa.

I might be able to play tonight if it's okay with you. I checked my computer and it turns out I'll have to install the game again. That's not a problem, but I'll need you to help me with setting up the MP game. Is an hour or two from now okay?

I try my best, mostly. I'm okay against the AI, but I don't know about human players.

Of course, it all boils down to how the opening game goes. If I make a dumb move or if the enemy finds me early, I sometimes play really sloppy out of nervousness. Do you think we can ally versus the AI? I think that would work out better and turn out more enjoyable.

Lastly, I haven't played AoE for a long time thanks to Diablo 2 and Heroes 3.
