haha kalac finally got his chance in goal, and he stuffs up miserably!! schwartzer was benched because of some small mistakes in the previous games, although he clearly is the better keeper.. he should be back in goals next game!

We should all hope (perhaps except the swedish members) that the host nation will go through to the quarter final.

I don't think so. Only during the first 20 minutes or so. Argentina dominated the second half completely, but México did much better than I had anticipated. BTW Messi's goal at 90' should not have been ruled out.
Another mistake by a referee that could have been decisive.

It is official: Swiss are the biggest losers of this world cup.
In addition to being lame (i.e. grabbing Shevchenko when he was about to score and not getting a penalty), they lost 3:0 in the penalty shootouts - the worst EVER penalty shootout score. hahahahaha!

Russ, it wasn't shevchenko, it was someone else who's name I can't recall, number 10 tho, shevchenko's number is 7

Plus I think we owe it all to the Ukrainian Goalie who turned out to be the best player in this game

Angelito, you may say that it was never a penelty but was that tackle from Matterazi worth a straight red card.

As much as everyone wants to disagree with me i will say that Italy was the better team on the day. Why? Because if you looks closely, Italy defended with perfection once reduced to 10 men. They dominated the game defensivly while Australia worked the offence. At the end of the day with Australia playing with an extra man, and constantly working the ball in there offensive half, they were rarely able to break Italy's defence. A better team would have used the numerical advantage better.

italy defended well but australia had a very bad attack. viduka doesnt perform ever. kewell injured. cahill didnt get very good delivery. breciano did alright

australia played too conservatively. Aus had the ball and italy were tracking back but australia didnt look for a cutting pass or a long through ball, they passed the ball back to a centre back. it wasnt so much that italy are super defenders, but more that australia arent super attackers.

italy played well. defended well and attacked well with perotta. australia had the power all for most of the game. but they didnt use it right and so italy won. i do feel that if materazzi hadnt been sent off and the penatly hadnt been given, italy would have scored eventually

well done to italy

I agree. Italy was by far the best team during the first half. They had about 4 very big opportunities to score while Australia had none. Materazzi's red card was totally undeserved but so was the penalty. I think that Italy deserved to win.

Please, Italy play much better than England do. The penalty was lucky, but surely the referee was not on their side during the rest of the match.

i believe the result between italy and australia was the right one.. i was devestated when materazzi was sent off, hes lyk my favourite azzurri player and he did not deserve a straight red!! however italy did play much better and im happy that they went through, im proud of australia bt im very much adament that Italy will win the world cup, especially with the defence they have.. One word it brings to mind is impenetrable, aussie threw everything they had at it with very little success. Australia did hav a few close chances however, chipperfield was given 2 almost blank range shots, yet he hit the keeper on consecutive occassions. Buffon is a good keeper, but by kicking it straight at him, he makes his job easy. I was very disappointed Luca Toni didnt score, he was denied by Schwarzers feet which i believe was the best chance of the match. There is no doubt italy dominated and thoroughly deserved the victory, however after materazzis early exit, australia numerical advantage game them more possession, altho i dont feel they were as potent as they could have been. The penalty in my mind was there, maybe not as obvious, but it was there. You cant slide in front and not get the ball and obstruct the player in the box. The player didnt dive, he tried to jump and tripped over his body. Penalty was there and was excellently taken by Totti. I hope we can go much further in the tournament after such an exciting (well in my eyes) game!

I think the game was ugly, and wasn't worth it.
Sure Austalia could have used the 1 man advantage better, but italy is a team with experience and they just stood there on offence.
And then, this guy just fell like a sissy, penalty wasn't there, it's just the famous Italian ability to act like something happened when it didn't.

Anyways, did you see the game between portugal and Netherlands?
It was the funniest game EVER.
Every second of the game I was laughing hard, the refree looked like he drank 3 litres of vodka before the game, he lost track of it when he didn't give a penalty to Holland, he just lost it ever since, I just fell on the floor when he gave the Portugese Goalie a yellow card. LOL.
The Chair of FIFA said that Valentin Ivanov deserves a yellow card himself, he was the dumbest Refree ever.

The ref. on Ukraine's game tho, I liked him alot, he was fair, not always though, but he didn't hand it penalties and he allowed the teams to play normally, he just saw that they are equal in power almost, so handing a penalty would have ruined the game and he knew it. He didn't give many yellow cards and none of the teams tried to argue when there was a faul, it was a quite good game.
I'd give the refree a 4/5.
