CONTEST- Contestant Thread

You awake in a circular, dark, stone dungeon, with cold, thick walls, cobblestone floor and rusty iron chains dangling ominously from the ceiling. There are six other people, in the room, lying down as you were... You have your clothes, your items, and a painful throb that you just can't quite seem to locate. Other than that, you have no idea how you got here, and who the other people are.

A voice speaks up.

"Welcome, Contestants."

"While you are in here your lives will be limited in length and in constant danger. If you wish to live, I suggest you make haste out of my Castle... now. But be warned."

The voice vanished. You have to get out.

JON:

Jon woke up suddenly, drew his blade and tried to jump to his feet, only to be twisted back down onto the cold, hard stone floor by the restrictions of his bound feet.

His sharp, withheld movement had hurt his leg.
"Dammit.." In frustration, he pulled the knife to the rope on his ankles.

He stopped before he could sever the bonds.
A dark voice spoke up, and Jon stayed perfectly still, even in his awkward position.

"Welcome, Contestants." The voice resounds from noplace in particular, just seemed to be everywhere, equally, echoing in what sounded like long halls following. The voice was deep and commanding, and somehow threatening. Or so he thought.

"While you are in here your lives will be limited in length and in constant danger. If you wish to live, I suggest you make haste out of my Castle... now. But be warned."
And just like that the voice was gone, like a fire, extinguished, and likewise Jon felt colder, and a deep throb inside of him pounded in coincidence.

With that, he cut the ropes with one swift, decisive blow and leapt to his feet. As long as he was stuck here, he might as well find out what other fools and madmen he was trapped with, and help them up, at least.

Jon was strangely unstartled by his environment, and understood it with reasoning. They must escape to live... he'd been there before. Trust would be important. A person can trust you without you reciprocating that, and helping them out would be a good way to start that off.

Robert:

Cold...and wet...what is going...where...AHHHHHHH!  These were Robert's first thoughts as he awoke laying face down on a cold stone floor.  The room was dark as night except for a small amount of light emitting from the ceiling.  Just enough for Robert to realize he was completely bound with his mouth gagged.  From somewhere in the distance he could hear the echo of a voice instructing him to get out while he still can.  What is that supposed to mean?  "Dear God!  Am I going to be killed?"
Is what he wanted to say however with his mouth wrapped tightly in cloth rags it came out as a muffled, "Bah Gah!  Ah Ah Gahgaa muff kaad?"
If only he could reach his dagger in his boot.  Surprisingly his captors had left him with it, his belt as well.  Unusual however perhaps they had never attempted to hold an assassin captive before.  They had done a good job restraining him as was clear by his tight bonds.
"One should never leave a professional killer with his tools though."
His tools, that is how Robert always referred to his weapons.  He considered his job...his life as a professional trade and treated every aspect as such.  It had been ages since he had actually been caught though.  He was getting up there in age but that hadn't slowed him down a bit.  Not until now.
To his right he heard some shuffling around, then the sound of a blade cutting through rope.  There was another besides himself.  With a quick rocking movement Robert spun around on his back and began calling out with muffled pleas for help.  This was unlike Robert.  He would never beg another for help like this but desperate times call for desperate measures.  Suddenly he heard other voices.  Some muffled like himself and others crying out for help .  Perhaps he should listen to the phantom voice he heard earlier and get out.  Of course that may have just been in his mind.  Either way he would need the help of the stranger with the blade.

JON:

There was a muffled cry to his left. A middle-aged man, flustered by his newly discovered captivity. He had been gagged, unlike Jon, and his hands tied. Jon smiled, and crawled over, as he did not yet have the strength, or the courage, to stand upright.

He severed the rope tying the man's hands, and before he took off the cloth tied over the man's mouth, he held out a hand and winked.

"Jon. Looks like we're in this together." The man took his hand, and then took off the cloth over his mouth.

Help him enough, but not more than necessary. That was the way to take it.

Hunter

Sudden uncomfortness and wetness made Hunter open his eyes. Lying face first in a dirty puddle of water he quickly woke up and turned on his back. He noticed that his hands and legs were both bound but nothing that he couldn't handle, he was in many worse cased scenarios before.

Looking around he noticed 2 men already on their feet and moving towards him, making a stay away jest with his 2 hands Hunter sincked his teeth in the ropes that bound his hands and with only 3 bites cut them loose, dentures are a sure privilage to have. Next he pulled a small nicely crafted dagger out of his sleeve and sliced the ropes off his legs too.

Finally he was up on his feet making himself familiar with the surroundings, it was sure dark and wet and 4 more people were still lying on the ground unconcious.

"I do not require your help, that means that I do not owe you anything and you do not owe me jack too. Now can someone of you good fellas tell me what are we supposed to do here?" Hunter asked the 2 standing men checking himself for all of his stuff and finding the good news that they are all still remain in their places.

Shae
It was the movement that woke her.  Strange figures in the shadows were slowly rising from the ground and walking around the room.  She was careful not to make any sudden movements herself, but instead surveyed the surroundings, her eyes gradually growing accustomed to the lack of light.

The frosty cobblestones beneath her were a comfort, relieving the dull ache in her head and rousing her consciousness.  Where was she? Her thoughts were answered by the voices of men… they were prisoners in a castle and needed to escape. Well duh.  Carefully she pulled her hands free from the rags that bound them, she must have been drugged somehow, and reached inside her skirt to make sure she had not lost her precious cargo.  It was intact, the rest was just part of the journey.

The cold was biting into her breastplate and she was grateful for the skins that covered her torso.  She sat up, untied the rest of her bindings, and slipped her blade from within her boot.  A small jewel in-crested blade with a large serrated edge that had been given to her so many years ago, she smiled as she remembered the moment.  Sensing no imminent danger from her cellmates she looked around the ceiling trying to determine if the faint glow of light was natural.

JON:

The others were awaking one by one. 'I was first..' Thought Jon. As usual.

Another man awoke on the other side of the room. Jon couldn't see him in the dim light... he stepped closer to take a look. "Dammit.." His eyes were hurting... he raised an arm up above his head, fist clenched, then opened it up. A small ball of green light lit up the whole room. "Better."

He could see now, and Jon couldn't help but smirk. This man was biting his way out. 'How primitive..'

"I do not require your help, that means that I do not owe you anything and you do not owe me jack too. Now can someone of you good fellas tell me what are we supposed to do here?" The man said as he stood up, remaining anonymous for now. That was alright by Jon. Arrogance, and independence... two traits that seemed to negate his early-man escape routine.

"Well, from what I've gathered, it looks like we've been dragged here by some fool with a god-complex, locked up only to make our way out of here. Which might be hard, seeing as there are no doors... Jon, by the way. And you would be?" He asked, in mock elegance.

But it was another prisoner who.. attracted, his attention.
A fair lady was awakening. His white teeth flashed a grin. Someone who didn't look like a potential prisoner.

Including himself.

Robert:

How many are down here with me?  Robert thought this to himself as two more people awoke.  That made four so far and he could still hear more voices from the other corners of the room.  Suddenly a bright green flash lit up the room allowing Robert to survey his surroundings quickly.  No doors or windows.  Damn.  There was a grate of some kind in the ceiling which was what the small amount of light poured through.  He also noticed the other two additions to 'the party'.
Robert stood up suddenly and began walking around the room feeling the walls for any abnormality.  If they were put in here there had to have been some form of entryway.  Unless of course this was the work of magic.  Goddamned magic seemed to bring nothing but ill luck to Robert these days.  His last client had been some sort of wizard after another who had stole some magical dohicky or another.  The mark (what he called all of his pre-kills) was quite adept at advanced fire magic.  Fire was what Robert expected, what he hadn't been told was that Advanced Fire wielders can convert their flaming magic into pure electrical energy.  Needless to say that was a rather "shocking" experience.  But it would seem the man who had cut his bindings...what was his name, Don...Ron...No Jon that was it.  He obviously had some magical talent.  Robert certainly couldn't emit green light from his hands.
"Say stranger, what might you be doing?, asked a curious Jon.
Well speak of the devil.  Should he tell him?  If he played with magic Robert was likely to get burned...again.  However it seemed they were all stuck in the same predicament.
"Just looking around.  One should always know their surroundings.  Name is Robert by the way."
Jon nodded at him and then winked to the female captive.  She carried a blade in her boot as well.  Interesting.  It seemed to have jewels inlaid in the handle.  Robert had given up thievery for the most part but that blade would make a nice addition to his collection...that is if he ever got out of this dank hell hole.

Castan

Castan had been lying face down in a corner, drifting in and out of conciousness. the last time he had been consious he had heard "Welcome Contestants" quite clearly, but slipped back into unconciousness soon after. Castan had been concious for several minutes now but during that time all he had heard were moans and other peoples unclear voices.

He has been in total darkness and he was sure that these other people has no idea that he was even among them. without warning the room was illuminated with a soft green glow, radiating from someones hand. a magician.

Castan was loosely bound at the feet and wrists and he simply wriggled out of his bonds. He has a pounding headache and as Castan scratched his head, he felt a sore. a very large sore. he deduced that he had been hit over the head, giving him memory loss. so now he knew why he couldnt remember anything from the last few weeks of his life.

but there was no time to lie around thinking. Castan stood up and checked what was on him. he had a knife in each boot, handy he thought. he also had several more knifves and daggers down his sleeves and in his shirt.  got up and walked to the the main source of light in the room. when he got there he saw the magician about to speak. but Castan spoke first

"The names Castan" he said rather quickly. he then lied on the ground and relaxed while the other people around the room made thier way towards the light

Shae

The room was growing noisier. Men… Light.  Shae tuned out the voices and pressed her eyelids solidly against her cheeks, concentrating on the space around her.  She felt for discrepancies between what appeared to be reality and the physical truth.  With fingers purposefully stroking the sphere of amber set in her bodice, pressing it against her Solar Plexus, she searched.  She could feel the six other bodies, could hear the blood pumping through their veins, she was searching in the wrong place.  Tilting her head forward and relaxing her shoulders she tried again, this time concentrating harder on the rhythm of her own heart, beating slowly.

Then she felt it.  The cold stones that had left their imprint on her flesh began to thaw.  She opened her eyes and studied the pattern of the cobblestones.   Why hadn’t she noticed this before… The floor itself was a mosaic of intricate patterns.  Seven circles.  Each circle had a unique design, the one nearest to her was a simple clockwise spiral; calling her, inviting her.

Reaching behind her back to retrieve the honed Treant stake from it’s chamber in her armour, she focused on the spiral.  She had little time to act, some of the men had noticed her and were heading in her direction.  She shifted into a crouch position and then rolled forward towards the pattern, this manoeuvre also reminding her of another time and place.  Stopping in the centre of the coiled circle she placed her clenched hands and bare knees on the hot spots, her body twisting to meet the necessary sites on the cobblestone floor.

A single chime and a flash of blue resonated briefly as the portal opened beneath her and she fell.  Shae looked up to see the gateway closing just as quickly above her.   She was falling still…

Hunter

Sudden intense lighting of the room made it easier for him to look around.

"Well, from what I've gathered, it looks like we've been dragged here by some fool with a god-complex, locked up only to make our way out of here. Which might be hard, seeing as there are no doors... Jon, by the way. And you would be?"

"Yes yes, no doors is always bad. But not the worst by far, by messing around with me this god-complex foo would learn that playing with fire can be painfull. The name is Hunter and I just can't wait to bash his head in some wall." Hunter smirked, with all the years he had spent as only the second to the thieves guild master he slaughtered many people bad or good didn't matter to him.

He expected a similar answer, this is going to be another of those days you wish that you have never left your bed. He turned his gaze to a woman who was cutting the ropes that bound her feet, women are just everywhere this days damnit! Hunter couldn't count the times that women have caused him unconviniences and problems and here is one right there, what a crappy luck.

Next a flash of blue and the woman vanished into the floor, so that is where the damn exit he thought to himself. The floor has gotten all of his attention, he was a quick thinker and his eyes stopped on a stone with a triangle mark on it. Wasting no time fooling around a quick wave of an arm filled half of the room with intense dark smoke, placing himself inside the triangle he heard a strange sound. A flash of black sparked and a portal sucked him in...

"Yes yes, no doors is always bad. But not the worst by far, by messing around with me this god-complex foo would learn that playing with fire can be painfull. The name is Hunter and I just can't wait to bash his head in some wall." Hunter replied.

Jon began to agree,
And then there was a flash of light, and he felt a spark as the tension escalated. He looked across to it's source.
Shae... where was she?
He looked at Robert, who was still recovering from the blinding light.
Then Hunter. He was the one who was worrying. Hunter ran across the room to where Shae had been sitting, and seemed to vanish into the floor.

Jon concealed his shock.
"Hunter, Shae!" He said, examining the floor where they had disappeared. It was a concentric spiral, typical of ancient Lialid magic portals. How did he not notice this before? No doors, no breaches in the walls... the escape had to be a test of intelligence, not brawn.

"Oi Robert, they've escaped down this portal. Quick, we should wake the others and follow... I don't know if you heard that voice, but we need to stick together, whether those selfish fools like it or not. Give us a hand Castan, there's time for acquaintance later."

Jon ran over to the last two men lying nearby, in attempt to awake them from their slumber.

"Wake up boys, we've got a ride out of here."
Jon squeezed the handle of his blade behind his back, his muscles flexing in consequence.

Not a good start from that lady Shae. Not a good one at all.

Eohl:

" Argh, this slippery floor! " Eohl spat on the oozy corner of the room.

He was trying to stand up for at least half an hour already, but yet in vain. He could not control his body normally, as the shackles that bound his movements have only just disappeared.

" What happened to me?! "

His mind was in a complete mess. How did he come here? What he solely remembered was the void he fell into when he touched the sparkling gem he was about to steal... And the voice... The voice of an old man... A puppeteer, who is toying with his life...

BLAM! He fell onto the ground again, this time with even more pain coming this way.

" Finally, someone caught me. " Eohl smiled to himself. " An elven thief caught in action, ha! Now that IS unusual... Noises... Dim light... Dungeon... Ah well, I am pretty used to this... "

He stood up, stepped into the shadows which he called his "Haven", and looked around to see how others were faring. As an elf, Eohl could see in the dark much better than humans, but his sight had yet not recovered.

He was surprised that he had brought his backpack with him. Even though, Eohl was not sure what was kept within.

Elf's backpack was almost empty, save for a few potions, some arrows and his blade and lockpicks.

Swish! A touch of freezing air touched Eohl's face. A man was approaching them, with a long sword behind his back.

" Wake up boys, we've got a ride out of here. "

Eohl quickly lay flat on the floor, pretending that he was sleeping. He unconsciously took out his blade, with such a quick movement that the foreigner didn't even see, and arose.

" Who are you, people? " The thief jumped behind him, the sword pointing straight at his head. " Introduce yourself! "

The cold, sharp elven metal pressed up against his skin, cutting it slightly.

Jon coolly took the mans hand and pushed it down and away.
"There is no need for that.." Jon smiled and shut his eyes. The elf was still behind him. "Unless you make need.

Jon turned and looked him in the eye. That would put him off, make him a little uncomfortable, but not hostile.
"My name is Jon, and unless you want to stay trapped in this god-forsaken room, I suggest you come to your senses and follow us. We're prisoners, like yourself..."
Jon paused to let the elf realize this. He had just awoken.

"...but we've found a way out."

He walked over to the portal on the ground, and knelt by the spiral pattern.

"Now does anyone here know advanced transfiguration magic?" He frowned. Hunter and Shae had known how to use the portal instantly... Jon did not know himself, but he could ask someone who does.

Unless one of the other captives knew the spells needed,
he would have to summon a Familiar.

Robert:

"I may know a little something.", Robert replied with disgust on his face.  It was obvious to those standing there that he regretted mentioning it.

Jon turned to Robert and gave him a crafty smile asking,"What little do you know if I might ask?  You know, since our lives may depend on it.  But there is no rush.  Really, take your time.

How dare this stranger speak to him like that.  This man may have helped release him from his bindings...something he had to do for no one else.  Of all the people captive in this dank room Robert immediately assumed he was the craftiest if not the smartest.  It had never occurred to him that he was the only one that required help.  Now the man that had done the helping stood before him asking for a return of the favor.  Robert's first instinct was to take back what he had said as a simple joke...although it wasn't very funny.  Grrrrrrr, even an assassin has morals sometimes.
Dammit, why did I have to open my mouth?  Robert thought this to himself before slowly nodding his head in agreement.

"Good, it's settled then.  You use your hocus pocus and open that portal back up." , Jon replied seeming satisfied with himself.

All the while the elfin stranger stood back from the other two, knife still drawn and ready to stab the first person who dared approach him.  Robert looked at this man and wondered to himself.  It was almost as if he had seen him somewhere before.  Surely not a client.  Elves rarely had a need for assassins.  They all thought too highly of themselves.  Even the dark elves whose standards were far from orderly felt...no, knew they were better then humans.  This one that stood before him looked like a mixed breed though.  Perhaps an outcast.  His hands bared the markings of a thief and his stance was unusual as well.  Hmmm, for another time though.  For now Robert had to figure a way out of this mess he had gotten himself into.

"You know it's not guaranteed to work.  I picked up the trick when I was much younger.  There must be other alternatives to using magic.  Perhaps if I feel the walls again."  At this point Jon gave him a look of either anger or disappointment.  It was difficult to read his face in the lack of light.  With some hesitation Robert continued, "God I hate my life sometimes.  Fine, but I warn you this will be risky.  While I cannot open the original portal I can create an alternate route."

This time the elf spoke up, "How might I ask?  You look more like a criminal to me and I know them when I see them."

Robert put his head down allowing his long hair to cover his face"Through darkness.  An alternate pathway that few know much about.  I can open a doorway but we'll have to stay close.  If you wander you are bound to get lost.  If that happens then all hope for your life will disappear."

"Darkness...right.  Maybe you didn't notice but this whole room is dark save the small patch of light coming from God knows where." Jon replied with a hint of anger in his voice.  The other man who had called himself Castan had chuckled at this.

"Fine, I didn't wish to use it anyway.  I'm not a wizard so the craft of one is not one of my favorite things to do.  Besides, the creatures that dwell there were put there for a reason.  Soulless beings overcome with the darkness can be a real pain to deal with.  Powerful little bastards too."

At this Jon brightened up.  A smile slowly crept back onto his face as he turned back to Robert.  "Well now I didn't say we wouldn't try.  Besides, I recall lending you a hand earlier."  The sheer thought of having one of these creatures Robert had mentioned intrigued Jon.

Robert breathed deeply and muttered to himself cursing a few times for good measure.  "Fine, but as I mentioned you must follow me.  If you wander off I will not hesitate to leave you.  As of now I will repay what I owe but know this, you mean nothing but a debt to me."

"What about me?", the elf asked rather casually.

"Find your own way elf.  I owe you nothing.  Besides, I doubt you have anything of value to me.  You hardly look like the type of thief you seem to think you are.  Yes I know you are a thief.  Just as you can tell I am a shady fellow so I can see it in you."  With that said Robert walked a few feet forward and began waving his right hand in a circular motion.  The fact that he had not used this ability recently was a lie.  Being an assassin could be tedious work, but if one is able to travel through unseen pathways then he is nigh uncatchable.

"Good man. My magic is only in the School of Conjuration... I know little of transmutation and the dark arts." Good. He would need not waste energy on summoning an Arch to open the portal.

Jon looked up at the grating in the ceiling. He had cut off the nether light, which cast the room back into darkness, and thin rays of light struggled through above.

"This light.. it's natural, from the Jord sun, I think. We must be in the north. Are you aware that your pathway should take us outdoors? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that makes it more difficult, with the light?"

The cautious elf must have realized there was no more danger, because he lowered his blade.

"Then we will have escaped?" The elf asked.

"I doubt it. Probably some form of courtyard... another test, perhaps? Like this one." The elf thief was disappointed.

Jon looked at him, and then at Robert, who was concentrating on the rituals required for the portal. Then back at the elf, he said "I think we should stick together, Robert. I don't know, but if what lies beyond is anything like this, we'll need all the help we can get. We're venturing into the unknown, so to speak.
But.... you're the one with the spells."

Hunter

Again a flash of black aura in the lightened room, it revealed Hunter kneeling on all four on the triangle stone where he first disappeared. The man who was used to deal fear to others has now understood the way it feels being on the other end of it. It was plain horrible, the sights he has seen only in about 10 minutes were more disturbing than he saw his entire life...

Wiping blood off his lips he looked at the other men standing in the room discussing something. There were the three from before and another one he hasn't seen before. Slowly getting on his feet trying to get himself pumped up again he adressed the others.

"I'm not going there alone again, to think of it now... I may need your help and you will need mine. What is out there is... Well you will see for yourselves but now you can trust me that it is pretty bad neighbourhood, with some wicked next door neighbours." He smiled, even in this kinds of situations he never lost his sense of humour.

There was nothing more for him to do but to trust those 4 people he had just seen for the first time in his life and pray that something good will come out of this.

"I'm sorry to interrupt your meaningfull discussion, what was it about? Maybe I can help..."

Shae

Shae was falling fast, she knew that her landing would be troublesome, and yet she had no choice.  The blue vortex that had consumed her was subsiding and she could see light below.  Gradually the rippled matter disintegrated and the landscape was revealed.  There was just enough time to prepare her limbs for a collision with grasslands.  Thankfully the soil was damp, heavy rain had helped soften the blow, yet it would still take time to heal the subsequent bruising.

The sun was just beginning to shift below the mountains in the west, she needed to find shelter.  Her thoughts drifted to those she left behind in the circular room.  Had she done the right thing?  Over the years Shae had learnt trust no one, to rely only on herself, and she still had to deliver the cargo to Hashar.  She needed time to think, to assess her predicament, and consider all the variables.  They had seemed friendly enough…  Looking around she could see that the grasslands were no more than a lawn, manicured and nourished for the master of the castle.  She sensed a magical barrier cordoning the area from the west and surmised that this could all be merely a vivid illusion. A loud screech cut her thinking short and she ran, suppressing the pain, into a cavern and out of the sunlight…

A wave of darkness overtook the room and then Hunter reappeared where he had left, coming back with heavy breathing and sweat on his brow.

"I'm sorry to interrupt your meaningfull discussion, what was it about? Maybe I can help..." He asked. He had said that he returned for help, being unable to make it on his own. Considering the events already taken place so far, this was not as surprising as it should have been.

"So you've decided to come back, have you?" Jon asked. "Well, we could use your help... as long as you don't run off again, you won't get such a... warm welcome next time." He nodded to Robert. "Don't disturb him. He's getting us outside this cell, into what I think is some sort of courtyard. Where exactly did you go?"

Eohl:

Eohl held his bow at ready, still pondering whether to relese the arrow straight into the head of the man, who seemed to call himself Robert.

" How could he ever think that I am a lesser being than he is? "

The elf was getting angry and could not properly control his emotions, so he withdrew to the shadowy corners nearby, where he would look like an ordinary wall. The chattering about the magic of various kind made him puke. Bah, magic! He even hated the word itself.

He sat down and took out his blade. The silvery sword gave off strange metallic grey light. He was rewarded with this sword for his efforts in thieves' guild. When he held it in his hands for the first time, his heart burst into tears -- it felt as if he had it all his life. And he was quite right. It was his father's blade.

Eohl shook his head, trying to make these unhappy thoughts disappear. He had not seen his father for more than half of his life -- which was long enough to witness most wars of the era. He had more important things to do these days.

" Robert, I do not think you would like to end up with an arrow in your arse, nor should I want to have my neck cut by your blade... " He gazed at Rob, as he passed by. " Jon, others, I shall not disturb you. I disregard magic, but I do not underestimate a magician. If my skills prove useful, ask me. " Eohl took one of his lockpicks out of the pocket (they looked permeable, as if almost nothing was there). " For now, I shall gad along with you. "

He smiled and put his hand on Jon's shoulder - a brother-like feeling enchained his spirit and he simply could not resist the will of his body...
