It is a long journey... 
Just follow the road and you should be fine. There are a few deadends but you can simply turn back when you hit one.

Well, I did not do the mission 5 yet but if I understand the replies in this forum, I guess you have to find all the artifacts and bring them to the seer to obtain a couple of phoenix and then you are supposed to be able to beat Nicolaļ once and for all.
Anyway, surely my good friend maltz will correct me if I am wrong and help you in a way or another

You have to kill all the Spectral Dragons to make it 'light' again, then you can destroy Nicolai once and for all.

Mission 3:
Is it just me, or you can finish garrison quest just by putting some of remaining troops from your first assault.
50 Elder Druids, 30 Silver Unicorns (both easy to preserve, at least on normal) and 10 Emerald Dragons instead of the Green ones.
Of course, I usually don't do that, but leave let's say 5 emeralds, while 5 green ones get produced in 3 weeks to complete the quest.
And bit later, after I take other elven city, I go back and take remaining Emeralds, after remaining 5 green ones get built.

mission 3 question (on hard difficiulty):
so um its like month 3. the attacking armies keep getting BIGGER AND BIGGER! will they keep increasing in size? will the attacks ever stop (when i meet the garrison objective)????
also i've almost saved enough for a dragon dwelling. i've used a hired hero to explore main continent and flag mines. but then a big bad blue necro came after me. he eventually followed me back to the elven capital. he has:
120 master hunters
31 spectral dragons
60 archliches
40 wraiths
800 skeleton archers
and some other stuff
ugh
..........
i probably could beat this, but i dont have ressurrection so i'll take heavy losses. is the blue necro supposed to attack? or do they only become active when you land on the main continent? i mean i'm trying to figure out whether or not i should load to an earlier save so that the necro doesnt follow me back to the capital, whether or not these purple necro waves ever ends, etc....

On mission 3 you've to build a large enough garrison so you can handle the attacks on this main castle, as you've noticed the waves are getting better and better so you have to move quick and take over enemy castles. It's also important that you free the Heroes, they both have an ability called Elven Luck, this means every strike a creature does goes together with luck aka double damage.
Just take over the 2nd Sylvan castle town of that map asap, then it should be doable.

As far as I know, first fall of one of the garrions, and later, retaking of it will trigger future appearance of red army.
Personally, I never got another undead army attack me after fist fall of garrison.

where are the sylvan heroes located? i restarted mission, hired a second hero, gave him my 20 emeralds, and he took over the sylvan town, while findan stayed at home and defended. but i havent found any prisons yet

One is located in the underground and one in the left low corner. But it will take some time to get there.

blagh. so i had restarted level 3 and was doing well. i hired an elven hero, and gave him 20 emerald dragons, all my remaining druid elders, and some treants for good measure. so i took over the other sylvan town by first week. however, findan was getting pounded, specifically, his master hunters were taking a beating AND I DID NOT HAVE RESSURECTION.
AGH. and as time is ticking, the waves are wearing down my master hunters, and now teal is attacking me and his lich stack wiped out practically all my master hunters because he got good luck on his attack 
UGH. and what's worse, the arrow volley special of findan is GARBAGE because who does he target? The skeleton archers? The liches? NO they target the USELESS SKELETONS, the SMALLEST THREAT. and who do the towers shoot? THE STUPID GHOSTS. AND THEY END UP MISSING. UGH. SO STUPID.
do i need to restart the stupid mission just so i can get stupid ressurection just so i can beat it?!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH
i hate this level. but at least i am getting a challenge on hard difficulty. normal had been too easy.
alteratnively, i'm thinking of restarting, and instead of giving my second elven hero so many troops, to instead just give him 20 emerald dragons, which should be enough to take the second sylvan town.
hmmm....
