I thought the book it was based off was a work of fiction.
That's what I heard anyway.  I could be wrong.
The idea of it never really excited me so I chose not to read it.  I don't know about the movie though.  Tom Hanks is a good actor so that may interest me enough to get a ripped copy for two bucks out of the subway from a chinese lady and her son.

I probably won't read the book nor watch the film because other sources have ruined the mysteries before I even had the chance to read it.

da vinci code is a very bad book

it has cause all this controversy

just leave it alone

there is a reason why they put the da vinci code in the fiction section of the library and not on the religious shelf

its made up. i wish the media would just leave it alone

boy do i hate the news

I found DVC interesting and addictive fiction, surely worth reading. Adventures and mysteries , alternative history and religion. And a little cultural programme .

Truth? Well, everything may be.

Lord_Pc, why do you find it bad?

What about "Demons and Angels"?

The book is fiction just like The Matrix. I think both of those are good because they deal with very interesting questions that open your mind to different possibilities.
If you want to watch something that's not a fiction - watch a non-American documentary

DVC is just another of those "supah books". The plot is just pathetic, characters seem to be retarded and the whole book is just a very long piece of ****. The thing is, that everything that is even a bit touching the theme of religion will sell good. And Brown, even though he is one of the worst writers, knew it. He was **** smart, knowing that a book touching the theme of Christianity will be a bestseller. Very smart, but shouldn't be a writer.

Another example would be that scientology religion.  The guy who invented it, Ron L. Hubbard, was a known science-fiction author yet there was a whole following of people who believed that God was really an alien from another planet and that his mustard induced farts would destroy the world or some crap like that.  If there are people out there who actually buy into that then hell, I'm sure there's already a Da Vinci Cult.

I read and really enjoyed DVC, found it thought provoking and interesting.  It did however not make me question my christianity or Catholicism.  The thing I most like about DVC was it introduced me to Dan Brown and I have read all 4 of his novels and enjoyed them all.

Well, but the version about M/M and Jesus descendants and stuff doesn't seem unbelievable and baseless, is it? For the person not keen on history and religion, at least. Well, might Dan Brown haven't even invented this, but used an existing theory? (not an offense) Wonder how this looks in the I's of a historian.
"Demons and Angels" and "Digital Fortress" show that Dan doesn't care much about corresponding to facts and learning things he's writing about - probably being sure that most ppl don't notice or care, too . Yet, he might have better knowledge of (and respect to) history and culture than of physics and computers.

In my honest opinion the Da Vinci Code movie will only be a success due to ticket sales. I fear that due to the controversy that most reviews given to the film will not be good indeed.

Some of the issues Dan Brown "reveals" have been already covered before even though those things haven't been in the knowledge of the large audience which draw people to read the book.

People seem to find Dan Brown entertaining and I think behind the success of Da Vinci Code is the fact that people want to mystify reality and see the larger picture and some kind of "great plan" behind everything.

People seek meaning to their life and one way is to feel part of something that is "behind the curtain".

I find the whole thing quite dull. Even though I welcome a different approach to study of history at least it's better than just say that everything has been written this far is right. Believing into Bible or Da Vinci code doesn't make any of it's stories more true than they really are.

Yes.

And BTW, how do you find the language of the book? My mother finds it awful (bad), and I noticed the same in the beginning. Or it's the translator's issue?

Hmm . . .

I'm surprised PrivateHudson hasn't posted in this thread yet. It might be that he's invested in the same topic on a different forum. Maybe he feels this place doesn't offer much of an audience for this discussion.

I recall him saying that he believed books have been intentionally removed from the bible.

I personally believe it's possible but without any solid proof.

oh boy...

what is it they say about guns? ...ah yes... "guns don't kill people, people kill people"

now replace guns with books... add a bit about each person's beliefs and there you have it...

on another note, it is known that christianity, as i guess most religions, have changed over the years (and mind you, i don't say evolved, cause i don't find the changes to be improvements) ...sometimes by necessity, other times by the arrogance of men that chose the "best way" for the herd...

- is DVC a good book/movie?
- that is for each of us to say, a matter of opinion, although i expect the opinions about the book to be slightly better

- is what said in DVC something new?
- hardly, such theories are around for at least a hundred years ...if not since the dawn of christianity

- can DVC shake someone's belief?
- if yes, then you simply did not believe to begin with...

it is easy to point fingers and shake off responsibility... people do it every day... and sometimes, they get locked up for it ("the devil made me do it")

Well  I didn't like the movie cause I read the book before and the film seemed boring also Tom Hanks is a good actor no offense but he shouldn't have played this role, he just doesn't go so well with the character he plays.
As for the question whether i believe this is truth, then no and I don't understand why the church makes a fool of itself trying to forbid this book and this movie.
