I don't know why, i find necropolis much more powerful, but I just love the haven style of play. Especially charging with palladins, aiding them with light magic and so on. And they have the highest chance of getting high 'might' statistics. Knights, when leveling up, most often accumulate defence skill points, and second most often attack points.
They're truly Might users, with some aid of light magic and that's what i love about it.
In H3 i liked Stronghold the most for the very same reasons

haven. The unit design suits my taste Too bad those priest/inquisitor dudes don't do much damage. (just like zealots in h3 :/) i like inferno too, for the same reason.

Academy seems a bit too strong for me to play, and I dislike overpowered nations. I may be wrong, since I still didn't play much yet

I liked necropolis in h3, but here, only the liches and wights' design looks good to me. Vampires' appearance annoys me ~~

Sylvan seems fun, but I hate elves, so I won't play it.

As for dungeon, seems to be expensive, and playing expensive towns is frustrating on higher diff

Sylvan is the best.

Look at the trees they have 181hp, that as good as a level 7.

Their dragon has the fastest initative, for level 7.

Necropolis!

1. Necropolis is my favorite! Spectral Dragon is way too weak but you get them 3 in week. Wraith is good and it look great. Archliches are deathly! Vampire Lord is my favorites. Not so strong but No enemy retalation and Life Drain is so nice compination! Spectre's are only here to dodge bullets! Plague Zombies are useless! Necromancers real power lies on Skeleton Archers. Whit big map and lots of "wandering" creatures around. Easy to make Legions of Skeleton Archers. One shot one kill. BANG! Also Puppet Master (Dark) and Raise Dead (Summon) magic are very useful. Hero Vladimir is key to victory!

2. Sylvan is close second. Emerald Dragon has blazing initiative! Ancient Treant. How on earth you kill these tree bears? Max 5 in population is more than enough! Silver Unicorn is ok fighter. Uni's blinding attack is handy. Druid Elders are fearsome creatures. Master Hunter is greatest lv3 unit by far! Enemy has to block them but how? The big tree fellow is still there! War Dancers combo are only good think about them. Sprites are fast, casters and has no enemy retalation. There is no real weakness in Sylvans army. I prefer strong hero like Ossir.

3. Dungeon is third in my list. Black Dragons magic immunity and very strong attack + damage makes this creatures unstoppable! Shadow Matriarch is solid shooter. Ugh! Deep Hydras low iniative makes the six head attack useless! Only good hydra is in HoMM II. Well Grim Raider is good fighter. Minotaur Guards health and double attack is makes it stronger fighter. Iniative and defense is minus. Blood Fury is great unit. Extremely fast whit hit and run ability! Favorite lv2 unite in the game. Assassin is strong shooter whit great initiative and poisonous attack. Population is low thoug. Direct damage whit Dungeon hero and extra damage added to Implosion! Sorgal, Sinitar or Eruina is all good hero choises.

4. Haven is also good choise. Archangels are probably best lv7 creatures. Recurrect Alliens ability is vital. Paladins are also strong force. Thanks to jousting bonus. Inquisitor health is good for lv5 shooter. Imperial Griffins are fast and Battle Dive ability is handy. Squires shiel allies ability is great! Huge amount of Marksmans and blessing they make serious damage. Weak greatures still. Hurray for weakling Peasants! Don't upgrade them to Conscript. Taxpayer is only good think what they know. Haven's heroes are only based primary skills to Attack and Defense. Magic schools aren't nessesary for them. Heroes i prefer Klaus and second choise is Dougal.

5. Inferno is below average. Arch Devils looks great! Summon Pit Lords ability is good. Pit Lords Fire Magics are devastating. Makes enemy harded to defend the shooters. Nightmares are fast attacking creatures. Succubus Mistress Chain Shot is awesome. Cerberus is aggressive attacker but weak defender. Horned Overseer is useless creature my opinion. Familiar fast but very weak creatures. Hundreds of this makes enemy heros mana drop to zero Problem of Inferno heroes is that defense is allways low. Main primary skill is Attack but Knowlage is allways close second and that's not good at all!  Nebiros or Marbas are my choise for the hero.

6. Academy is worst! Titans are good 7lv creatures. Rakshasa Raja is great defender for the shooters. Djinn Sultan hits hard dies fast. Archmage is real good whit nice Magic Attack. You can't defend them so good but they are good shooters whit no range penalty. Steel Golem is defender but it's so SLOW! Obsidian Gargoyles looks ridiculous! Fast creature whit low At/Damage. Master Gremlins are ok lv1 shooters. Also can repair the Golems. The Academy creatures are good but the heroes are bad. Best hope is making Wizard a good spell caster. Arcane Omniscience skill is little hard to get! But let's imagine battle againts Haven and Academy heroes. Creatures and Hero levels are quite same. Lv.22 Knight has primary skills A:10 D:12 S:3 K:2 and Lv.23 Wizard ps. A:3 D:2 S:10 K:17 There is spells that might help Wizard to win this big battle but i doubt not! If the spellpower is bigger and knowlage is little smaller Wizard has good chances.Good hero is Jhora.



Racial Abilities and town specials are also very important!

Necromancy   = Necromancy to expert!Undead Transformer is great!*****
Avenger      = This is a good skill for Sylvain heroes.           ***
Elem. Chains = Elements are good. More Fury whit Ritual Pit!      ***
Training     = Hall of Heroes is must! Peasant to Archers!       ****
Gating       = Gating good! Sacrificial Pit NO!                    **
Artificer    = Arcane forge and library are nice                  ***

Hey, the hydra in h2 sucked - h3 hydras were 3x better!

Blood furies would be better if the AI focused something else. But it's so damn hard to keep them alive @ earlygame when killing neutral stacks, same for cerberi.. everything attacks them and their defense value is pathetic <_<

Academy is Tower from Heroes 3.  Most from Heroes 3 has been converted to Heroes 5, with a few ups and downs.

Haven is Castle.
Sylan is Rampart.
The last 3 "evil" castles are the same of Heroes 3, just not all or most of the creatures.

DUNGEON

Don't get ur self a headache u don't have to choose just close ur eyes and say dungeon.
Dungeon r cool cause their creatuers and their magics r extermly powerful.
Necropolisalso very strong because of their magics their creatuers r weaklings but they have huge growth.

Sylvanand Academyr also cool.

Has to be Haven, nothing can beat sending griffins in to annoy/hold up the opponent, ya bring in paladins to charge any strong unit they have and constantly hail them with the huge amount of marksmen (after training peasents) and inquisitors (after training footmen)..plus the kickass angles destroying anything left over!

Ahh Well The Haven creatures cant do anything agains the blood furies or the curses of necro or the master hunters of sylvan and the titans+magics for academy   i tried it b4 tho.

I voted Sylvan because I love nature, and I like elves. The druids and hunters look cool, and the hero looks really cool. Overall, it's a well-balanced faction. My second fav is academy.

since Summoning is not something Inferno is offered often, and you are not even assured to have a Summoning spell in your Mage Guild, i don't think you can call this "imba". Especially considering that having 100 Pit Lords will hardly ever happen in normal games.

ohh cmon don't tell me a 54 damage/week (bloodfury, that is) unit will stop 306 dmg/week jousting paladins, that is less than weekly pop of skell archers do -_-

And actually haven has the best defense against ranged with the light magic, battledive and shielding squires.. -_-

Oh the mighty Paladin... (Or Champions from HOMM3 and 4) Always my favorite creature (Unfortunately no more "Crusaders" as in HOMM2... TCHIK TCHIK TCHIK... VWHAMMMM). Haven (or Castle) Has always been my favorte; I also loved how the Angel and Archangel have no damage range (no need for luck, always same damage), even though Archangels aren't as powerful as in HOMM3 and 4. My second favorite is the Sylvan, since they have SUPERB initiatives and good range attackers starting off (Master Hunters are THE BOMB). Further, if you happen to develop the ultimate skill (Nature's Luck), OMG your power will increase by 2x (ALWAYS have luck during battle, which means ALWAYS DOUBLE DAMAGE). These 2 factions are easier to begin with and get your hands on IMHO. The other factions, there're more strategies involved; so i guess that makes me love "MIGHT" more than "MAGIC?" But "Meteor Shower" is one of my favortie spells to use, and also "Mass Blessing," "Mass Righteous Might," and "Mass Haste." Combine the mass effect spells with strong creatures and you're unstoppable!

I voted for dungeon - it may not be the most powerful in a single combat like sylvan or a massive steamroller like necropolis. Dungeon is a hard town to play with well, low growth rates and powerful creatures. For the most part dungeon is really rewarding and has one of the most powerful heroes. Destruction magic + warlocks luck + a +50% spelldamage of some element artifact + 25% elemental chain = half ur army gone with a meteor shower or all of any stack you play with an implosion. The only thing i would think about is if you removed the irrasistable magic can affect ur own creatures so you can use a black dragon + armageddon combo.

my favourite town has always been the academy (otherwise known as the tower), but the dungeon is not that bad 2, I love to poison enemies units and used blood fury to devasate without retaliation..

The phantom forces+gating is most certainaly a (serious) bug, which is to be remedeed in the next patch(es). The more I play, the more I think that the balance is done fenomenaly well - I really cannot say which is the most powerful town (well, actualy, in a very long game Klaus leading Haven is almoust unbeatable, I mean the jousting bonus is insane, you can easily kill 90 squires with 3 cavaliers, if you have war machines and tent I would say that you could kill even more, no matter their bash; and, in a very short game Deleb rules), in genral I like Inferno most cause it has incredible hero lineup.

My vote is Necro too... they were my favorite since HOMM3, however necro is weaker now, they are still cool, different (cos they are undead).. and as baklava said, they are weak so best to play..
