Starting Bonuses - Which Should You Choose?

I've found that in general, the best starting bonus to pick is generally the one that gives you the most ranged units, or the highst tier creature. Which starting bonuses should be picked for each level. Here is a list of what I picked for the first campaign.

1: No starting bonus
2: 10 Footmen
3: 10 Ore (Couldn't find an Ore mine on the level)
4: 15 Marksmen (Already had 5 Cavaliers, only ~20 Marksmen)
5: 4 Griffons (Gold was never an issue on this level)

I am also curious, if you pick the mirror image spell on mission 2 of the Inferno campaign, do you get to keep it for the next level? If so, that would probably be the best one...

yes you get to keep the spell. and BTW sometimes a spell that you cant use (lack of skill level) is offered to you and if you pick it at bonus you still can cast it the whole campaign for example i took phantom forces spell even though i didnt have basic summoning magic and i used it the entire campaign.

back to the subject:
choosing the right bonus is quite impossible until you start the mission and sees your situation. since you dont know your starting army/resources it is realy hard to say which bonus is better.

a choice between 50 wood or 10 druids for example:
if you already start with 200 druids the wood is better but if you start with 100 wood and no army then the 10 druids are better.
alot of time i choose a bonus then start the mission and immedatly regret my choice since the additional army that i chose is so insignifcant compared to the army i already have and wish i would have taken the artifact i was offred.

I like it when you get offered a choice and you dont have any information about your army or recources. And yes I do regret it sometimes but I will not load to correct my mistake. In those games where you werent perfect with your army the most interesting battles and things occur. Some excitement....because of your wrong choice....

i can understand the fact that you enjoy the randomness of your choices however i still think it is wrong...
i mean if you like it to be a surprise and unpredictable why make us choose? why not make it a random bonus and thats it? the fact that we have a choice should mean something.

i do not enjoy random desicions made for me like not knowing how the good the bonus i choose will be or which skills will pop up in my next level or what kind of hero will apear in my traven. i think that letting the player the ability to choose what he wants (for developing his character) is usualy the better way.

Just random would not be cool. You must be able to regret your choice or be happy later on that you did make the first seemingly wrong choice which allmost made you reload the campaign....
I think its just something that is supposed to be in a HoMM game..at least it allways was in HoMM2..expansion..HoMM3.expansions...I dont remember if it was in HoMM4 cause I got bored with it to quick.

Well, getting though the Necromancer campaign, I've started to see a lot of initial bonuses for spells that I have already. Certainly makes the choice easier. My HAven town level 5 mage guild had the Curse of the Netherworld spell, and I got Puppet Master during my Dark Revelation.

You never know. Say in one mission I had choice of spell I've known, armor which gives you +2 spellpower or 6 titans ().
I obviously chose 6 titans only to discover that I already had 40 titans in my army and not a single artifact on the map. I didn't replay, because I thought map was winnable anyways.  And guess what troops were left after final battle? Yes, 5 titans.
