The Proper Care and Feeding of: Peasants and Conscripts

Hopefully this thread will get other posters to come forth with their own 'Proper care and Feeding of' threads to help breakdown the uses and misuses of some of the popular and unpopular units in HOMM 5. Please feel free to add anything to this thread you think I have left out, or gotten wrong, as I am by no means an expert, but I still think this topic warrants discussion.

Today we will discuss the Peasant/Conscript.

This unit has its beginings rooted in the original King's Bounty game and though it was thought to have passed into gaming history to be replaced by pikemen it has since resurfaced in HOMM 5.

This unit is much maligned, often times disrespected or outright ignored, by enemies as well as their own commanders.

To this I say, "Ignore them at your peril!"

This unit can truly become great, with Proper Care and Feeding!

Peasant huts offer up about 22 units per hut, for my favorite price..free!

Gather as many as you can and reap the harvest of pain that they can become!

The Peasant is the most prolific unit the Haven faction has, and they can upgrade to become Conscripts, Archers, Marksmen, Footmen, and Squires! That is an awe inspiring ability! To emerge from the cocoon of gold as whichever of those units the commander feels fits his game style or particular need is unprecedented!

If you never upgrade this unit, or if you splurge your hard earned money on them to make Conscripts they can still be a fearsome tool in battle.

You must take advantage of the Peasant's/Conscript's advantages.

Numbers is only the second greatest advantage of these units. The first is; laughably enough; surprise!

Almost no one takes this unit seriously, and so when your 1500 conscripts hit with luck for over 12,000 points of damage it can totally surprise your opponent ( and maybe even yourself  .

These units are slow, but can benefit greatly from a haste spell if you need to cross the entire battlefield in 2 turns. If you know the enemy is coming to you, so much the better.

But the Peasant/Conscript isn't primarily an offensive unit. Although it is quite capable of dealing respectable damage when lucky and in large numbers, it's most appealing use is to absorb that pesky counterattack that most enemy units have when they are attacked. Of course this tactic works differently against enemy units with multiple counter attack capability, it is still handy to attack those units first with Peasants or Conscripts in order to wittle away a few of the numbers with which they can then counter attack your 'better' or 'more respectable' units.

Also splitting large numbers of Peasants or Conscripts into smaller groups that can then surround your missile attack units from being engaged in hand to hand is quite...well...handy!

Overall my advice to Haven faction players is to not overlook the potential provided by Peasant/Conscript. These units are quite usable, and given the right amount of upgrades they can blossom into a most effective addition to your army.

a Peasant starts actually earning you money after 20 DAYS he lives. With Ellaine, this is obviously set back to 10 days.
Conscripts lose Taxpayer, but they gain Shield Bash, which, coupled to Luck => Soldier's Luck, can give you a "mostly no retaliation" unit.

mostly, though, the best thing to do with peasants seems to give them to Ellaine until you can afford upgrading them en-masse to Archers.

I think this isn't a real good point, every faction gas 7 units (levels of units) and every hero has 7 slots to put units in, so a descent army has everything what means there is no room to spit units. And i really wouldn't want to miss swordsmen or griffins for the peasants. Also hen you do hat it is a ideaal target for mass damage spells (meteor shower, fireball, chain lightning) So you will have more dead sodliers then when you put your soldires scatterd over the battlefield.

Perhaps I should have been more clear about this being an early game strategy where you start with slots to burn. I never intended to imply that people go forth and conquer the world with 6 groups of peasants guarding a unit of marksmen.

Hehe, thanks for pointing out that error.

just train them up into archers, if you've had them long enough they will have paid for themselves and the upgrade
