That is quite hard to answer, because my favourite faction in H3 was not a constant. Towards the end it became Inferno - but I believe that it was mainly because I found it the hardest to play. I liked it because of the challenge.
The same is with Heroes 5. When it came out... I believe it was Sylvan. After a while it was Dungeon for a very long time. Then I found Academy, and it was there for a long time. I also liked Inferno very much in the early times, then I played it so much that I didn't want to play it anymore. Now it is coming back...slowly...
I love the Hero builds i can do with a Necromancer...but sadly I can't take joy of winning with them because against AI they are too easy. Dwarves actually fall almost to the same category. Instead of an interesting Hero build their creatures are fascinating...but with runes and few skills it becomes too easy.
At the moment it still is Academy, but Inferno just might be coming back

I was a fan of Warlock in H1, Undead in 2, but after that it has always been Sylvan/Rampart/Preserve.

There should be kinda "Like to play all of them" option here.
Like them all, playing one depending in which mood I am.
But alright, Im falling mostly back on the undead no matter which game. I love the dark and morbide things, suffering and spooky stuff  But pure brutality, neutrality and fighting for independence are sometimes also my choice.
my order would be mostly this
1:Necropolis
2:Sylvan/Rampart/Preserve
3:Fortress
4:Strongholld/definately Bastion when it comes out.
5 ungeon

Gone but not for Good...
My ultimate fav faction would have to be stronghold on homm3. i was disappointed to see that they arent there anymore but their is a stronghold like faction on tribes of the east.

Lets see. Sorceress (the phoenix tier 6 group) for heroes 2, Inferno all the way for Heroes 3 and 5.

THEY GOT RID OF FORTRESS AND BY THE WAY NOW SINCE THEY'RE GONE THE HYDRAS ARE ONLY TIER 5 AND THEY SUCK!!!!!

In H3, my favorite factions were Conflux, Necropolis, and Castle, in that order. I'm disappointed that there's no Conflux in H5 (but I liked Conflux because it was so powerful, not so much for the creatures, although they were all right). I still like Haven and Necropolis in H5. Another town has joined them among my favorites: Inferno. In H3, Inferno was one of the worst. In H5, it's good thanks to Gating. My three least favorites in H3 were Rampart, Dungeon, and Fortress, in that order. Rampart/Sylvan has been improved (but not that much), Dungeon still isn't that great (IMO), and Fortress is gone.

well i love necro, and it hasn't change to much since H3, altough the dragon seems pretty dum right now, I like the wraith over the dread knight, because in H 5 the dread knight looks weird.
Dungeon is another faction that I like only for the black dragons and minotaurs. I don't like the minotaur as a levl 3 ceature, it should be bigger, more massive.
Academy, altough the naga has changed, but I dislike the mages, they aren't interesting, to little damage, in comparison to the succubus.

Even with nerfed necromancry the Necropolis, much weaker vampires and dragons than in the last series(Loved H4 vampires&bonedragons ) It stands in my favourite town.

I tend to go for the town that has the coolest looking creatures...
HOMM3 >
Necropolis: Vampire Lords, Dread Knights, Ghost Dragons
Dungeon: Minotaur Kings, Black Dragons
Tower: Titans, Obsydian Gargoyles
But number 1 was Fortress: Chaos Hydras, Wyvern Monarchs, Mighty Gorgons, Lizardmen, Basilisks
Other than that there weren't many cool creatures, the archangels were too old and un-sexy to be cool.
HOMM5 >
Inferno: Pit Lords (shared favorit!), Succubi Mistressi
Dungeon: Black Dragons, Grim Raiders, Scouts, Deep Hydras
Necropolis: Spectral Dragons, Wraiths
Haven: Angels and Archangels (shared favorit!), Squires
Sylvan: Treeants, War Dancers
Academy: Djinn Sultans, and maybe Titans still.
Favorit faction is of course, a mixture of cool creatures

i loved necromancers in heroes 3, academy in heroes 4 (necros too) and dungeon,necropolis in heroes 5
dont like academy in heroes 5, djinns are like in heroes 3 (random caster, which i dont like) and wizard has no special school of magic (the illusions and crowd control were great)
