HAs anyone actually gotten an 'Elite' skill? If so how?

I am getting sick of this, trying to get the Elite skills seem pointless, even if you get up to the level required, there is virutally no chance you'll actually get the right level ups to get it. One level up or witch hut wrong and it becomes impossible, and I have heard that some of the heroes can't get their Elite skill because they have the wrong skillset right from the beginning.

I am going through the Inferno campaign, I have all of the right basic skills, I'm up to level 24 or so, only 5 skills away from my goal, and then my level up gives me to the choice between 'Master of Pain' and 'Master of Curses' which means that I can no longer get my Elite skill since my last Dark slot is taken.

Has anyone actually managed to get an Elite skill? If so, how?

You need to be very lucky =/

You could always cheat to give you a correct ability instead of one offered. Be careful with cheats, they might ruin your fun, but if you REALLy want the Ultimate Skill, then this is probably your safest bet.

I managed to get "urgash call" in campaign. It really took quite some time for i had to play the last campaign over again for 6 times until the game gave the right abilities to chose from.

Well, sadly even using the console I havn't gotten my Elite Skill... I need to get Dark Renewal or otherwise I will have to take one of the other dark skills on the next level up. Can't seem to have the console give me Dark Renewal. Oh well, maybe it wasn't meant to be, I suppose I should go back to that witch hut now as well then, since getting Navigation can't further screw up my getting the ultimate skill.

I haven't played very many games, been very busy lately. The games never seem to last long enough for me to get high enough level to get all the requirements for the elite skills. Thats right, there are requirments, and it has only a small deal to do with luck. http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=520 offers a great wheel if you want to see how to reach the elite skills, just click on the skill you want and it shows all the requirements. Beware, there is only a limit of 3 abilities per skill, so dont waste all the ability slots, and not get the one required for the elite skill

While it is true there are requirements, there IS a great deal of luck involved, since you might not get offered the required skills to get your ultimate, no matter how hard you try.

For those who wish to cheat to gain a certain ability, feel free to use my list (se link below).
Like silentbobus, I couldn't get the game to give me Dark Renewal and was only given some choices that didn't help me get Urgash's Call.

No, there really is an ammount of luck. Near the end you have already taken all of your skills, and you are forced to take abilities. If both of the abilities offered are not for your Ultimate Skill, but are within a necessary skill group then you are out of luck. At level 24 or so I was already Expert in all six of my skills and still needed 5 abilities to get my Ultimate skill. Each time I leveled up there was a chance (probably around 25%-50%) that I would get offered two of the wrong skills. After enough level ups though you will eventually get one that blocks you from getting your Ultimate.

The game is preety unfair regardind your chances in getting elite skills. In the begining of each game it automatically makes a list of what it will give you and when, and only if you are very lucky do you have the chances of getting elite skills.

Even cheating to give myself two skills to replace two bogus ones I still didn't end up getting the Elite Skill on the Inferno mission. Levels just come so ridiculously slowly after you get past lvl 25 or so. It's stunning to get 30k experience in a battle and then see afterward you got no level ups. I also never saw the necklace that is required to get over Expert Mastery of your racial skill.

Taking skills in required skill trees that are not needed towards the ultimate will remove any chance of getting the ultimate.

Here's my method:
1. Get 6 base skills immediatly. The 6th one is what I call a selection buffer. When your alternative choices take a needed slot, I take a skill from the not important skill tree.
2. Choose advanced skill over 1st sub-skill in the chain.
3. Choose expert skill over 2nd sub-skill in chain.
3. Never take a skill that will take a slot away from the 3 required sub-skills. For example, while going for Urgash's Call, never take Archery(attack) or Tactics(attack) as these will remove any chance of getting all three required attack sub-skills (Battle Frenzy, Cold Steel, Power of Speed). This doesn't pertain to the main skill, so taking Hellfire won't mess you up.

Hope everyone understands

I think everyone knew that. The point is that the problem appeares when for example you have all your skills at expert level, you need only 2 or 3 more abilities and when you level-up the game makes you chose from 2 abilities that screw up your entire work. In my opinion that's a preety snowy thing Nival so gracefully did for us.

I wasn't sure everyone knew about it, so I posted that info. What miffs me the most is being presented with only 2 options, both of which will mess up the chain, while there are other options also available but not shown.

And Nival should increase sub-skill slots to four.

I was myself very concerned about these ultimate skills before I actually tried the game. Having played the game, I can say: Yes, they are virtually impossible to get (haven't managed yet) - and no, it really doesn't matter that much to me. Actually, in most cases I find them kinda worthless - they are good, but most of the time, I will rather have a selection of 6 skills and 18 abilities that fits my hero and campaign rather than the one combination that is exactly correct to obtain this skill. In the end, I feel I gain more by sacrificing that one ability and then have freedom to select a fairly large number of good skills and abilities, I would otherwise not have been able to choose.

Just curious, but does anyone know how to remove a skill via the console? I feel bad adding skills to my hero when I really just want to take a different skill selection on a level up where I had no good option.

First, you must know the skill choosing route which can lead you to the elite racial skill.
Second, must find a Hero who doesn't miss the requirement.
Third, you must be very lucky (especially for Mages as they hardly get the chance to learn Attack).
Anyway, the elite racial skills ARE powerful indeed!

IMHO leveling to this 27-30 level to get ultimate skill is very hard in a skirmish but gaining certain necessary skills and abilities is almost impossible.
I think that there would be two great things to make it easier:
- as in HoMM IV - while visiting witch's hut there should be a question 'Do you wanna learn this skill'
- as in Wake of Gods - there should be a special univeristy (building on adventure map) where your hero could forget useless skills/abilities (and for example exchange two skills/abilities for one useful).
Of course adding fourth place for ability would give huge chance to get properly skills but it would change a bit ballance of game.
Other possibility to getting ultimate skill easier would be implementing some scrypt that would check whether you can reach the ultimate skill or not and if you're able to reach it - give you at leats one skill/ability  that suits your way to it.
IMHO the last proposition is the best 'cause it don't destroy the balance of the game at all.

I think this discussion very well proves how stupid the requirements for the ultimate skills are. I think 3 required skills would have been great, 4 would be too many but could be accepted, whilst 5 is way too many. And it just makes it worse that there are only 3 ability slots to each skill, and not 4 (or even 5).

Also, as many have pointed out, you just need to reach an unreasonably high level to even have enough skills and abilities to gain the ultimate skill. I think the game really needs some of these skill/ability boosters of Heroes IV, that would make you increase your skill (or ability) without having a level up. That was a very nice feature. And then, as someone also said, for Gods sake make those witch huts optional. It just makes no sense at all that you are forced to learn some rubbish skill because you visit the hut - after all, it's an offer from a witch to learn a skill, not some sort of sneak attack that you can't avoid.

In my very humble opinion, ultimates are like a carrot tied by a string. You'll rarely get it if you run after it, but while you try, you'll nerf yourself with useless skills/abilities.

I agree that some of the skills required to get the Ultimate are useless, so I generally try to save those for last. Power of Speed anyone?
