There is how I could list them:
Imperial Griffin (because of Battle Drive)
Vampire Lord (because of Life Drain)
Arch Mage (because of their shot that shots thru every creature)
Druid Elder (because of their powerful lightning bolt)
Succubus Mistress (because of chain lightning)
Grim Raider (because of some had to be last  )
In the Haven champaign level 5, I had to fight a group of Arch Mages which I couldn't win without any losses. So I tried a 1vs1, my Imperial Griffins vs Arch Mages, and it was a 1-hit kill. No losses 
Note that the Battle Drive will damage ANY unit, even your own, when they attack the selected square! By accident my griffins killed all my paladins *ouch* in a battle.

Archmagi. I'm a ranged fighter, so I'm biased towards shooters and casters. Elder Druids are cool, but Archmagi can hit more units. They can even cast on Black Dragons.

my vote goes for the succubus becuase she is the only naked one! hehe just kidding - you all mentioned her great ability to chain shots but you forgot another great ability that she has which is range retaliation which no other units posses!
shooting back at shooters and not just at them but also on an entire group of freinds (becuase of chain - yes it works on retaliation too) is just too good to dismiss.
and if you want another reason - with the right hero she can gate! yes multiply your favoruite chain shooter and summon more freinds to the party!
yes i like the vampire lords too - teleport and no retaliation is real good but shooting is much better and yes it can drain life but since its only 50% (and not 100% like it used to be) its not that great anymore - the vampires power has totaly diminished and i think people will probably choose them as number 1 just becuase they were totaly cool and overpowered in previous heroes games (yes nostalgia does that to people).
i mean come on be honest with your self - your walking on the world map who would you rather guard that powerfull artifact - lots of vampire lords or lots of imperial griffons or lots of succubus?
i will rather fight the griffons or the vampires than any other 4th level creature becuase of their nasty spells/shots succubus being last becuase i know that even i get the initiative and i shoot at them they will shoot right back at me and blast a group of my creatures no matter how far away from each other i place them.
the fact is that the succubus is a very strong shooter and there is good reason why so - becuase its the only inferno's shooter thats why they had to empower her - to cover for the lack of shooters.

I totally agree that to that...that covers all of what I would say to praise the succubus mistress.

Gotta love the succubus mistress. The chain attack and the shooter retaliation are both amazing. It's even kind of fun hurting my own troops when I pick up some non-inferno stragglers 
Tough choice though. The tier 4s are a very formidable group this time around.

yes, i have to agree that the succubi mistress are one of the best troops to come from inferno
but i cast my vote for arch magi, simply because of the piercing magic attack, and the decent damage... (even though the attack has it's down side, when you hit yourself, but backup plan for that: magic fist ) however, arch magi cost a lot... but they are still worth it (compared to other academy creatures...)

altho i still prefer the imperial griffins i agree with ArmyEye in the fact that all 4th lvl creatures really stand out compared to other lvls having such great creatures as succubus/imperial griffin/arch magi/vampire lords ect

as much as I love my Arch Mages the Succubus Mistress unit is just the most versatile ranged unit in the game and the only ranged retal unit. Chain shot is deadly and I always get my Hall of Temptations in the first week to start off Succubus growth asap.

I think vampire lords are the best!They can drain life and teleport from one place to another.I thought that vampires in Heroes 3 are the best,but now-Heroes 5 vampires became the best forth unit I know.

Imperial Griffins are the strongest, fastest and the best tactical-wise. Their survivability is OK with eruina too. Definitely the best lvl4 unit around.
Vamplords are wimps. Teleport, lifedrain, too bad thay can't kill a thing. PATHETIC DAMAGE! They are marvelous in creeping, though.
Succubus mistresses are ok, with hellfire that is.
Archmagi and druid elders.. Not bad. They have their uses.
As for Grim Raiders, well, they are quite good.
Berserkers are very bad by themselves, but with runes they suddenly become very good.

Succubus Mistress, definately. They fit perfectly in Inferno's lineup as well, the only shooter and at average level 4. Infero has mostly been oriented to grunt troops, and the chainshot really is a nice solution to increase the ranged back-up by a single unit.

My favourite lev. 4th uprade unit is Berserker.
I like him, bacause he's quite fast and can do not bad damage without using he's powerfull skill...
And with his skill he can kill almost every creature in the game.
His skill is very handy, 'cause Dwarven Heroes simply all the time chooses Defense and Defense formation, and when Berserker will convert that all Defense to atack he can be the most powerfull ( in attack of course and dealing damage as well ) creature in the game...
