The Heroes' Quest Virutal Series

I'm something of a writer, and for the past six months or so, I've been hard at work (pfft...) on a virtual series. It's likely that many of you have never heard of a VS, let alone know what one is, but it's basically like a television series in that episodes are released at more or less regular intervals, except in the form of scripts.

The Heroes' Quest chronicles the adventures of Ryu, Falco, and Kythe, the fabled 'heroes' of Syrith, as they quest to defeat Lord Seth, the ruler of a mighty and oppressive empire that is slowly but certainly conquering the world.

Yes, on the surface, it's extremely cliche, but, that's only the surface. Currently, 9 episodes have been released (at an average length of around 33 pages, although it's in script format, so bear in mind that it's not 33 pages of nonstop text), and the tenth episode will be released on friday.

I'm really hoping for reviews and such, because not many people on the forums that I usually frequent are very much into the fantasy genre.

The episodes are in .pdf format, and are available here: http://www.freewebs.com/worldofsyrith/scripts.htm

For the record, the first episode has recently been rereleased and is an update of the original, whereas the second and third episodes aren't quite up to the same standards (but will soon be revised) - however, it's at a pretty consistent standard of writing from the fourth episode onwards (although I will admit that the sixth needs a slight bit of brushing up, which I'm currently working on, and the character dialogue in the fourth is a bit stiff, but that's changed over time).

Here, I'm going to post an excerpt from the revised first episode, page 16/33:

Quote:

[Ryu runs back out of the dense plants, and draws his sword.]

  RYU
We’re not safe here!

  FALCO
(concerned)
What is it?

[Two soldiers step out of the bushes in front of them, two more behind them, and two more on either side. One of them speaks, and he is obviously their leader.]

  SOLDIER #1
In the interest of the Empire and
the name of Lord Seth, both of you
are to be tried and sentenced for
threatening to join the resistance.

  RYU
(quickly)
You have no jurisdiction in Syrith,
and no right to arrest us.

[The soldier draws his sword, and shakes his head.]

  SOLDIER #1
You don’t get it… regardless of the
laws of the former governing body of
this country, the empire is unopposed
in this land, and will soon rule it,
as it does so many others already. It
doesn’t matter whether this is official
or not…
(he glares at Ryu)
Which means it doesn’t matter whether
you are killed or not.

[Ryu assumes a fighting stance.]

  RYU
I suppose this means that I’ll have
to defend myself.

[Ryu steps forward. In split second, the following happens: Soldier #1 begins charging Ryu with sword drawn, Ryu stands still and watches.]

I find that this excerpt is more of a taste of the quality of the writing as opposed to the actual flow of the story, but I do hope you'll like it, and I'll post more of it later. In the actual episodes, though, there are no brackets like there are in the quote, because the formatting from the script doesn't carry over into the quote, and therefore I had to make it more readable.

First of all, the "script" format you are using is somewhat difficult to read.  I know that's standard but I really don't even really understand how the professionals do it.  Maybe they've done it for so long their mind can just understand it intuitively.  I would be much more inclined to read it if it was in prose though.

also this is just IMHO but it does sound a bit cliched,

It also kind of sounds like star wars too.

You might want to try your hand at Milena's short story contest.

[edit]
also I just looked over your post again and I didn't see any women anywhere, which automatically makes me think it's a snoozefest.

Well, I can safely tell you that once you know a bit more about it, you'll realize that it doesn't share any more in common with Star Wars than the concept of an empire with no specific name. I said that it does sound cliche on the surface, but there's a lot of backstory to the world and the characters that I don't exactly want to reveal in the brief description of the series.

As for a lack of women, that's not exactly true. I don't have any women regulars, but that's because there wasn't exactly a part for one (if I could have included one, I would have). You see, the virtual series is based off of a role play two of my friends and I did in real life, and neither of them are girls. Hence, three heroes who are males. There is a female character who will play a strong role in the 18th episode, and there will also be a 'short' (which is essentially a short screenplay that's not quite an episode or a movie) centered around her.

Can't help you with script format. I find that it's pretty easy to read - did you check the actual documents, though? The quote is hard to read, but the actual documents are very different.
