I am american. Also, as I said before (not in this thread, but in a message to you), I consider myself much more of a math rock nerd than a metalhead. The large reason why most of my references were american (though necronomicon is swedish and rammstein and KMFDM are german), is because most of my metal exposure has been through shows and through my metalhead friend. Also, as you pointed out, I didn't list black metal or power metal (not because I forgot about them or because I don't like them, but because it was getting late and I was getting tired), which, as you said, hosts a lot more european bands (not that there aren't a crapload of swedish grindcore bands, etc). I love Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, and the other early black metal stuff I've heard; and Emperor is solid. Mayhem is crucial, of course, and there's a bunch of other euro metal I listen to, but I don't really want to spend a paragraph name-dropping.

It's a sad fact to me that most europeans discount most americans as having no frame of reference outside of american culture, and, similarly, the silly thought that europeans have a much more broad spectrum of observance outside of european/american culture. Trust me when I say that I don't just eat up what american media hands me. Also, please understand that North America dwarves Europe in size - there is a lot going on here that you know squat about, no matter how much you may suggest otherwise...if you'd like, I can list off a bunch of american bands that i'm pretty sure have escaped the european radar. Or maybe I should mention some brazilian or japanese metal that I listen to, because you didn't really mention any of them, so maybe you've just got a sheltered Eurocentric view on metal

I've just met too many Europeans who take a snobby tone as though I'm some incest backwater hick who doesn't know anything overseas because "america doesn't pay attention to anyone but themselves."
I find it funny that you remind me of a good friend of mine, who moved from paris to new york a few years ago, and also listens to metal and plays homm

And Dread_Knight, you forgot one.
* ACID HEAD - The protagonist drops acid and walks into the castle. Sees the dragon, thinks it's a hallucination and starts laughing hystercally. Suddenly notices a woman who turns into a witch. Freaks out from having a bad trip, and runs from the castle screeming.

It doesnt matter, genres blah...you like metal, then you like metal.
Currently I am listening to Opeth, In Flames, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Immortal, Dimmu, Enslaved...thats a nice crossection there, but its all metal.

unusual story about how I heard about in flames, actually. I was in a band that did a song entitled "top secret zombies inc." and was bored one day so I decided to do a search for it and discovered that this band had already made a song called "zombie inc."...not quite the same name, but I still felt as though I had inadvertantly ripped them off (though my band's song was more of a pixies ripoff). Whatever the case, I soon found out more about in flames and checked out their catalogue...damn fine metal.

who said anything about prejudice? I use to listen to Nirvana quite a bit... turned 15 and lost all interest!
(if you`re gonna accuse me of prejudice, do it for the right reasons.. like: women, culture, gendre, race, religion, handicap, social class, politics, USA... and who can forget Solmyr`s the best!!)
and Im from Canada and I have to admit that when you guys go off on a tear of all these metal types, im at a total loss.. if I lived in Europe(or the surroundings), I`d prolly be a HUGE metal head...
so for me heavy metal, is anything you play really loud with really heavy distortion!

 Bin, I only mentionned Steppenwolf on a historical point of view here, hence my naming exclusively their massive hit <<Born To Be Wild>>, because it's this song that had a real impact in this regard (mostly thanx to being on Easy Rider original soundtrack). That said, they've done many other cool songs of course. <<The Pusher>>, <<Magic Carpet Ride>>, <<Spiritual Fantasy>>...
Rych and Jebus are both right. I'm not a fan of categories for categories' sake. However, when speaking about music (whithout sound) it's important to make sure we understand what we're referring to. I slightly disagree with some of Okie's descriptions, but no one description is definitive and universal. Labels are just words we use to describe the music. But we would have a much harder time talking about music without some kind of referral system.
Okie, there's a hughe difference between "Euro radars" and MY own personnal radar ! Even though overall, loads of american bands made it big in europe while much less the other way round. Which has nothing to do with the quality, but is a question of market(ting) and culture. Likewise, Japanese fans have access to much more stuff than even us Europeans.
Folks, don't give up on broadening your metal culture ! You in particular, Jebus : you're "i'm canadian so I basically don't deserve to know all the greats of metal" declaration almost made me cry !  So what ? Canada also has a part (though humble in size) in metal history. Anvil, Exciter, Annihilator, Voivod, Deaf Dealer... You have the same internet access as any european, and now you also have some virtual metal mates (in us), so dry those tears and open your ears, man ! Rejoice, even : you still have a LOT of great stuff to discover !

it's also important for nerdy metalheads with too much free time (eg my friend mark) to be able to organize their metal vinyl by means more than just standard alphabetical.

I know I know. as I said, I was just yankin yer chain. I got a little miffed at the generalization of my nationality and so I made a not-so-serious generalization of Europeans. It's hard for a lot of european metal to get big in the US because...well you summed it up in your post before...but there are still plenty of us who search it out...the internet can be a beautiful thing.

don't remember EVER saying I "didn't deserve to know all..."
I do however agree that Canada's metal interest is a little weak.

Seriously though, ALWAYS be careful while according your guitar ! I once had the 1st string breaking unexpectedly and it litteraly pierced the flesh of my forearm. It didn't really hurt (didn't even bleed), but it felt horribly strange !

Metal is a good 'form' of music, but as always not everyone will like and enjoy it.
I like some Metal like Led Zep for example, he is great, makes good music well used to make good music and some of his songs were great.

Okay, so this far our virtual band has one keys player and... 5 guitarists ? No drummer yet. 
I could switch to bass and vocals and let the others handle the guitar, but no way I could handle the drums at the same time. Well, for a record I could, but certainly not on stage.
