metal is fast, contains heavy instruments, melodic, and usually someone screaming in the microphone (face it will, enev Judas priest did it with Painkiller), those things alone is not so good, try speeding up stand by me, it sounds awful. but put those things together and you will have emos The best music genre in the world!

No, in Painkiller that was not screaming, that was him singing but almost in a shouting way at parts.

And there's big differences between Heavy Metal and Screamo. The fact that screamo is screaming and MOST if not ALL metal is usually singing, and the fact that screamo is s*** and metal is awesome. lol

It's not necessarily melodic (unless we mean different things) and there are plenty of metal genres where people aren't screaming... heck, it doesn't even has to be fast to be considered metal sometimes.

Listen to the album 'British Steel' by Judas Priest. Some of the songs, if not all of them, aren't that fast compared to something like the 'Painkiller' album. Still, fast metal is usually classed as Speed Metal.

@Geny, metal is as melodic as anything, even those über fast constant growling 200 ackords per minute genres are melodic, one just has to listen.

The thing is that the different metal genres differ so much. Saying what is and isn't metal is somewhat impossible, since you can always say that it's like "that" kind of metal.

It's easy to say what is and isn't metal. Whatever isn't metal sounding obviously isn't metal, stuff like classic rock for instance.

Trust me, City, I have heard bands that sound like fastened static noise passed through a powerful amplifier with someone barfing in the background.

@william
While there are bands/songs that you can obviously call metal (or not metal), the line between hard rock and metal is very blurry and depends sometimes on a person's view of music.

You can't just listen to some bands and say that metal as a whole isn't necessarily melodic. The majority of the more influential bands to metal music are melodic and that's what I think carcity was meaning.

If you use the word "influential", then I agree. If you switch it to popular then I wouldn't be so sure. Although, the majority probably is, you're right at that.

I'm sure Carcity would strongly disagree with you and wouldn't be the only one. (I do agree btw) Sabbath doesn't have the 10th of the speed most Metal bands have and certainly no insane screaming, so for the people who were born into the era of Speed Metal or Death Metal it's very hard accepting Black Sabbath as a "true" metal band.

I disagree, Black Sabbath is NOT Heavy metal, it's British Metal.

Hmm I see. If we look at the definition of "Heavy Metal", you get:

Definition: loud and harsh sounding rock music with a strong beat; lyrics usually involve violent or fantastic imagery.

Black Sabbath is most definitely loud and harsh sounding (to me anyway) and definitely contains lyrics involving violent and fantastic imagery. Other bands like Manowar, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Pantera etc are like this too. Felt like saying this just in case Carcity does disagree with me. lol

Also the distinction between Heavy Metal and hard rock could be kinda easy, to me. Just compare a band like Black Sabbath to Deep Purple. Deep Purple is basically the definition of what is Hard Rock (AC/DC can also be called this too), whereas Black Sabbath is definitely Heavy Metal (using the definition I said above).

Also, Carcity, the definition I think you want is NWOBHM: New Wave of Heavy British Metal.

No, that's actually nice. (although I never was a big fan of growling)

And I'm surprised that you consider Sabbath metal. It doesn't have half of the criteria you mentioned earlier.

Edit:
@william
Delete loud and I'll agree. Sabbath has more of an eerie type of sound. It doesn't have to be loud to be harsh and scary.
