I always thought that WoG was just a "gimmick" fun user made mod, but I couldn't enjoy it because it changed too much in my opinion.

So far, my vote goes to Homm3

I voted for III early this week. My reasoning is that until V gets a map generator/builder III takes the prize. I like random and custom maps even more than campaigns.

Each to his own BigBadVoodoo. I thought WoG was great. Some of the stuff it introduced was overpowered, but these could be turned off.

The stack experience and army commanders, however, were really cool and I truly hope that H5 sees something similar in the end.

WoG was a mod in the true sense of the word. It change a lot of things and added even more :-)

Heroes III. Naturally.

Heroes I isn't very good anymore.. It's still Heroes and all, but nowadays we want more than that. The good thing: It's free now!

Heroes II was totally awesome. I remember the first time I got the demo.. I spent 6 months with it. It only contained one map (Free for All was its name , I think.. It was a good map) but you could play all towns. But it didn't caught me as much as..

..Heroes III did. The best game ever made. The story is amazing (at least with SoD and AB) and it has the looks and it's HUGE and has lot's of DEPTH and it ROCKS and it.. You know. I think I have 1000+ game hours and the fanbase (aka lots of homemade maps ) is awesome.

WoG is a great thing. The thing I liked most was the scripts. This adds a LOT to RPG-maps and campaings.

Heroes IV was not that good. It was playable, but not more. It felt... incomplete. It felt odd to play. The Hero-leveling system was pretty OK, although it had plenty of room for improvment. Not a very good game.

Heroes V.. I've only played the open beta, and it was pretty good. It looked nice and stuff. The towns are OK too. Although.. I can't get over the fact that they created a whole new world for this game. But then I simply adore the world in M&M and Heroes III so I don't think I'm entitled to comment the world in Heroes V. I do plan on bying in when they cut prices. I have my Heroes III (and some Freelancer and Emperor: RotMK) so I'm set for life.

I have to say Heroes 3 for EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME durability. My dad still plays Heroes 3 (with expansions), and has done so since 1 year after it came out, and I still enjoy playing it with him. It is without doubt the one game with the longest durability I ever tried. For this, I think it qualifies for title as best game ever.

Heroes 1 was fun, but was blown away by Heroes 2. Heroes 2 was great, but was blown away by Heroes 3. Heroes 4 was absolutely horrible. I did play it quite a lot, but it was one of the biggest let-downs ever. Heroes 5 promises to be great - with upcomming expansions, it could even be better than Heroes 3.

WOG is not really it's own game. It had a lot of nice features, and some really pointless ones (level 8 creatures = waste of time). It could have been great, but stability problems really pulled it down for me. Still, it's an interesting add-on.

WoG's creatures aren't a waste of time, they add alot more hmm "replayability" to the game, and they add something more to it.
Anyway changing is good isnt it?

It's very hard for me to make a decision. I liked H2 a lot (haven't played  H1)even though I stopped playing when H3 appeared wich was also a very good game...WoG brought more fun to the game but it's still H3...there wouldn't be WoG without H3 . Didn't like H4...except the skill system. And as many said before...H5 has a lot of potential and I hope it will be better than H3.

I'll go for H3 because of the good times I've had in that game .

I think they were a waste of time, because they, like the Mighty Dragons, didn't come as creatures in the town, and therefore never really became important for the game. Sure, having one or two Supreme Arch Angels was usefull, just like having one or two Azure Dragons was useful - but in the long run, they will never contribute to the backbone of your army. And then, even though the idea was fun, I think in actual gameplay, they just seemed a bit misplaced.

Well there is an option to make them upgraded once well sorry.
I mean if I buy a Titan and then the next day it will be upgraded into a Lord of Thunder.
Thats one of the options enabling me to do that.
And I dont think they are misplaced at all, they are perfectly placed imho.

Erm Alci, you may not have read the documentation properly...

8th level creatures can be recruited in town. Once you've flagged the 8th level dwelling relevant to a town 8th level creaturs become available in the relevant town once a week. Growth does not roll over, if I recall, and it may be they only appear on one day of the week to boot.

As for the Power of 8th level creatures...

They're actually really really useful. Fertile Dracoliches are incredibly tough and Blood Dragons are truly scary. It takes a while to accumulate 8th level creatures, though, so they're only a viable tool in long games (Long as in >3 months...)...

I think it depends on what you chose for 8th level creature setting, whether or not they were available in your town. But as you say, once you flag the creature dwelling - and that's another problem. What if there is no creature dwelling relating to your town on the map? And what if there's only a creature dwelling for some of the towns - how's that for balancing?

But anyway, I just stated my oppinion, I have no problems with the 8th level monsters being there, I just think it was an idea that looked better on the drawing table than it came out in the actual game. Thus, I just disabled them, and no problems with that. And I know some people thought they were fun, fine by me - just like the Azure Dragons, some people hated them, others thought they were waste of time.

Definitely Heroes 3 and its two official expansions. The game is so simple, fun and addictive that it even hooked a few of my female friends into gaming. No game at all is as easy to pick up and start playing as this one.

WOG, all the way. H3 is the greatest of the vanilla HOMM, but WOG takes it to a totally new level. Disregarding the creatures (and don't forget that there are more than just lvl8's -- sorceress, two new sharpshooters, santa gremlin, werewolf, etc.), the scripting language makes it possible to do anything your heart desires. Maps like "Painted the Misfit" by Fnord, ByteBandit, et al. are astounding thanks to the control afforded them by the scripting language. It's just kind of a shame that the scripting is so difficult to master; it's more complicated than ASM, IMO. New artifacts, new terrain types, "atmospheric effects" (ok so those aren't that great). Commanders & stack experience as of 3.58. Secondary skills made actually useful (like Mysticism -- who ever took mysticism of their own volition prior to WOG?), and artifacts made useful too (like the Stoic Watchman). At any rate, my hat goes off to Slava and the WOG team. It's kept H3 alive for years, through the doldrums of H4, which I found unplayable. I'm thoroughly enjoying H5 (albeit with some caveats), but WOG still takes the cake.

Well this is a hard Question! My brother and I have Played HoMM2 so much, he invited me into the univers, and i thank him. So HoMM2 Was Super for me. but as a young lad as me, I needed more. So when i tried HoMM3 I got addicted , My god that game rocks the world!! So my choice of the best would be HoMM3. HoMM4 SUCKED!!! So bad, i can't play it. HoMM1 i haven't tried but i know it is very similar to HoMM2... and HoMM5 is a great game, just lack in maps. and some bugs, just to much black holes! They should have waited a yeah more.. so they could make this game the best ever! sad they didn't

Hi, started with Heroes I.  I played it at a friends house and loved it.  Wouldn't you know for my birthday I received Heroes II.  Excellent game, better than one.  It and the expansion were nice.  I never got into H III much.  I like it fine and recently bought it so I can play it more thoroughly.

I feel heroes II and III are unbalanced with town portal though.  Once you get that it's all over.

That is why I pick V.  The skill system is very nice and the spells like town portal and instant travel (err dimension door) are not over powered.

I like Heroes IV but I found it unbalanced and confusing(fog of war/battlefield view) so I stick with the other games.
