Hi, I'll have to say Heroes 3 is the best. I played all the heroes except WoG (although not in the correct order), Heroes 1 was a really nice beginning, Heroes 2 was a great game, but Heroes 3 takes the lead because it's basically Heroes 2 with more stuff. Heroes 5 is a good game with great potential but haven't reached the level of Heroes 3 yet.

P.S. I looked at the results of the poll and there isn't much Heroes 4 in there. I hate it myself, but there are lots of people who loved it more the Heroes 3, I don't think they've seen this poll...

Yes,undoubtaly heroes 3 is the best, with WOG but,I took the title separated from the expansion...
h5 is very good, not perfect, but it can be..so it's on second place, and on third,h2.after these I think heroes 1 and on last place the 4th HOMM game.I simply don't like it!!played it for about 20 days trying to see a good perspective(it has some)but not on my taste!definetely!

Choosing a game in the Heroes of Might and Magic series is not an easy picking. After much consideration (and much gaming ) I voted Heroes 4.

Heroes 1 was my first contact with the series and became instantly addicted (even tough my friend, who owned the game, didn't like it that much). I remember playing for days, but I do not recall if I ever finished it (completed the Campaign with all the races and all the single maps). Nowadays, I still love it.

Heroes 2 gave me a strange feeling: there were a lot of new and nice features, but the upgrading system (especially the dragon: it had to go from green to red and from red to black) was not at all to my liking.

I decided to give the series a break, but I couldn't resist Heroes 4. I could not possibly count the hours I "lost" while playing it. It just felt bigger, brighter and better! And it still does! I love the heroes to be a playable "creature", to choose between two buildings of the same tier, to have more than one heroe in an given army, to be able to transfer my "monsters" from castle to castle with caravans, to command my creatures without a hero, etc.. The list goes on and on...

Later I played Heroes 3 (for it would be good in my resume to have played the entire series ). All the reviews were good, word of mouth from my friends were spetacular, but I felt it missed something. Something that was in Heores 4. And I had to upgrade all my units.

Heroes 5 is a good game (too bad my computer does not allow too much eye candy ), but it looks more like an upgraded Heroes 3 than a new and better game. I believe that was what many fans wanted, but it makes me a little sad.

I doubt it would matter.H4 is far from all other heroes games with its own distinct feel and gameplay and some liked it more.On an objective level H3 is superior(won't get into this-no reason) but from then on it's a matter of personal taste.

HOMM3 plus xpacks excluding god "bleh" is by far the best. They couldnt do any better then HOMM3 and tried a different path with HOMM4 which imho was a train wreck. All in all HOMM3 will never be surrpassed by any other HOMM to come, unless they redo HOMM3 in todays graphics and design plus the new races with all the same options as HOMM3...artifacts+combining, heroe iterface with same number of artifact placements. That and they can keep the HOMM5 skills they seem to be an improvement........

Probably HOMM3 + Expansions for me

Clearly the mission for Nival from the UBI management was to stay close to H3 with H5 to benefit from the fan base and introduce some cool graphics.

On the adventure map they have, IMO, succeded rather well. The maps are smaller but as an H3 fan I felt right at home. The H4 map was just overloaded in graphics and colors. It can be a bit tricky to spot everything depending on camera angle, but flying over the scenery is nice.

Unfortunately, that is about all I like about the graphics. The cities are lifeless 3D models. After finishing the haven campaign I still don't have a clue which spire up there breeds Champions or where the tavern is located. And it just doesn't matter because the user interface doesn't even need the graphics at all. Its just a series of menus that could have been implemented on a Commdore64.

Underground the thing with the camera plain sucks. Is there at least a way to get a first person camera?

The constant change between birds eye view of the battle field and brief close-up takes of the action really could be the reason that PC games need the epilepsy warning. And is a tactics phase without seeing the oppenent stacks a bug, or what? H4 didn't catch on with me, but I did find it a significant improvement in battle field graphics over H3. The polished wood ship deck in H4 at 1280 resolution is superb. H5 substantially falls behind that.

The 3D creature models in H5 are cheap and clumsy. The sound in H3 was already good and chain lightning had decent FX even back then.

H5 had its chance to be better by keeping the core mechanics and putting them into a beautiful new coat. Failing at this rather miserably, H3 stands out a perennial unrivaled classic.

The simplicity of the menu is ok with me.

The underground does suck, but later patches added a transparency so it isn't as bad.

You can switch off close up cinematics in the game options.

Doesn't it lend an unfair advantage to the one who can see the set troops of the other...the one who can move them.  I like it fine the way it is.  Leaving troops off the battle field is a nice feature.

Heroes III, although it's a close one. While Heroes V has - of course -a lot of better graphics, It just misses 'something' that Heroes III had. Plus, I think that the third edition was very good for the year it was produced in.They should have put a bit more of new ideas in HOMM5. Not a total makeover, but just a few changes would've been nice.

Well, I voted HoMM5, but it's a close call.  HoMM3 was fantastic, along with its expansions and I played it year after year when fresher strategy titles came out. It just continued to trump everything until 5 came along.  In some ways, I think 3 is still the better game and can understand why so many picked it over 5.  All the same, the new hero system, the 3d graphics, the potential for immersion in the game, its freshness, all tipped 5 over the top.

Rant Warning!!

I cannot believe anyone could possibly vote, or even consider voting, for 4.  That game was worse than horrible, partly I suppose, because I'd been looking forward to it so much.  The graphics were bland and distant, the tactical maps were horrible and difficult to navigate (couldn't stand how the dragon's breath was so hard to aim, for example), not to mention the aweful castle seige parts, good God.

The reduction of creatures in towns, the magic system, the stupid expansion titles... how 'bout that elven hero, Revol Erutan?  Any game design group that has to fall on the idiotic trick of naming someone by reverse spellings (Revol Erutan spells Nature Lover backwards- what a joke) is really scraping the bottom of the creative barrel.  Not only is it absolutley stupid, but its a trick I used to use when I played D&D as a 12 year old.  I grew out of it.  To think that a team of programmers and designers had to do it for a commercial game product makes my stomach churn (makes me nausious just to think about it).

But the worst of all, and I mean this is horrid, was the AI.  I tried and tried to like 4, even dusting it off to play it again lately after 5 came out, just to make sure I wasn't off my nut.  But no matter how I tried, I just couldn't stop being bored to tears by it.  Sitting there watching the AI mosey back and forth in front of a mine or town but never once try to capture them got incredibly dull within the first hour of play.

I will never understand how a person could possibly vote for that POS.

ugh.

@ nocaplato : Did you ever try h 4 against a human opponent?  From what I understand the appeal of h4 is the variety of different strategies, which can make the same battle played twice end very very differently, something you don't get as much in 3 and 5.

Ha ha, I agree with most of what you say, nocaplato, though there were some redeeming qualities about Heroes 4. The Skill system was really good, for one. And I've reasently come to realize that I sorely miss those Skill Altars - anyone else had the same thought?

Anyway, the reason why I quote you for the AI thing is because you have to read this: Heroes IV AI testing. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Actually, all the 11 points of the article are brilliant (thanx once again for Elvin to point me to that one!), but my favorite will be this one and the Bad Bad Multiplayer Tricks (part V, page 1).

i voted heroes 3 for the good times, but i love how 5 makes the game more strategic.
i've played 1 and 2 but they have this nostalgic feel, cant enjoy it properly. also i dont get what you guys diddnt like with heroes 4, i mean just because it wasen't heroes 3 doesent mean it sucks. i loved how you got to use you'r hero on the battlefield, and it also held a good style tough different.

i love god for letting ubisoft get HOMM even though 3DO disbanded.
they did a great job and as one of the major gaming companies they will probably make a lot of new Great Heroes games.
