After TotE, H5 becomes the best game in series. It is the game of choice for any hot-seat/lan game nowadays. Diversity of factions is why it beats H3.

I voted HOMM4

Am I the only one here who enjoyed HOMM4? There is many things I really liked about it. I loved how heroes could fight in the battle and move by themselves, and I loved how you could have more than one hero in a army. I also really liked how the towns would look different in town view depending on what terrain it was on. The main thing I have against it is that there was only 6 factions, and it did not look as nice as feks. HOMM5. But aside from the graphics and lack of factions I think HOMM4 has been the game I have liked the most. HOMM5 definately looks the best, but I hate how they did not put an editor in the original game, and there is too many patches to fix. HOMM2 I think was best for its time, but it was HOMM3 that had me hooked.

I have to say I've played heroes since the first. Heroes 1 was tons of fun, it was a new concept of strategy. I loved it but I found it much harder than the rest of the series.

Heroes two brought tons of new stuff but one of my favorites : mana system for spells. If any of you remember H1, you had a fixed number of spells, as high as your knowledge, after those were out, you lost the spell from the spellbook and had to go back to a mage guild to "reload". And Heroes 2 introduced my all time favorite faction, the Undead. (Though I didn't realize it at that time ).

Heroes 3 was by far the masterpiece of the series. One of the greatest games ever created, not only in the TBS gender. 7 factions, later 8 with the conflux, with all upgradeable creatures, then the addons, with brilliant stories (Shadow of Death was by far the best campaign I've ever played, next to probably Warcraft 3). The game just keeps on going.

Of course I liked WoG when I saw it, but it quickly became clear that it was overly exaggerated. Some of the new options were great, the creatures were dreamy (when you looked at that titan, weren't you thinking as well:"it would be a killer if he could shoot twice?" "What would happen if the dragons could steal life?") but it just didn't feel real, it was like it really didn't belong to the series.

Heroes 4 came out after, and it was a blast. At first people said it was a total failure. But I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. I tried the game and I thought it was amazing. It was all new. That badass barbarian could actually enter the fight and kill a whole bunch of dragons. The caster was right there on the field. Think about it. The enemy has a crappy army, but an incredibly powerful spellcaster, and you can't do anything about that. Well, now you could. Just kill him. It felt so much more realistic. I was a tad disappointed about having to choose the creatures, but I got over it rather fast. Let's be reasonable. Titans or Dragon Golems? Genies or Naga? The titans+Genie combo just raped everything. Angels or Champions? Ha. Vampires or those lame spitting slugs? Haha. The spell and skill systems were brilliant. Each damn faction finally had their own spells. No longer would the warlocks and the necromancers cast the exact same spells as the wizards or priests.
One thing just bothered me about Heroes 4. Once a necromancer got to grandmaster necromancy, he would become just plainly unstoppable...balance....

Now about our catch of the day, Heroes 5. Great game, got the best out of heroes 3 (everything but the spell system) and heroes 4 (the spell system) but it's mostly about the looks. The gameplay isn't that much of an improvement over h3 or 4, it just stuns people with the awesome graphics. To be honest, I was expecting more from the titan of the series. C'est la vie.

All in all, my vote goes to my all time favorite, Heroes 4. A pity so many of you fail to see it's greatness. It was a great game, and it still is the best for me.

I like heroes 5 the most . It has deeper gameplay and graphics do count for something, Even if not as much as youd like. I think alternate upgprades and the perks system really makes things more interesting.
Heroes 4 was nice . And did have potential. But in the end it was one of the most annoying games ive ever played. Early heroes die too quickly , late they cant be beaten by anything except another hero, Armies become relatively pointless. It doesnt matter if you sacrifice 20 titans as long as your hero is higher level. The battlefield was sort of stupid too. Especially the fact that ranged attack was cut in half when another creature was in front. A lot of spells were imbalanced. only 1 in 5 spells ever got used commonly and some trees totally obliterated the others. On the positive side, The normal game had some nice campaigns, The heroes fighting feature, While badly thought out and balanced, Was a good concept. And most of the creature tiers were balanced. Though the ogre mage or the other creature decision was laughable.
Overall , good concepts . But much worse balance then heroes 5 which does it amazingly well.

To Lathspell and Roy-Algriffin I agree with the points that both of you make, I guess that it comes down to what feature changes we place the most weight on. Maybe the best option would be to combine the great graphics and strategic ballance of HOMM5 with the concepts and campaigns of HOMM4, perhaps then we can get the wow effect that many of us got when we discovered HOMM3.

Depends on the concepts.  Heroes should not be on the battlefeild, it only leads to trouble.  Also, it makes the Hero less important.

I like the idea of heroes on the battle field. It is more realistic, it also increases the strategic options, and makes for a great challenge to protect the hero in the early game. Late in the game the hero will be very important. However it may not be a bad idea to have the heroes have either very powerful protective spells later in the game or some artifacts that protects the hero or make them tougher to kill, and the HOMM4 conceps should have greater ballance I think.
But I love the idea of Heroes being able to enter battle, and the idea that more than one hero can be in an army or that an army can have no hero. I think its great having the increased options that this concept gives, but I am aware that there is many who dont like this. A way to make everyone happy would be to make a option feature that can chose if the heroes can enter battle or not.

A barbarian killing 15 blackies on hos own wasn't that realistic And nobody would make that an option feature for obvious reasons, either the game has them fighting or not. Personally I prefer the middle ground, the current version. Maybe I'm preconceived from H4 but the bad balance I saw there does not tell me that this fiasco will not be repeated. Or that heroes will not have to take combat skill to survive.

I'll admit that I loved the campaign with Lysander and the Gathering Storm where you had to use multiple heroes but otherwise I think we are fine.

because of:

- a lots of creatures with 8 factions it gives a wide raqnge of combining armies and developing strategy
- amaizing wonderful gameplay

but as always it could be better

I guess you already know I preffer H3. This game is simply incredible, not to mention that I played it for ages and I have a lot of nostalgic memories from the beginings of my HoMM career.

H5 is the second for me. Onestly, I tought that Ubi, being assigned to develop it's first HoMM game, will make a verry poor and comercial game. The game is really comercial, but it's verry good. I like to imagine this was more like a wrm-up and their next Heroes will be indeed legendary.

H4 is also verry good. It's different, but this is not such a big problem. At least it answers some questions that would have remained unanswered otherwise, like: "How would it be to have heroes in combat?". Even so, I would still play this game was more like Mario, because it has a brilliant story.

If I would have to give ratings to the games of our beloved series, they would look soemthin like that:

HoMM I:

Gameplay: 9
Storyline: 9
Graphics: 6
Music/Sound: - (it doesn't work on my computer)
Atmospehere: 8
Multiplayer: 10
    Final Impression: 8.4

HoMM II Gold:

Gameplay: 10
Storyline: 9
Graphics: 8
Music/Sounds: 10
Atmosphere: 9
Multiplayer: 10
    Final Impression: 9,3

HoMM III complete Edition:

Gameplay: 10
Storyline: 10
Graphics: 9
Music/Sounds: 9
Atmosphere: 10
Multiplayer: 10
    Final Impression: 9,6

HoMM IV complete Edition:

Gameplay: 10
Storyline: 10
Graphics: 10
Music/Sounds: 10
Atmosphere: 10
Multiplayer: 10
    Final Impression: 10

HoMM V Gold Edition:

Gameplay: 10
Storyline: 9
Graphics: 10
Music/Sounds: 9
Atmosphere: 9
Multiplayer: 10
    Final Impression: 9,5

This would be a critic score. HoMM Iv got a verry big score due to its exceptionally high artistic value (in fact, I think it has the biggest one in the whole gaming world.) HoMM III remains my favourite, tough.

HOMM 3 (all editions) was a great game. I have played it for 8 years. Town portal, dimension door, fly, diplomacy (with scouts) and some of the artifacts (power liches instead of skeletons, and armageddons sword etc.) were over powered. Recieving one of the above were almost a sure win.

HOMM 4: I stoped playing the game and went back to HOMM 3, waiting for HOMM 5. HOMM 4 should never have been made.

HOMM 5: I have played some games and it seems more balanced than HOMM 3. I have not found skills which were over powered as it was seen in HOOM 3.

Have not Played HOMM 1 and 2.

I voted for HOMM 5 as the best game. If it was'nt for the over power in HOMM 3 I would have voted for HOMM 3.
