Yes questions. HoMM5 is a good try - still too dull and empty. HoMM3's map layout is just too perfect and allows strategy. HoMM5 is very good, but too shallow and empty on the map. You do no more than 3-4 interactions with your hero a turn on HoMM5, on a random ugly map on HoMM3 you do 10 or more in the midgame. Just like HoMM4, the last part of the great HoMM was rushed to the market and it took some expansions to fix this. HoMM3 is still the king.

I agree with xlnt.

The combat is very good in Heroes V, but the Adventure Map is boring compared to the HoMM III one. There are much less structures, less dwelling types, less artifacts, less creature banks.

Like there can be less objects if they are 3D. Besides, sometimes it's rather hard to navigate through the environment without missing resources or power ups.

Additionally, I hate the fact that they got rid of the messages displayed when you picked an artifact/interacted with a structure. They really added some flavor. The H5 ones, when they appear (and that is mostly when you are told you have to choose between several bonuses at a power up) are very dull and mechanical.

I agree on some of those points, but I also have to say H3 sometimes had a bit too much of a good thing. Like all those growth artifacts that'd only end up on a town guard hero.

I've been playing this game since heroes 1 but for me 4 is the best. Mostly because it let you build an army of heroes only and combining certain skills changes your class. Also the mechanical creatures were great.

It's not like there are less types of structures, may be in HoMM5 there are more, but the way they fit the map, the proportions, the design - it's messed up. I personally like an idea from HoMM4 (the worst thing that happened to the series) - the combined armies of several tiers i.e. - lots of archers + pack of swordsmen. I hope HoMM6 becomes undisputed number one : )

p.s. I just imagined upg tier 4 orcs + tier 1 orcs : ) scary

Well, for me Heroes 5 is the winner because of the graphics and the varient amount of strategies you can use.

Best one for me thus far has to be HOMM3. Although HOMM2 was pretty good as well. I am just starting to play HOMM5 so my fav might change after awhile, lol

Homm3 is the best!! When I played H5 for the first time I was VEEERY impressed by the graphics and the audio&video, and by the missions, by everything! but soon I realised that H3 will always be the best Homm game... besides I make maps in H3 easier than in H5

Haha...ur right about the maps... i voted WOG cause it was different & enjoyable & even gives the possibility to configure how the game is played. HOMM1 never played...HOMM2 was fantastic until the 3rd...HOMM4 was rubbish to me & HOMM5...i think they could have spent more time improving the game basics instead of the graphics...as an old gamer i prefer playability to graphics...thatīs a feature i dont see much these days. By the way...if 2 guys talk HOMM with a few beers then some genious ideas start to appear...why is that HOMM5 doesnt have any of them? Are they more interested in keeping the basics & staying alive the best game ever than trying to improve it?This is only my opinion...i just wish that the future HOMM6 does bring new aspects instead of 99 different towns & creatures. So...WOG RULES!

I think that if they create a H3 with the H5 graphics I will feel like in heaven... not that H5 is bad, no, actually very nice but I agree that they're never going to make better H game that the III, especially the WoG 3.58f... And of course let's don't forget about H4 - biggest junk in the world and about I and II... I don't think I can give my opinion about them cuz I've already played H3

Edit: About the 99 towns - I think that 6 - 8 are enough but I really want the H3 fortress to return in H6... ah, lizards, lizards...

Rakshasas weren't so bad... In fact, they're not bad at all but most players still haven't "adjust themselves" to them And about the fortress - it was my favorite, so if it's not included to H6, they could at least make a mod...

PS. sry for the off-topic!

I've only played Heroes III-V and I can say I've enjoyed all of them equally, except Wake Of Gods.

If I had to rank them:

1)Heroes III
2)Heroes V
3)Heroes IV
4)WOG

I have to say III, it was simply better in its time than V is in its own.

Also, there was more content and character in that game, V is pretty bare-bones and functionality-oriented by comparison.

Ofc, the annoying lack of caravans in H III is made all the more painfully obvious by their presence in IV and V, and there are other substantial improvements. Heroes V is a very fine game.

III was great, no argument. In fact we wouldn't have V if it wasn't for III. Nevertheless, apart from nostalgia (and in that respect I have fond memories of II), it is only fair to acknowledge that V has a lot more to offer with strategies and character development.

If you take into account balance you have to admit that factions in V are way more balanced compared to III.

I loved III, I'm just glad that with V Town Portal doesn't mean that you don't have to properly defend your castles. I'm also grateful that you don't have to pick one uber ability (earth magic anyone?) to have a shot at winning a game.

V took the best from III and made it different, I can only wish for VI to take the best from V and make it even better (for instance campaigns -Heroes II was great-, AI -good thing a mod fixes some of it-, AI turns length... could all use some major improvements).

For those complaining about the random maps, you can always make up your own templates.

Sorry for the off topic, but how can one make a template for HoMM5? or you're saying it about HoMM3?

Yes. I was referring to the flavour of the events, when you picked up an artifact or such.

The greater gnoll's flail one was priceless: the gnoll killing itself by accident with its own flail is not something I am likely to forget ever

IDK about that. Didn't play a lot of multiplayer, but apart from inferno's obvious weakness (one may argue that in itself is bad enough) they seemed alright.

Well, maybe Necros skeleton numbers, sir Mullich's insane +2 speed or Orissa and the haste guy from stronghold making fun of the map, she with T-birds and tent, him with level 1-3 troops, expert tactics and mass haste (exp-air) were a bit much.

In heroes V, reading this forum, it seems there are factions which can't hold a candle to others in the late game, so it's only balanced for games that can turn out to last either 1 month (in-game) or a year. And necromancers have options, but their necromancy skill is a joke. I buffed it by 60%, but maybe that's a bit much.

Right about town portals (it was and still is hard to adjust, esp since I play H3 now and then too) and earth dominating, but in V there are also skills you absolutely MUST take (or must choose one of two), depending on your alignment but little else, and logistics is still too damn important and even more potent now. Think about swift mind.

Correct (except flavour, again). With game series, even great ones like Heroes of M&M, there are always new great improvements to make

homm5 has risen to expectations
