After a quick look in ToE new (documented) script functions, there are a lot of useful things. Here are a few samples:
SetHeroesExpCoef(fCoef)
specifies the multiplier for the experience gained by the heroes (want to make your own experience boosting week/event?)

MakeHeroNecromancer(heroName, necromancyLevel)
allows the specified hero to raise undead creatures after combat

SetHeroBiography(heroName, newBioTextFileRef)
... allows to change the hero bio during the mission

Cheat Codes and HoF

We've just finished HOMM5 and your cheat codes worked beautifully...thank you for publishing them.

I've now installed HoF, opened and edited to two new documents in notepad, pulled up the console and entered enable_cheats.  All the cheats work (stat changes, artifacts, war machines) except skills.  The skills appear to be accepted on the console, but they do not show up in the character profile slots (only the basic skills chosen by the game) nor are they working in the game (In HOMMV, they played despite not showing up in a slot).  What extra commands need I input to get skill cheats to work, or have I done something wrong?

I have an autistic son who is a great fan of Heroes (obsessed really...we have most of them, and he'll play for hours), but he cannot play without the cheats.  HOMM5 is especially difficult because the campains are so rigidly planned.  I anxiously await any advice or help anyone can give.  Thank you so much.

In HoF, you can only add skills that could be learned by the hero, meaning the prerequisites should be met. I think that's your problem here.
Maybe it's just a matter of adding skills in the correct order, in which case you should be fine. However, if you're trying to add skills that are not supposed to be learned by the hero, then I'm afraid you'll have to come up with an alternate strategy.
One option would be to just give the hero a few more level-ups. You might not get the desired skills, but you'll have a stronger hero, which I assume is basically the main point.
The command for level-up is:
@LevelUpHero('Freyda')

In addition, you should not forget that once all basic skill slots have been occupied, you can no longer add perks through the console commands; so if you want to add perks to skills, you will have to do so with at least one basic skill slot still unoccupied. I think this is a bug in the commands that add them, however. Let's hope they've changed that with the release of TotE.

Thank you, sfidanza.  At least I know now how to get the most of the skills that are available to each hero.  Of course, HoF will be much harder for him than V was since we can no longer use other factions' skills.  What you've given us should be enough to forstall at least a few meltdowns.  I'm grateful for your quick response.

Maurice...I thought you meant the 6th skill slot, which is where the cuttoff was in adding cheats in V.  Now I understand your distinction of basic skills and perks.  Again, a major change to using cheats from V.  Thanks.

They really worked a way to prevent using the cheats, didn't they?  I know it takes away a lot from game play, but sometimes you just need those little beauties.

Hopefully, future Heroes will allow them again.  I don't think we'll be getting ToE.  This new way of going through the campains is just too much for us.  Thank goodness for this forum...without the campain guidance we found here, we would have never made it through even the first mission.

Edited by Maurice at 09:54, 11 Oct 2007.

I have no clue what it is like to have a child with autism, but out of genuine interest: the game can be played in Easy mode, which starts the player off with an advantage in resources and such, and usually sets the computer opponents back. Is Easy mode still (too) difficult?

In any case, one of the things that you could do that really helps out is by adding more creatures to the Heroes that you are playing with. It requires a bit of understanding how the console works and which Heroes have which names and such, but that might also help.

It's not really done through cheat codes, but with a console command. Since you already know how to get the console up, I will skip to the commands themselves (and I hope you already know that console commands are case sensitive). One of the things to note right away is that the names of the Heroes as they appear in the game are usually different than the names used internally by the game. For instance, the Elven Hero that we all know as Findan, is called Heam internally. Through the following command in the console, you can see the names of all Heroes on the map:

@print(GetAllNames(0))

I haven't got the list of ingame Hero names vs. internal Hero names, but I believe there is a document in the Editor folder that details them. Otherwise, I can post a listing here later today (haven't got it with me).

Anyway, if we take the Hero Findan that I mentioned above, then we can add creatures to him through the following command in the console:

@AddHeroCreatures("Heam",<creature_ID>,<quantity> )

In the Editor folder of the game is a document which lists all creature_ID's. Some that I know from the top of my head are for Arch Angels (ID = 14) and Emerald Dragons (ID = 56). So if you would want to add 100 Emerald Dragons to Findan, the command would be

@AddHeroCreatures("Heam",56,100)

In a similar way, you could remove creatures from enemy Heroes, through the @RemoveHeroCreatures(<name>,<creature_ID>,<quantity> ) command. All you would need is the internal name of the enemy Hero. As you can see, to use these two commands, all you need to have is a table that shows the Hero names (ingame vs. internal) and a table that gives the ID for each creature type.

I realise it's a bit of a long post, but I hope it's useful. And if you need more help or have questions, feel free to ask. Enjoy!

Far from me the will to diminish the interest of Maurice's post (which is a nice summary of how to use console commands to ease the game), but these commands and codes and names are detailed in the Cheating Guide, which this thread is initially about:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/heroes5_cheats.shtml

Heroes internal names, for instance, are listed on page 7:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/heroes5_cheats_names.shtml

Despite the name of the guide itself, I second Maurice's interpretation that these are not intrinsically cheats. These commands are primarily used in the maps scripts, to turn the map into a real scenario. They can also be used for debugging. Actually cheating is only another use, and in some cases we could say it's really only "leveling the odds".

If 'Ornella' does not work, try 'OrnellaNecro'.
Other not obvious internal names are:
'Gottai': Gotai
'Hero1': Kragh
'Hero2': Urghat
'Hero3': Garuna
'Hero4': Gorshak
'Hero6': Shak'Karukat
'Hero7': Haggash
'Hero8': Telsek
'Hero9': Kilghan
'RedHeavenHero04': Benedikt
'RedHeavenHero05': Bertrand
'RedHeavenHero06': Gabrielle
